Hey guys,

Pardon me if i ask some really silly questions as im still quite new to my GTR and hoping to learn as much as i can.

Anyhow, my car was recently tuned by Eiichiro of Autoselect japan and then the clutch started slipping.

So i got it changed to the HKS GDMAX twin plate if im not mistaken and now the pedal is really light although the bite point is really small and the clutch is really catchy although im coming around to getting used to it.

The thing is, my mech told me that for the BNR34 GTR gearboxes that is made by Getrag, Getrag reccomends using ATF.

So he used Motul ATF for my tranny and according to him, its normal to be quite noisy. In fact, its noisy under low revs when accelerating around 1000 - 2500rpms.

And sometimes at idle, i can hear a rattling noise from the gearbox which was previously not there.

All the while, my car when it is shut off, there is a slight rattle from the gearbox when i kill the engine and it shudders before it goes off and i came to understand that it is prob from the gearbox mounts being worn off.

The rattle now at idle sounds like this particular sound but continous but goes away if you blip the throttle and keep the revs up.

Only abck at idle does the rattle come.

Does anyone have a similar experience or any feedback to share?

Is there any truth behind using ATF in the Getrag boxes cause its much noisier now and sounds rough so its making me worried..

dude i dont know who told you that you need to fill your gearbox up with ATF. and this sounds like a synchronizer prob, if im not mistaking. get your transmission fludhed, and put in redline lightweight shockproof. Since i put in my OS cross mission gearset i have been using it, i find it the best oil for the manual transmission, i even use the stuff in my toyota lancruiser. dude get another mechanic, why would someone put ATF into a manual gearbox, cant understand why

Don't listen to the reply above as he doesn't know what he is talking about.

The Getrag does need to use an ATF. The Nissan Getrag Gearbox Fluid - which is the same as the Toyota Supra Gearbox fluid (as the gearboxes are the same) - is made by Castrol and can also be purchased under the name of Castrol Transmax Z from your local oil store. I'd highly recommend you use it. Also - there are some internal parts of the getrag that will be slowly destroyed if you use the Redline Shockproof (I can't exactly what they are) but that is the reason why you have to used ATF in the getrag gearboxes.

Before you upgraded your clutch to the twin plate the getrag was equipped with a dual mass flywheel. Once you upgrade the R34's to a twin plate and get rid of that flywheel they become noisey as fark. To prove my point - get in the car running at idle - listen to all the noise - the depress the clutch pedal. The noise will go away. So there is nothing basically wrong - it's just one of those things with an R34 GTR and a twin plate clutch.

This was a letter reply to a supra guy that busted a gearbox using Redline by the people at Getrag. It's hard to understand - but the basic's is to use the recommended ATF fluid.

dude im having a super hard time to belive it. Well since there is only one 34 in my country which is currently sitting at a car dealer. i have absolutly no experience with getrags. I just assume that for a manual tranny use MTF and for a auto ATF. i have a 33 so i use the redline.

Yep wittout question use the Redline stuff on the 5 speed boxes in the R32 and R33's as it is tops. But I busted 2 sets of gears in the R34 before I learnt this lesson with the getrags.

Use the Castrol Transmax Z (ATF) - stay away from Redline in the getrags.

Its somewhat noisy but i dont think its the Castrol ATF you mentioned. If im not mistaken, its Motul ATF. Hows that on the 34 boxes?

the noise is from the clutch - not the gearbox (I'm guessing). As far as how good the Motul ATF is - I honestly don't know. All I do know is that the recommended oil from Nissan is just Castrol re-badged. So thats why I use the Castrol and I've never had an issue since using it.

I have a 34 GTR as well mate, although mine is completely stock, i also get a rattle when switching the car off. I also get a rattle at idle as well although in my case it seems to be the thrust bearing as it goes away when you depress the clutch pedal.

Good info about the ATF. Will keep that in mind. :laugh:

I know the car is running Motul ATF.

When i depress the clutch, i hear the metallic ringing sound from the clutch that i really dont hear the gearbox.

But about that rattle sound that comes when i kill the car and at idle..

When i blip the throttle abit, initially, meaning the first second or so, the rattle increases intensity with the engine speed as im blipping the throttle on the car.

Could this mean a thrust bearing problem as well?

the rattle comes from using an aftermarket flywheel.

i use a getrag in my car.

and i was paranoid about thinking i bought a crap gearbox

only to find out that the standard flywheel has some kind of damper in the build?? someone might be able to explain that better

which kills the rattle

but when you go to an aftermarket clutch and flywheel (which is solid) you will get a rattle. it sounds scary but i got used to it

Also reading what is said above about oils to use.

i beleive i have used redline gear oil. i forget the actual one tho it might have been light weight or super light weight.

what is ment to be used in the 34 gearbox?

R34 GTRs use a dual mass flywheel ( some subarus use it as well). It can get noisy( slightly rattly) even in stock form . Twin plate clutches are rattly, some more than others.

The getrag box used in the R34 GTR uses a thinner oil than the 5 speeder of earlier models. If you are going to use redline in it you should use the extra lightweight shockproof as recomended by redline .

I would only be using the stuff Snowy mentioned.

Its what the actual MAKERS of the gearbox state...

Not what some oil company does to get sales of thier own product.

Remember, if you break it, its gonna hurt

i wouldnt mind showing someone in sydney the noises i hear, who actually know what they are looking for..

it might just be the flywheel making the vibrations and knocking noises. as stated above when aftermarket clutch/flywheel is involved.

but i wouldnt mind just bieng sure.

    • perhaps i should have mentioned, I plugged the unit in before i handed over to the electronics repair shop to see what damaged had been caused and the unit worked (ac controls, rear demister etc) bar the lights behind the lcd. i would assume that the diode was only to control lighting and didnt harm anything else i got the unit back from the electronics repair shop and all is well (to a point). The lights are back on and ac controls are working. im still paranoid as i beleive the repairer just put in any zener diode he could find and admitted asking chatgpt if its compatible   i do however have another issue... sometimes when i turn the ignition on, the climate control unit now goes through a diagnostics procedure which normally occurs when you disconnect and reconnect but this may be due to the below   to top everything off, and feel free to shoot me as im just about to do it myself anyway, while i was checking the newly repaired board by plugging in the climate control unit bare without the housing, i believe i may have shorted it on the headunit surround. Climate control unit still works but now the keyless entry doesnt work along with the dome light not turning on when you open the door. to add to this tricky situation, when you start the car and remove the key ( i have a turbo timer so car remains on) the keyless entry works. the dome light also works when you switch to the on position. fuses were checked and all ok ive deduced that the short somehow has messed with the smart entry control module as that is what controls the keyless entry and dome light on door opening   you guys wouldnt happen to have any experience with that topic lmao... im only laughing as its all i can do right now my self diagnosed adhd always gets me in a situation as i have no patience and want to get everything done in shortest amount of time as possible often ignoring crucial steps such as disconnecting battery when stuffing around with electronics or even placing a simple rag over the metallic headunit surround when placing a live pcb board on top of it   FML
    • Bit of a pity we don't have good images of the back/front of the PCB ~ that said, I found a YT vid of a teardown to replace dicky clock switches, and got enough of a glimpse to realize this PCB is the front-end to a connected to what I'll call PCBA, and as such this is all digital on this PCB..ergo, battery voltage probably doesn't make an appearance here ; that is, I'd expect them to do something on PCBA wrt power conditioning for the adjustment/display/switch PCB.... ....given what's transpired..ie; some permutation of 12vdc on a 5vdc with or without correct polarity...would explain why the zener said "no" and exploded. The transistor Q5 (M33) is likely to be a digital switching transistor...that is, package has builtin bias resistors to ensure it saturates as soon as base threshold voltage is reached (minimal rise/fall time)....and wrt the question 'what else could've fried?' ....well, I know there's an MCU on this board (display, I/O at a guess), and you hope they isolated it from this scenario...I got my crayons out, it looks a bit like this...   ...not a lot to see, or rather, everything you'd like to see disappears down a via to the other side...base drive for the transistor comes from somewhere else, what this transistor is switching is somewhere else...but the zener circuit is exclusive to all this ~ it's providing a set voltage (current limited by the 1K3 resistor R19)...and disappears somewhere else down the via I marked V out ; if the errant voltage 'jumped' the diode in the millisecond before it exploded, whatever that V out via feeds may have seen a spike... ....I'll just imagine that Q5 was switched off at the time, thus no damage should've been done....but whatever that zener feeds has to be checked... HTH

    • Hah, fair enough! But if you learn with this one you can drive any other OEM manual. No modern luxury features like auto rev-matching or hillstart assist to give you a false sense of confidence. And a heavy car with not that much torque so it stalls easily.
