Hey I just installed an afm head unit in my r33. everything works fine except the rear speakers i can hear sound but its not loud at all not like the front speakers. I am using the factory speakers no subs or anything? Does ne1 have a suggestion to solve this also my antenna goes up as the unit is turned on and never goes back down. how can I get it to go up with the tuner and down when tuner is not being used. With the previous jap afm head unit it worked fine but after i installed my pioneer deh-p4800mp it just stays up as unit is powered on. I dont want it up unneccesarily as it takes away from the car to me any suggestions as to how tto solve this?and the wiring is correct as i went over it three times. The new head unit also has a wire tht connects to the poer antenna wire of the terminal so it should work right?

So what was the HU's wire for the power antenna wire called?

As for the speakers, you've checked the fading on the HU, right?

Let us know what you have and haven't tried so we can narrow down your options! =-]

The wire for the power antenna can be connected to the system control of the power amp or auto antenna relay control terminal thats wht it says and yea i faded the speakers and only a little sound comes out no matter how much i turn the head unit up i didnt try switchin the +ve and -ve leads tho cus i wired the HU to a tee plus the crimp caps I have dont allow to interchange +ve and -ve but guess I will have to try that somehow. I tried the balnce once I faded cut ont the amp(HU's Amo that is) and still the same thing can hear the song but no volume just stays exactly at the same low level sounds like only mids are coming through but no up and down.

Ah! I ask because that's your problem.

That's the "remote" wire for an amp. It sends out a constant voltage to keep an amp turned on. Using that for an antenna will force the antenna on (up) whenever the HU is on.

You need to find your "p.cont" or "ant" wire from the back of the HU.

For the speaker thing, I don't quite understand what you're saying or how you hooked the speakers up. Some Tee thing?

Switching the + and - usually restores bass to speakers that are "out of phase" from one another. i.e one is pushing while one is pulling, therefore cancelling each other out. This could be worth a try definately.

Or, as Chris pointed out once, install a switch for that wire, so you can put the antenna up or down when you need it.

Apparently you CAN still buy HU's that DON'T support an electric antenna properly.

4 years ago I bought a Kenwood headunit from Cash Converters. It was 2 years old at the time, and IT still had the right cabling for the antenna. lol

Lol lol I was sayin that i wired the HU correctly thats all. I will go check it out again just to make sure and the only wire i see on the head unit tht has anything to do with the antenna is the same wire we are talking bout. I cant believe they make head units without a wire to control the antenna being up or down when needed.

Well I just finished checking the wiring and I reversed the wires on the rear speaker polarities to make sure i didn't have +ve going to -ve, it didn't work same thing happened rear speakers are virtually nonexistant. Can hear the music playing out of it but no bass and when I have the cd deck on full blast the speakers have hardly any music coming out of it. Does ne1 think tht the speakers could be blown cus the wiring is not the problem.

They don't distort, right? And they stay the same level no matter what?

If the speakers were blown, i'd imagine that they wouldn't work at all, or if the cone was damaged from age/sun, it'd distort.

Can you quickly plug a front output into one of the rears and retest?

  • 2 weeks later...
you have an amplifer on the rear speakers. what car EXACTLY?

No amp just the heads units amp and its a 95 gts-t. Switched the +ve and -ve wires still the same prob sound stays at one level no matter how high I turn the HU up. Didnt switch the rears with the fron tho may have to try tht.

Your antenna problem is due to you having a Pioneer head Unit, as they only have one remote or trigger wire which is common for an amplifier and an antenna.

As someone mentioned, Kenwood head units have 2 wires, both are blue, one which is a constant power remote for the amplifier which is labelled P.CONT and the other a constant power which the head unit activates ONLY when the source is set to TUNER, (when your listening to the radio) this is labelled as ANT.CONT. The only way to solve your problem is a switch, or to buy a Kewnwood deck or just dont worry about it! But is it really that bad?

Another way to check your speckers, (assuming everything is wired right up to now) is to swap the front and rear connections at the head unit, i.e. connect the front outputs to the back speakers, pain in the ass, yes i know, but this will allow you to rule out whether the head unit itself has a problem. You could also get another pair of speakers to try it, stock skyline ones are not that great anyways so changing tem would be a good sound investment! :D

A way you could also check if your wiring is right, is by puling out one of the rear speakers and trying it directly off the wiring harness of the head unit, (just by holding the wires to the speaker terminals momentarily to see if it works) this will allow you to know if you confused something with the cars wiring harness.

the problem your having with the back speakers is one that i have solved coz i had teh same prob, what u have is both positive of the speakers connected to 1 speaker on head unit and the 2 negatives connected to the other speaker wires from the hu. take 1 from each side and problem solved!!!

    • LOL.... a good amount of people (not all) on that continent seem to know everything and like to measure things in bananas, football fields, statue of liberties instead of the metric system lol.
    • I assume the modules are similar enough, so if you've had no issues I don't see why I would. I have tried to find a wiring diagram for the FPCM / fuel pump circuit, but I can't find it anywhere. Otherwise, I would just do some wire cutting and joining at the FPCM and give the 12 V supplied to the FPCM directly to the pump instead. If you know anyone that could help with wiring diagrams, I'd be very happy
    • If it dies, then bypass. The task isn't difficult. I have one running on a standard R32 FPCM. That's after nearly 20 years of it running an 040, which pull substantially more current than the Walbro. They're not the same module, but I'd hope it indicates that the R33 one should be man enough for the job. I think people kill them when putting proper sized pumps on them, not these little toy pumps we're talking about here.
    • Silicone spray won't hurt anything. And if it does, that's an opportunity to put some solid steel spherical bushings in, so you can really learn what suspension noise sounds like, If you're going to try it, just spray one bush at a time, so you can work out which one is actually noisy. My best guess is that if the noise started only since putting the coilovers in, then it is just noise being transmitted up through the top mounts of the struts, and not necessarily "new" noise from bushes. But it's almost impossible to know.
    • Are you saying the 34 is SUV height, and not that we're talking about an SUV here? (because if we're talking about an SUV, you don't fix them. You just replace them when something breaks. Not worth establishing sufficient emotional connection with an SUV to warrant doing any work on one). I wouldn't jack my car up on a short little loop of 10mm steel rod poking out through a hole in the bumper bar, front or rear end. I realise that we're probably not talking about that type of loop at the front, being the one under/behind the bar on a Skyline.... but even for that one, trying to jack up on what amounts to a thin piece of steel, designed purely for withstanding a horizontal tension force, not a vertical compressive force (and so would be prone to buckling/crushing) and, my most particular bitch about it - located RIGHT AT THE EXTREME FRONT OF THE CAR, applying a load up through the radiator support panel, etc, with almost the entire mass of the car cantilevered between there and the rear wheels? Nope. Not doing that. Not on the regular. That structure out there in front of the front crossmember is not designed to carry load in the vertical direction. Not really designed to carry any load at all, really. The chassis rail that the tow point is connected to would be fine loaded in tension, as per towing. Not intended to carry the mass of the whole car, especially loaded all on one rail, with twisting and all sorts of shitty load distribution going on. No, I will happily drive up on some pieces of wood, thanks. That can only happen on driven wheels, and they are at the other end of the car, and this problem does not exist at that end of the car. And even then, I have been known to drive up on at least 1x piece of 2x8 each side at the rear, simply to reduce the amount of jack pumping necessary to get the car up high enough for the jack stands. What really really shits me about Skylines is the lack of decent places for chassis stands at either end of the car. You'd think they'd be designed into the crossmembers.
