Dyno Tune - Group Discount - Ric Shaw - Probable date 29/4/03.

Recommended Posts

Hey Guys and Gals,

Just spoke to Ric and he said he would do us a group discount depending on the number of cars that are to be tuned.

I got a price to just have my car tuned and he said $300 (this is just for my car), then depending on the number of cars that are definatly going to be there to be tuned he will work out a discount.

Depending on the number of cars invloved he said that he might be able to do them in one day but it will be a case of having to be there early for your turn and maybe waiting around a little.

Remember that they are not open weekends, and cars with quite low front lips may have difficulty getting on and off the dyno.

Ric can tune r32 GTRs on his dyno and also has access to a 4wd dyno if other GTRs are looking to be tuned (would have to be on a separte day though, still the same price).

Possible date would be Tuesday the 29th of April.

Post up if you definatly want you power fc tuned in this deal.

Dan.

Understatement, Anyone who has seen the entrance to Ric Shaws workshop will understand that its damn near impossible to get a low car into the workshop let alone on the Dyno.

Just a thought

Yeah apparently that 33 was demanded by ric's wife... and she modded it a bit too!

Um... work shop location... thats a really good question... would be a good idea to find out... I'll do that tonight... unless Bonkers finds the thread first!

Added its pretty easy to have a group Dyno day but expecting a workshop to be able to dyno TUNE a number of cars in the one day may my asking alot. It takes hours to perform a proper tune and every car will require a different amount of work.

yeah she told me it was because she needed room for the baby seat.. It was a awesome car tho, black from memory with some serious rubber on the back.

See guys, we winge about the compliance to require a child restraint.. Now you know why.

I also watched ric and his guys at the bathurst 24hour, they had two MR2's in the race. They blew an engine and had to do a swap mid race, was such a contrast between them and the ferrari guys who had every thing you would ever need and ric who had limited equiptment on site.

I will hold off getting the tune until I get my computer, front mount and other secret mods.. But will prolly drop by as I think the workshop is near my work.

Thanks for your input blitz... if you really want to ask ric if he can tune a few cars in a day his number is 97985713. I spoke with lachlan from his workshop this morning and he said that it " might" be possible to tune 4 cars in a day. I would assume this would be starting at 7-7:30 and going to probably around 4:30-5pm. But if your making $1200 in a day I would try to do this.

I understand that you have been around for a while and I also know that it takes MUCH longer to tune a car than it does to do a power run. I was not expecting to get 25 cars saying that they all want in on this deal... I was expecting 4, maybe 5... I did say depending on the number in the first post. Also it is a Dyno tune GROUP DISCOUNT, not group tune in the title of the thread... Perhaps it is a little stupid to be calling people stupid before reading things properly.

Dino, I did think of that, but I have heard horror stories from different shops... and granted... I have also heard them about ric too... but I guess my decision came down to the fact that dad got his car tuned there and they did a good job of it, he also got his car tuned somewhere else and it was not so good. The other reason is that I'm on a budget.

Carlo, I'm not too sure if we will be able to see much of the actuall tuning... Lachlan said we are not allowed into the workshop while they are tuning the car. Maybe we could organise $20 of 5 cent bits and play cards!

Secret mods hey... the track day bug has struck again!

Tony, Were you interested in having your car tuned or just staying (pardon the pun) tuned to the thread? Also, in answer to your last post. Each car has different mods, different boost levels, different amount of wear on the engine. The tune is done on that car to best maximise that cars performance and reliability. The CPU's all being the same brand just means that the shop would only have to think about the functions of one brand... that is about it.

Dan.

Dan you seem to be on a good run with a few of your recent posts. Im not attacking you so I suggest you drop your attitude.

Maybe stupid was the wrong word, say foolish.

Im making a suggestion my friend. If you dont like it thats to bad. Im suggesting this so that you dont get a lineup of people expecting a comprehensive tune and walking away with a quick basic tune. Its just a clarification.

Unlike yourself im not trying to stir, im actually all for the dyno day mate.

See this is the problem with just being able to read what people are saying. It is all too easy to take things the wrong way. Perhaps stupid was the wrong word... and perhaps I should have been clearer and put a few more details in my original post. Your suggestion to drop my attitude is noted but I feel not needed... a simple clarification would have been fine. And as for me stirring... it was not meant to come across that way, I was just trying to clarify and did not like being called stupid. I apologise and will refrain from any further comments on the issue.

Agreed. Welcome to the Internet.

Apologies from me also mate if my posts were interpreted differently from the way they were intended.

Im in, only my Power FC wont be here intil approx 2-3 weeks, so this date might be a bit early for me.

Let me know when you have confirmed a date. If delivery is late then maybe if i pay with you guys but rock up the minute my ECU arrives, say 1-7 days later.

As for a proper tune, i think most of use are running std injectors , turbos , and cams. So bit more boost, exhaust and filters mean they shouldnt be difficult to tune, just a tidy up of the maps. Also unlike OE ECU not speed limiters, boost/ fuel cuts to override.

Im excited about finally being able to top 180km/hr down the straight at Eastern, running more boost, and no pinging.

Tis a good way to get post counts up though!

    • Ha, well, it's been.... a bit of a journey. Things have taken much longer than I'd hoped. I'll probably put up a thread at some stage. Hopefully soon. The car's not done any kms since my update in June though, put it that way.
    • Here's the chart for fuel pressure vs. current draw, assuming your base fuel pressure is 3 bar and you run like 0.5bar boost on WOT, you should only momentarily hit 9amps here and there. (Ignore my prev post, I cannot read a chart these days it seems)
    • Those comp test results are not hideous. Whether they are accurate or not (ie, when that comp tester says 140 psi, is the real pressure120, 140 or 160?) is unknown to us. The state of the battery used to crank it over is unknown, etc etc. Many people around here would say that the absolute values and the spread are perfectly fine to just add boost and keep going. I personally would be happier with a narrower spread than that, but even the diff between 125 and 145 is not terrible. That one cylinder at 125 though, has probably copped some damage relative to the others. You should inspect the valves seeing as you've got it open. Do you know how to measure installed ring gaps? That, and an inspection of the rings themselves, is how you will determine whether they need to be replaced. If you're not good to do these things, take the block and the pistons and rings to a shop that is, and ask them for the go/no-go on them. Do the bores need a hone at all? If so, you might well be justified in getting some different pistons in order to get away from the ring supply problem. Whether you're happy to spend a lot more money right now, on more gear, rather than less money, but an amount that looks stupid given that you will only get a handful of rings in exchange for that money, is for you to decide.
    • also possibly backed up to my filler and shat down it! 🤣
    • Ok so i would love some advice here please, i purchased an R33 a few months back and its had a few mods done to the engine, its an RB25det running a Master ECU, 1200cc injectors, bigger turbo, oil cooler, oil filter relocation kit, Spool H-beam rods, acl/ross pistons. When i removed the motor from the vehicle (as its getting a respray) i thought i would compression test it and these are the following results. Cylinder 1-145psi, Cylinder 2-143psi, Cylinder 3-125psi, Cylinder 4-145psi, Cylinder 5-140psi, Cylinder 6-135psi this test was done with the motor on the ground and powering up the starter motor. I dropped the sump and found broken oil squirters on cylinder 3,5 and 6. I was told my rings are probably worn so i stripped the motor completely to get a new set of rings for it. The trouble is no one has these rings anywhere and they have to be custom made by Ross over in the states and will cost about $600+$200 delivery. My question is how can i tell if my rings are at fault and if they are still ok and is this price ok for a set of rings?
