Hey all,

I need to move the charcoal canister in a BNR32. I’m trying to think it over in my head, and i cant imagine it would harm its operation if i dropped it 4" down. Any one? Either it hasn’t come up here, or i cant use search to save myself

Actually, if someone can describe, or picture'ise how the three lines connected to the black cylinder work in purging gas tank vapor into the shared "collector" thing on vacuum, that'd be swell  I can only guess (1) ones from the tank, (2) another from the valve to the collector, (3) the last maybe triggers the valve to vent the (2) to the engine under vacuum / over run.

Any help would be appreciated!

am also interested in this, as i want to move my canister soon as its the best place for my catch can to go...

where aer you thinking of mounting it, Michael?

Hey Waza,

I’m thinking bout mounting it underneath the corner of the engine bay, to sit in front of the passenger side wheel plastic. Close to the location of the bovs but other side. I figure there’s something glaringly obvious stopping people, as every R32 iv seen either leaves it in the stock location, or ditches it altogether to make room for the PS reservoir re-position.

So far I’m thinking that there’s a in, out and a trigger, and that if its just vapor, then I should be ok.

this also includes a breather from the fuel tank if im not mistaken.

so going lower than the tank will cause a possible siphon effect when the tanks full ?

would only be on an over filled tank i guess sine the breather is mounted to the cap ontop of the tank.

Craved, yah the breather from the tank is the "in" i refer to. What if i run the tubing high first, like up the firewall, thats a fair deal higher then the filler kneck, where i believe the tank breather comes from.

i know the 33's run a metal line, so if you cut it and run a loop you should be fine, however the filler cap breather should only be for when you fill it up, so seals when the cap is back on

Revived for sure!

Level with the strut tower is bout wot?... 2" higher then norm?

Mines been in the lower passenger side brake duct; no worries.

In reality this thread was started by myself with some caution (I have NON now)

The only thing I worried bout was the tank feed. People suggested running a loop (like a toilet drain) but I gave in, and didn't.... all seems well.

Unless your car tips upside down, your ok.. and really.. if that did happen, you aint guna be worrying bout the charcoal cannister.. you'll be checking your dates tits...

... my attempt at humor on a Sat night..

Its fumes, not liquid thats the transfer medium.

haha.

all i'm worried about is the fuel vapour.. being near the very hot turbos and dump pipe..

do you think it would cause a safety issue?

edit:

i've looped the fuel line with a T piece and blocked the inlet on the carbon canister, so it should be safer now.

Guys, do you have any photos of the cannister set-up? I've just found out my cannister has been moved before i bought the car, and i'm worried that it's not working properly. The line going under the car (which ends near the cat) has vacuum, and i'm not sure it should?

This thread was started for BNR32's, so i cannot be sure of your setup.

The CC has vapor line from the tank, the purge line and a trigger from the plenum somewhere.

- The f.tank line runs along the fuel lines from the back to front, up over the firewall near the brake lines, past the AC HP lines, and to the thickest lines on the C.cannister.

- The trigger line is the thinest, and on a BNR32 connected the the first (of 6) throttle bodies.

- The purge line hooks up somewhere to the plenum, i forget.

Thread just doesn't die :)

Surely a loop would only add 200mm of hose, and would add, what do the boffins call it? - linear head wall friction something or other? I cant imagine the friction of air and fumes on the inside of a rubber hose would amount to much, def not cause fuel tank combustion / pressurization :)

Regardless, mines been setup as described ok b4 it got taken off the road...

Time well tell, SAU will def know if my car blows up

... dammit, now im stress'in out

    • So stock ECU does not like anything above 10 psi?  That Nistune one is just for "try" if it will be any different, I know it need to be tune for that. I know but YOU may know about these problem but i/we dont. They few little Skylines here let alone people who know anything about tham so that is why iam asking here
    • So now we have a radiator with no attachments whatsoever. It lifts up with a particularly tight spot between the drivers side air box mount and the lower radiator outlet, but if you've got this far you will sort that too. This is the lower mounts with the rad out so you can see where the rubber bushes go, it is a straight shot upwards Done! Assembly is the reverse of disassembly, with blood less likely to be shed.
    • Right, onto the second last trick. The Air Con condenser is mounted to the front of the radiator and stays in the car when the radiator is removed. There are 2x 10mm headed self tappers holding the top of the condenser to the radiator, remove those The bottom of the condenser is attached to the radiator with clips. You need to lift the condenser out of those clips and clear (up, then forward). f**ked if  could work out how to do that last bit with the front bumper on. I hope you can, and you share the trick.  Bumper removal probably deserves its own thread one day once I've recovered the will to live, but basically you need to remove the wheels, front inner guard liners (clips and 10mm headed bolts), the self tapper between the guard and the bumper at the rearmost point of the bumper (same as an R32 that bit), any remaining clips at the top/front of the grill, an absolute bastard design with a plate that holds the top of the bumper above the headlight each side (only 1 bolt which is tricky to get to, but the plate catches 2 places on the bumper and must be removed....carefully!) and push clips between the bumper and guard under the headlight. If you've done all that you will be faced with wiring for the fog lights on both sides and in ADM Q50 RS at least, 4 nasty tight plugs on the driver's side for the ADAS stuff. So, the clips at the bottom look like this on drivers side (looking from the front) And on the passenger side (also from the front), you can see this one is already out Clearance on both of these are super tight; the condenser needs to move up but the upper rad support mount prevents that, and the radiator can't move down far because it is (rubber) mounted. Once you achieve the impossible and drop the condenser off those mounts so it does not stop the rad moving, you are good to go
    • OK, next the shroud needs to come off and there are a couple of tricks. Firstly, there is a loom from near the passenger side headlight to the fans, coolant temp sensor etc and there is no plug to undo.  In my case I was OK to leave the shroud on top of the engine so I just undid the passenger side fan plug and about 10 of the clips which gave enough free wire to put it aside. The fan plugs were super tight, the trick I used was a small falt screwdriver to push down on the release tab, then a larger flat screwdriver to lever the plug out of the fan unit....be careful with how much force you apply! If you need to remove the shroud altogether for some reason you will have to deal with all the plugs (tight) and clips (brittle)....good luck. I removed all of the clips and replaced them with cable ties that I will just cut next time. Also, in the Red Sport / 400R at least, the intake heat exchanger reservoir hose is bolted to the shroud in 2 places with 10mm headed bolts; so remove them (the hose stays in the car; no need to undo it at the t fittings down at the radiator lower mount. Once you've dealt with the HX hose and the wiring loom, there are 3x 10mm headed self tappers holding the top of the shroud to the radiator; remove those.   The shroud then lifts out of the bottom mounts where it sits on the radiator, up and onto the engine out of the way. Simples
