Hey guys, first post here, just want to say first that it looks like a great community you got here!

So my old man wants to get a skyline for us to share, problem is we don't know much about them. I've done some homework on skylines and read through various FAQ's on SAU including the detailed "buying a skyline" thread. However, there's still a few specific questions i've got.

Firstly where to buy... should i be looking at places like carsales.com.au or car yards eg. JSA (what are someother skyline importers in Vic, i hear JSA's pricey?)

The "buying a skyline" thread had a lot of good information but i was still wondering how can you tell if the turbo is about to die... will a RACV inspection or dyno / engine compression test reveal this information? Is an aftermarket turbo timer a good sign or bad sign?

I'm currently looking at an R34 GTT, (what should one pay for a decent R34 GTT?) but my mind can still be easily moulded in a different direction. :/

Lastly i've checked the stats on a R34 GTT, around 205 kW with a weight of only 1400kg, (is this right?) which means it's over the 125kW/tonne legal ratio for P platers. If this is true, what forced induction skylines can P platers legally drive in Victoria, if any?

1. private sale will yield a better car for less $ and generally avoid dodgy dealers

2. an racv test will check general mechanics, much like a normal mechanic can. no one can really tell you if the turbo is about to die. they dont die very often

3. a turbo timer means nothing

4. for a decent r34 gtt i would expect around 30k

5. yes r34 gtt is over power to wieght rule for p platers, so is the r33 gtst. r32 gtst is NOT. driving a car over power to wieght can void any insurance and you will also be fined each time if you are caught, they have power to impound your car if caught several times

I agree with the private sale as opposed to a dealer, alot of dealers sell fresh imports some of which can have various issues, where as if you are buying from a private seller especially an enthusiast there is generally less probability of things going wrong and all the 'little bugs' have been fixed. It also tends to be cheaper.

My advice though decide what you want first car, colour, k's, mod's or stock etc. and then go look for it, don't buy the first car you see or settle for something your not sure on because there's nothing else at the time. Makes for much more happiness in the future.

As to the power to weight thing, how old are you and how much longer you have left on your p's??? I'm not sure about the TAC/VicRoads insurances etc. but car insurance companies such as Just Cars will insure you to drive a high powered vehicle, but because you are still a new driver, you rating will be high so it ain't cheep and excess will also be high.

From my experience's don't drive like an idiot and the police will leave you alone.....mostly......

I wouldn't just limit yourself to look for a car in Vic. I have just purchased my R34 GTT 4dr from QLD and it is getting transported to Vic. I can highly recommend contacting forum member jake32 :/ if you are looking for an R34, if you PM him, he may be able to help you. As well as having high quality vehicles, he was extremely helpful and very trustworthy. :laugh: To purchase the vehicle without seeing the car myself I relied on his word and State Roads to perform a complete a comprehesive inspection, including compression test on the engine (I would highly recommend State Roads, way better than RACV).

:rofl: I have had a very positive experience on purchasing my R34, so hope this info gives you some idea. Good luck with the car hunt and do lots of research.

Is it uncommon for cops to be in the know if you're driving a "high powered vehicle," just by looking at the car even if you're not being a goon on the road? Just curious, what penalty does it incur if you are caught in a "high powered vehicle" on your P's ?

there are those that know and those that dont know exactly which cars are over....if its a 33 or 34 and they know its turbo, then chances are they'll knows its over and get you if they feel like it....

It doesnt seem to be the most enforced law however...

The fine is around $100 and no points as far as i'm aware...

if u're in VIC, do not approach ULTIMATE PERFORMANCE. They f**ked up my bro's Skyline for compliance

-work was not done to standards and the car was sent back

and when things were fixed up,

- the f**ker forgot to give me the full paper work to take to VIC roads for compliance.

But if you're talking about UPI, then i'll have to add that there was no issues with workmanship on my car whatsoever.

While being compliance I also got my timing belt, water pump and all other belts, pulleys etc changed...all fluids changed using premium. No complaints on workmanship.

If i didn't live so far away, i'd probably take my car there for performace stuff as well :/

Yeah look, unfortunately good dealerships are few and far between. But they are out there, just look around. As already mentioned, JSA and UPI also Carizma.


Private sales you have to endure the same crap you do when buying any car.

Just Cars seems to be the place to insure your car.

Get it checked over by a qualified mechanic.

DON'T GET SCREWED! Very easy to!

    • My idle is set at 950rpm though - Moving the timing around 20 degrees is not really what I'd call a calm idle. That said... neither is chop, by definition. The LS ECU likes to adjust timing to hold idle as opposed to air. It'd work, but generally speaking there'd be a discrepancy in the base idle and the IACV would want to move the timing around anyway to maintain said idle. I think I'm just going to keep the timing steady anyway. Preserve my engine mounts.  My aircon is now officially regassed. As the guy was reversing I noticed my reverse lights do not operate, along with my reverse cam. This is a bit distressing, because 100% of guides talk about which wire to connect to backup cams as "the goes with the [other color] wire". Often when doing conversions. Unfortunately the R34 colour wires aren't documented Unfortunately I had a T56 Magnum gearbox with it's reverse switch, which also isn't documented. Unfortunately there's definitely not documentation for people with both of these in the one car. Unfortunately I forgot. After many hours of this, I have a reverse cam and reverse lights again. The wire going through the trans tunnel to the reverse switch had broken. Upon inspection, it looks like this one wire had about 7 spade terminals and extensions in it.. for reasons I cannot possibly comprehend. I also spent the 750 hours required to clean up the wiring behind my head unit which now looks like this: This is a monumental improvement relative to what used to be there WRT triple gauges, head unit, traction control, wideband controller, and whatever the f**k OEM stuff still exists there in various states of connectivity/needed. Next step is to check in at the Exhaust shop to see/confirm how much clearance I have, to decide what mid mufflers or 'resonators' (which are just straight through, narrower mufflers) I can add and hopefully cut out a lot of exhaust leaks, pinhole, v-band or otherwise. But first step will be to 'take a look' before the next step.
    • Fark the AFM card and Nistune, Haltech Nexus S3, DBW, cruise control, flex fuel, dis dat.  
    • It's most likely the bolt/bush where the cover bolts back wore and allowed cover to move forward.
    • Still haven't put the injectors and R35 AFM in so we can tune the bloody thing for the HG highflow it got mid last year! I think I can forecast the upgrade path to a bigger twin scroll, external gate, Haltech, flex setup, Samsonas, dis dat, etc will be .... a while away!
    • Should have taken that opportunity to slot in a twin scroll turbo setup. Maybe next time.
