Hey there guys,

Just recently I upped my boost to 10psi and fited my fmic and the car doesn't feel as smooth as it does at stock/ebc off (7psi) and at 13psi its very stuttery/jerky and theres quite abit of mis-fire. I recently threw in some BKR6E plugs in and they are 0.8mm gap so I'm leaning to believe its a coilpack problem as I had to replace my 6th one before (it was dying out and making the car only run on 5 cylinders).

So I'm planning to pull them out tomorrow to alraldite or silicon or whatever them to see if I can fix the problem before deciding to fork out for some splitfires. But the problem is I've no idea where to actually alradite them so I've taken some pictures of the coil, could someone highlight where exactly I'm suppose to apply the stuff or post a picture of their own showing where?

And I've also read people have cleaned the connection/contact point inside but when I've removed the rubber gromet/boot all I found was a spring and a small black (carbon rod?) stick that was unreachable as it was pretty high up there. Is this what I'm suppose to clean? The spring? The rod? Both?

Not the spring and not the rod. You want to insulate the boot around it, and keep the spark inside the boot cavity.

I've done heaps of CA coils, just silicone the boot (you should be able to remove this), and give the rod a bit of a clean up with some fine wire brushing.

Thanks Howie, so I just want to apply the stuff on the rubber boot that I'm holding in the 3rd picture?

So the actual module (heavy squarry metal black thing) gets left alone? Or do I apply a thin layer over that as well?

You could ongsta... it wouldn't hurt. Sometimes coils crack at the actual module also due to them being dried out, so it's not a bad idea to silicone that also.

Before you start, get some electrical contact cleaner and spray inside where the spring and rod is. Clean up any carbon deposits on the rod end with a wire brush or very very fine sandpaper, and silicone the boot.

Just out of curiousity do you have much carbon build up on your rod ends?

I'd go probably all bar the connector snorkel. It won't make a difference to the running of the coil.

You'd only find that coils will misfire at lower boost if they're faulty. By upping the boost you're asking coils to supply you with more spark than they're capable of, but the coil itself is probably fine, it's just being asked to work outside of it's parameters.

If your coil pack was really really rooted, you can see the sparks when you open the ornament cover on idle!

use silicon 101, thats what i think its called. I use it on my coilpacks. I applied it to the entire coilpack except the bit in which the rubber boot covers. works a treat although im still having some minor drama's, dont know if its coilpack related.

Would it be missing at low boost at light throttle or heavy acceleration only Howie?

If they're faulty, they'd misfire anywhere between idle and part-open throttle. If you were in Adelaide i'd lend you my splitfires to test them with.

My coilpacks are playing up atm. It ONLY misfires on WOT @ 16psi.

I can drive around like normal off boost, or part throttle / boost (0.5bar) and the car is fine.

Its when i push the coil packs is when the spark jumps out.

Considering the short term fix, but seeing as the splifires are around $520 these days im just gunna save and drop em in.

I was told by an auto elec. that there would be breakages in the windings inside the coils, and botching them isnt the best, as once sparks have jumped they follow the track left constantly causing misfires and leakage down the future...

I think it’s odd that no-one has picked up that this is an R34 gtt.

10 psi on an R34 gtt with no aftermarket management has it in R&R mode.

How could you expect anything but worse at 13psi?

There is no harm in doing your coil packs, but don’t expect them to fix this issue you have.

You need management.

Never too young for coil pack issues. Sometimes coil packs dry out for a number of reasons, environmental, engine overheating etc.

I've seen coils go at 60,000kms, that's not uncommon depending on what series coils you've got.

    • There's restrictor pills in the stock boost control hoses. That's how they set the amount that was bled off and hence the "high" boost setting. The usual mod in the day was to remove it and send the "high" boost setting up to about 14 psi.
    • Thanks Duncan, that's the best info I've read. Furthermore after learning about the PCM programming side controlling the factory boost solenoid, the purpose of the solenoid is to "bleed" boost when pin 25 is earthed, thus allowing spring pressure in the wastegate actuator to overcome diaphragm boost pressure, thus closing or reducing the position of the wastegate flap creating more boost as the turbo is able to spin faster. It's pretty cool to see a designated Pill to do exactly this, would have liked to have seen it with a tiny filter over the end for those moments in vacuum.  The constant bleed pill has now been removed completely from the system and solenoid boost control has been restored once again.   Case closed 😂
    • The wideband reading is meaningless if it's not running. Why are you using shitty old sidefeeds on any engine, let alone a Neo? What manifold and fuel rail are you using to achieve that? Beyond that, can't help you with AEM stuff as I've never been their ECU/CAS combo.
    • Manual boost controllers (where a little of the boost was bled off) were quite common back in the day, because they were cheap and easy. Generally they had a manual adjustment screw rather than being fixed like yours. Down side is they always bleed boost, not just when you want them to so an electronic boost controller that uses a solenoid will have less lag.
    • Hello , im new here and i have A31 home build  RB25det neo stock eng / turbo  aem ems 2 blue connector  aem 3.5 map aem cas disk aem wideband connected to ecu  355 lph pump 550 nismo yellow injectors side feed aftermarket regulator  and won’t start with base aem tuner basic tune eventually flipped cas 180 degree so it triggers on correct stroke not in exhaust cycle  Now it won’t start Wideband reads 10 and 11 at lowest fuel setting  and will share calibrations soon for aem tuner i think something is wrong in aem tuner    please if you have any information, am very grateful
