700HP-GTR33
OK, Got my new rims from Leo ,(JDM CONCEPT) XD9 Gunmetal 18" by 10" DEEEEEEP-DISSSSHHH. They look fantastic. The tyres are the hardest choice to make. I drive the car daily and want a good quality tyre without it setting me back $4000 plus. Yes I am as shocked as you are....these apparently go on Ferraris, Porsche etc. All tyres above 255mm wide have a price penalty attached to them. They come with the OH factor. OH you need them that wide.....OH you also need the same size for the fronts. OH OH OH OH OH And these are the tyre dealers...and suppliers. It is as if I have a larger nose than every-body and all they seem to say is OH. Volume is the key to manufacturing costs of these items, sure I understand but the difference from 255 to 295 is almost double, that i cant understand. Ok I am happy with 285/35 for these Rims. The height for the ride and the width for the handling. I fear if I go wider I will have a hard time steering and if I go lower I will have a harder ride than I have now sitting on Ohlins. I can go as high as 315/30 but am concerned not only on the two above points ,but also on my pockets. So my choices are 275/40 ,275/35,275/30,280/35.285/30.285/35,290/30,290/35,295/30,300/30,305/30,310/30,315/30 Which tyre? What size? Now you know what i am going through.HELP! I have bought many tyres in my life, none have been this complicated to choose from. Any input......besides OH Would be great, Thanks Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/132063-new-rims-gtr33/ Share on other sites
Omurru
I'd be going with the 275/40's the problem with going anything below 40's is the handling starts to go because there is so little flex in the sidewall of the tyre. And even the smallest of bumps in the roads is magnified 40billion times, the width of the wheel has little to do with how rough it will be it is more the height of the sidewall. A friend of mine used to do contract work at bridgestone on their industrial networking stuff, apparentley say a 275/40 tyres costs no more to make than a 195/60, it's the fact that the market for them is so small and they sell so few of them they cost the earth..... Beer Baron
even a 255/45 or a 265/45 would be fine. Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/132063-new-rims-gtr33/#findComment-2446016 Share on other sites
700HP-GTR33
even a 255/45 or a 265/45 would be fine. Thanks Beer Baron, I am thinking of going 275/35/18 in the Hangkook K104, or 285/30/18 in Hangkook K107 which is just new on the market so asking anybody about these are really a waste of time. I will buy them next week so hopefully have some more time to research a little more. Might see if anybody does a 275/40/18 this would be ideal I think. ferni
I had 255 hankooks and they actually measured about 20mm less width than my 265mm yokos... i think the k104 a bit undersized.... i think 275 is a good size for your rim, if your going the hankook maybe go for the 285.... ps. i wanna see photos when you have the wheels on your car. 700HP-GTR33
yokohama does 275/40/18 I love Yoko's...I will look into them tommorow. I have had a price on second hand Pirelli 70% tread and Bridgestone 75% tread. Does any-one use seconds because they save 1000's or is it just because they are a better tyre. Why are the K104's at 310 ,Re55 at 470, Bridgestone at 750 and Pirelli at 900 The more I look the worse it gets. Laurence
I would rather get good 255/40's (which will fit easily on 10J) than crappy Korean 275s... There is huge variation in between the width of tyre models of the same specification anyway. I have put lots of different 215/45R17s on my 9J wheels and the difference in actual width is striking. But regardless of how wide they look, the "good" tyres always handle better, when I stick some el cheapo Korean tyres on my car I always think something is broken in the suspension (even when it isn't). The difference in construction of the tyres is very obvious when you are mounting the tyre and amazingly obvious when you are driving it. Anyway, if I had some 10 inch wide wheels I would be putting 235/40s on them because I am one of "them" now. But until I get a new diff from tonight's efforts I won't be changing any tyres very soon But the question you need to ask is how was the car on the current tyre/wheel package you are running? I am guessing either 245/45R17 or 255/40R17... If the car was not a deathtrap running those "narrow" tyres it will be fine with the same width tyre in a lower profile and if the tyres cost twice as much for wider ones just buy softer tyres that grip better and last half as long. I wouldn't mix brands/models of tyres on your GTR, you need exactly the same tyre size all the way around or it will mess with your ATTESA Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/132063-new-rims-gtr33/#findComment-2447653 Share on other sites

Some tyre pricing for you Yoko's (unsure of pattern )275/40/18 $500 each Ventus K104 275/35/18 $310 each Ventus K107 295/30/18 $410 each Not thinking of buying different sizes because of the Attessa. Although might give that the flick later. The widths do vary........why do tyre manufacturers do this...is thw width measured internally and not at the treads? wrxhoon
275x35x18 would be about the same diameter as the stock 245x45x17and your speedo will be same as well. I have used 265x35x18 and 275x35x18 on stock R34 GTR rims and they are both OK. I had Falken ST115's on 18x10 rims in a R33GTR and they were fine. I have Toyo T1Rs 275x35x18, they are a very good all around tyre and if you shop around you should be able to get them at a reasonable price. VSPEC-33
I recently bought 18x10s aswell and went with some Yokohamas. They were a fair bit cheaper than your other quote (depending on which model they quoted you on of course) I got the Yokohama AVS 102 in 265/35/18. They're about $325 per corner fitted when i had mine done. Awesome grip in a straight line and excellent steering response aswell. The only negative is that when they are new they have to be worn in, so dont go flying into a turn when you first have them fitted because they may not hold on! Should be right after the first 100kms or so. Otherwise its an excellent tyre, suited to street and mild track work. My 2c...... Omurru
What tyres and Rim size are you running Kyle? I've got 17x10rims with 255/40's on it but they are an el-cheapo brand nexen or something similar (there what came with the car) and there like skating on ice but the actual ride quality with coil-overs isn't toooooo rough. The two cars i have been in though one with 35's and one with 30's can't remember width were like running on the rim, the car was bumpy as... If you can I would highly recomend RE55's, one of my friends had 235/45/R17's on the front of his n/a supra (something else on the back) and we had a hard time breaking traction.....awesome tyres very much worth the money. I will check again tommorow why my pricing on the yoko's were so high. I can not see the difference in price except for the fact I like the 275/40/18 combination. I will also check to seeif toyo's and Falkans also come in this size. RE55 sound like a good idea, but last i looked 10000KM's before they get dodgy, sucks. Kyle , change your rubbers before you snow-plough into something. High Performance cars need high performance...stopping power(Brakes and tyres) Still not decided, I could write a list of things I need to do for the next 10 weeks and be pretty spot on.But can't for the life of me make a decision...need a holiday Thanks again for your inputs. High Performance cars need high performance...stopping power(Brakes and tyres) Yeh I know thats the only gay thing about them, soft compound so they wear out quick, unlike the tyres on my commodore, I've had them puppies for over 100,000K's now and they still have heaps of tread good old Falken ZE-326's Yeh I know there baaaad, I still take it pretty easy driving the car as i ain't had it long, it is on my immediate list of things to do. Though I am used to driving cars that have so little traction they make my skyline feel like it is on tracks in comparison even with the crappy tyres hmmm reading that it makes me sound like I don't care about my cars, I am really quite anal when it comes to quality with them though, dam working in the aviation industruy and having the mindset of quality required for aircraft it gets expensive Also out of intrest where bouts you been getting quotes from for your prices, just so I have some direction when my time comes Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/132063-new-rims-gtr33/#findComment-2450310 Share on other sites

Ventus 104 same as i am running now 245/45/17 Could not bare to part with another $800 more for the others 275/35/18......$310 Each fitted and balanced.TOTAL $1240 Kyle my first set of tyres..were crap(fronts) I skidded and nearly hit a BMW and the next day I hit a pole. Not much damage,$300 to repair(Repair bumper and repaint ) Just pride When it is wet and you loose rear traction on take off the fronts don't respond very-well when you hit then as soon as you have taken off . Just letting you know....I am sure you know any-way. Also I think tyres have gone up in price lately...due to oil prices. The yoko's i had a quote on were the ADVAN AV02 pattern they have a AV03 but $530Each Thank you all for your input...I will have them on Monday fitted and balanced.Photo to follow. SLY33
Oh damn, i was just going to advise against the K104's!! I have a brand new set of them on my GTR, and i sorry to say but i was a bit shocked by the braking and turn in!!! Understeer city when asked to change the 1500kg whales direction in a hurry! And braking, they kept losing traction causing the ABS to keep coming in so much that the car kept going!! Ok my braking example is when asking a lot of them, but the understeering example i noticed even on just spiritly driving. Another fact to bear is that im used to RE55's on my gtst. But dude at the end of the day if you have anywhere near 700HP, i would forget about all but the very top street tyres such as conti's michelin and pirelli. Any keen for a review of your own, let us know what you think, as we all drive differently and expect different things from our cars!! cheers.
