Hi All,

New owner of a R33 which doesnt seem to have any reverse lights.

I understand there is no fuse and the fact that both lights are out probably means its not bulbs?

I was told that i should ensure that the switch going into the gearbox is correctly connected....havent had a chance to look, though can someone give me a heads up in terms of location of switch? ie drivers side, etc?

thanks!

pretty sure the plugs are on the drivers side of the trans. if you get under the car you should be able to see. they are up at the top of the box. make sure the car is cold or you will find out just how hot the gearbox gets.

still work checking the bulbs though. it might turn out that there isn't any in there.

yep, check the bulbs since they are the easiest to get to.

the reverse and neutral switches are on the top of the gearbox, facing the drivers side. if you get under the back of the gearbox and look up and forwards along the drivers side of it you'll see 2 pairs of wires coming out.

the reversing switch is the furthest forward (hooray! it's a bitch to get to) and they certainly wear out - my reverse lights would only come on when i held the gear lever to the left whilst in reverse. I verified that it was really my gearbox switch at fault with a multimeter before bothering to change it.

you will probably have to lower the gearbox a little in order to change the switch, there's not much room to move otherwise. New switches are $50 from nissan, the plug on the end disassembles easily with a flat screwdriver leaving you 2 bare wires which will fit through a normal 19mm ring spanner. once you have the new switch in then re-assemble the switch (I don't have japanese hands either so it was fun).

thanks for the replies ppl......

yep kinks after playing around i found im having the exact same problem as you described (reverse lights turn on only when holding gear lever left).

Sounds like too much mucking around to get to it for my liking... easier with someone with a hoist!

Do Nissan have to special order the switch or do they stock them?

cheers

call your local and find out. mine stocked them.

I did it in the driveway, could be done just as easily if you had axle stands. If you have to lower the gearbox you need to get under it with a jack anyway.

it is a pain in the bum to get to but if I got to it in the driveway without even loosening the crossmember you can get to it without a hoist :ninja:

Thanks for the replies kinks..

how is the switch held on...screwed on??

is it worth trying to play with it before buying a replacement??

will have a look when i have a chance to jack it up in light...thanks for your help :ninja:

the switch is one unit with a thread on the front and wires coming out the back, it goes into your gearbox like a bolt would.

if you're familiar with a multimeter it should be straightforward to check the existing switch, if not then take a gamble and assume the switch is at fault :pirate:

Hi there, I hope someone can help. The part of the loom that connects to the reverse and neutral switches on my R32 GTS4 has been ripped out (one of those things). I can't see where these are meant to connect to; the best I can see is a bit of the loom that passes by the alternator but I can't be sure that this is it as these wires don't seem to activate my reverse lights. Any help would be great - I have a thread going about this here. Thanks, Ben

    • Has anybody had their wheels refurbished? I reckon it's likely bloody expensive. Even a sand blasting quote for my 17s was 200-300 per wheel! The E39 wheels are basic BMW M Sport (or M Tech at the time.) they have slight rash and some have signs of bad repair in the past on the lips. The main issue is that they've become really off coloured.  I think it will be too much as this is definitely (supposed to be) a budget resto. I've been looking at others for sale but they all have some minor damage and colour issues.  In the end I think I'll just need to sand blast them myself and do a respray.
