I found a unichip unit piggybacked to my factory ecu (R33). I had no idea it was there, and i assume the previous owner didnt know.

I was looking at putting an safc in when i found it, so it's a bonus having the ability to alter timing, and possibly boost, as well as afr's.

Where do i get this tuned in Sydney?

What does a tune (probably fine tune) cost for these?

Anyone using one? Any advise or tips?

i will contact them. do you recommend these guys from experience?

also, i was told these units arent too bad, and definately a step up from safc.

I think def a step up from SAFC but some people don't like them. Hard to get a good tune done. I think it may be because they can't be tuned in real time.

Lot's of people recommend them but when I rang them looking for a tuner they said something funny that put me off. It was only one thing but it made me not trust them.

TM Autosports on the Central Coast do them to and they seem alright.

central coast is too far. i just got back from penrith (hitman) in this stinking heat, that was far enough. lol. unfortunately he doesnt do unichip.

Give Peter a call at 'Advan performance' at silverwater - 96471326 he just tuned my car on the weekend and I am very happy with it, he is very helpfull and easy to speak with these guys tune alot of skylines. You can even ask him what is the next mod you should do and he knows how to tune your car without pushing it too hard.He knows alot about skylines good luck.

The reason why some people dont like Unichip is because tuning them is not acessible by everyone.

i.e the workshop has to be a certified Unichip dealer meaning they will have the software/hardware to do it. Otherwise it cant be touched, a la Fcon.

Mine can, but being a newer car it could be a recent addition to the unit. It was one of APS' biggest selling points when they ran a tech day at AutoTech.

Do NOT !!! go to C&V for unichip tuning.I speak from experience.Go directly to Croydon.Frankly, if I had any brains I should have stayed with that level of tuning and not gone down the long path of horsepower hunting.My car was so good on fuel and crisp to drive but you know how it goes,"I want more".

Had my car booked at C&V at 9.00am,they started working on it at 2.00pm.Twenty minutes to install and 15min of tuning and sends me on my way.Crap,crap,crap.The same car with the speed cut removed.

Burn me once and I never return.So booked it with Jim and two and a half hours later I was very happy.215rwkw. All the safety of a standard computer but a tune the factory should have done.

I`m currently changing everything again so I havn`t learned anything.PFC is far superior but it took me a while to find a great tuner,not Jim though.Sorry Jim.But if low 200`s are all your after then yes, the unichip is great.

so what did the tune cost you with Jim?

around $450 from memory but that was two years ago.My unichip was the old version with no ability for boost control.You will need a good fuel pump so if you havn`t got one then contact Paul McGrath, performance-wise, he has Tomei bolt in fuel pumps at reasonable prices.Don`t go for the walbro or even the Bosch pumps as you have to remove the anti flow-back device to fit it.This will make it difficult to start.Make sure you have a fuel regulator as well. :O

ok, either i'm a tightass and unaware of the cost of tuning an existing unichip, or that's alot.

my unichip is also an older type, been in the car at least two years. boost control is not confirmed yet.

there's also another small box connected, non descript, has no name, label, or markings, but has a harness that looks like its running to the ecu.

anyway, looks like i better start shopping around.

might consider an fmic before the tune. this recent heat has had an impact on the usually smooth and responsive feel of the car.

(edit: car has stalled on starting 3 times in the last 3 days (previously always started perfectly) and the idle was playing up a bit while driving. is this related to the current hot weather?)

besides 3 inch turbo back exhaust and pod, the car is stock (running 9psi which isnt a stretch since it was running that on stock boost).

why do u say i'll need a fuel pump?

Just wanted to update this thread.

If anyone else was looking at getting a Unichip tuned in Sydney, try C&V Performance at Caringbah. http://www.cvperformance.com.au/

They did a great job on mine, at a fraction of the costs mentioned above.

These guys definately know their shit. They can tune anything for you. ANYTHING. I'm impressed with their work.

Went in with 170.2rwkw@10psi, left with 182.2rwkw@10psi (3" exhaust + pod + r34smic. everything else is standard).

There wasnt even that much room to move, coz the unichip had already been tuned obviously by the previous owner, or whoever.

So he played with the afr's a bit, and also scrapped the existing timing, and started from scratch.

We did about 12 odd runs, till he was happy.

He discovered i had a boost controller module on the unichip, so we replaced my mbc with the standard solenoid, and he set that up too. But we were still running 10psi, from first to last run, so the gains arent from extra boost.

I actually forgot that you had recommended against them. Only just read that bit again now.

I ran into them by accident when getting my mate's 6litre SS chipped. I spoke to the tuner, Con, and apparently he has a shit load of experience with unichips.

They were one of the largest unichip agents, back in the day.

Anyway, i'm happy with it.

    • Did this end up working? Did you take some pictures?
    • And finally, the front lower mount. It was doubly weird. Firstly, the lower mount is held in with a bracket that has 3 bolts (it also acts as the steering lock stop), and then a nut on the shock lower mount itself. So, remove the 3x 14mm head bolts , then the 17mm nut that holds the shock in. From there, you can't actually remove the shock from the lower mount bolt (took me a while to work that out....) Sadly I don't have a pic of the other side, but the swaybar mounts to the same bolt that holds the shock in. You need to push that swaybar mount/bolt back so the shock can be pulled out past the lower control arm.  In this pic you can see the bolt partly pushed back, but it had to go further than that to release the shock. Once the shock is out, putting the new one in is "reverse of disassembly". Put the top of the shock through at least one hole and put a nut on loosely to hold it in place. Put the lower end in place and push the swaybar mount / shock bolt back in place, then loosely attach the other 2 top nuts. Bolt the bracket back in place with the 14mm head bolts and finally put the nut onto the lower bolt. Done....you have new suspension on your v37!
    • And now to the front.  No pics of the 3 nuts holding the front struts on, they are easy to spot. Undo 2 and leave the closest one on loosely. Underneath we have to deal with the wiring again, but this time its worse because the plug is behind the guard liner. You'll have to decide how much of the guard liner to remove, I undid the lower liner's top, inside and lower clips, but didn't pull it full off the guard. Same issue undoing the plug as at the rear, you need to firmly push the release clip from below while equally firmly gripping the plug body and pulling it out of  the socket. I used my fancy electrical disconnect pliers to get in there There is also one clip for the wiring, unlike at the rear I could not get behind it so just had to lever it up and out.....not in great condition to re-use in future.
    • Onto the rear lower shock mount. It's worth starting with a decent degrease to remove 10+ years of road grime, and perhaps also spray a penetrating oil on the shock lower nut. Don't forget to include the shock wiring and plug in the clean.... Deal with the wiring first; you need to release 2 clips where the wiring goes into the bracket (use long nose pliers behind the bracket to compress the clip so you can reuse it), and the rubber mount slides out, then release the plug.  I found it very hard to unplug, from underneath you can compress the tab with a screwdriver or similar, and gently but firmly pull the plug out of the socket (regular pliers may help but don't put too much pressure on the plastic. The lower mount is straightforward, 17mm nut and you can pull the shock out. As I wasn't putting a standard shock back in, I gave the car side wiring socket a generous gob of dialectric grease to keep crap out in the future. Putting the new shock in is straightforward, feed it into at least 1 of the bolt holes at the top and reach around to put a nut on it to hold it up. Then put on the other 2 top nuts loosely and put the shock onto the lower mounting bolt (you may need to lift the hub a little if the new shock is shorter). Tighten the lower nut and 3 upper nuts and you are done. In my case the BC Racing shocks came assembled for the fronts, but the rears needed to re-use the factory strut tops. For that you need spring compressors to take the pressure off the top nut (they are compressed enough when the spring can move between the top and bottom spring seats. Then a 17mm ring spanner to undo the nut while using an 8mm open spanner to stop the shaft turning (or, if you are really lucky you might get it off with a rattle gun).
    • You will now be able to lift the parcel shelf trim enough to get to the shock cover bolts; if you need to full remove the parcel shelf trim for some reason you also remove the escutcheons around the rear seat release and you will have to unplug the high stop light wiring from the boot. Next up is removal of the bracket; 6 nuts and a bolt Good news, you've finally got to the strut top! Remove the dust cover and the 3 shock mount nuts (perhaps leave 1 on lightly for now....) Same on the other side, but easier now you've done it all before
