Has anyone made a custom exhaust for their car? I have planned what i want to make for mine, and i want to know if i can exclude the cat convertor, the South African R31's dont have cats, and they have more power due to this, so... i dont care for legality really, the permits will come later, i want to do the work while i can over Easter. Any help would be much appreciated.

My oh my... must be something with newer cars then, i dunno what the hell a cat does, cep for make it lose power, and filter more crap thru, but its worth keepin it on there then. I made a very nice setup for my old 202 a while back with two - piece extractors joining to one with a single muffler before the diff curve, and a big hotdog at the back. Fully ricey, but the 202 was worked, so i didnt really care. :) 17" rims too...NOO!!! I Miss em :'(

Yea, it doesnt say you have to have a cat, just that u have to comply with emission laws, and that the exhaust shouldnt exceed the volume of the std one by a noticeable amount... I dont know how some cars get over the pits... Ive done nearly all my work to my car this holidays :D Gotta get the permits now before i can drive it anywhere though :D

Nate - a cat converts the exhaust fumes from being very poisonous to be being less harmful fumes. It reduces the carbon monoxide and hydrocarbons from being "emitted" from your exhaust. I think it is mainly for the environment. wow I remembered something from chemistry hahaha

whats wrong with your curren kakimoto catback? i'd only replace it with a custom, if it was less than 3" or rusted out. if you're lookin for a full custom system, its gonna be $1000 at least. if you want to get the rest of the exhaust done (cat - turbo) just get that custom made, should be well under $400. custom exhaust just means its custom made, to how u want it, not an off-the-shelf item.

bad idea.

If it aint broke don't fix it. Get the dump/front pipe done in stainless (should cost you no more than $450 for both fitted).

If you are evil, then have the old cat removed and stick a matchng 3 inch stainless pipe through the middle of it, so it looks like a fully functional cat from the outside.

BTW, the cat stops working once you use fuel additives (like toluene) and run non-factory fuel mistures. They die remarkably quickly on performance vehicles.

Oh well, i dunno about the cat, but im fitting a custom exhaust, cat back...and so far... ive spent... $45 on 2.5" and 3" piping. :O But this is cost price, as im doing all the labour myself. Also, im getting the bends done at my dads work, they use an oxy torch or somethin the rather, with sand or something in the pipe.. to bend it and keep the same diameter right the way thru! Dunno how mandrel bends work, but this is basically the same thing, (maybe is :) iunno)

Also, another good thing, is that marlows is asking for $40 for the adapter that goes between the air pod and the air flow meter. The bad thing with the marlows one, is the intake is SQUARE!!! This reduces the flow of the intake, because the square is smaller than the circular channel. Im gettin this done for nothin too :) just a plate with 3" exhaust pipe stuck on it. EZ! Next problem... heat shield...

But then you run into droning issues when driving which will get pretty irritating. I have a kakimoto myself and they flow really well...thats all u need, if u want more noise just ditch the turbo-cat assembly, get a new dump and screamer pipe made up and ur set dude.

    • CTIS (Central Tire Inflation System) has existed since the 80's. I'm looking into buying a Hummer H1 and they generally included it. 
    • My idle is set at 950rpm though - Moving the timing around 20 degrees is not really what I'd call a calm idle. That said... neither is chop, by definition. The LS ECU likes to adjust timing to hold idle as opposed to air. It'd work, but generally speaking there'd be a discrepancy in the base idle and the IACV would want to move the timing around anyway to maintain said idle. I think I'm just going to keep the timing steady anyway. Preserve my engine mounts.  My aircon is now officially regassed. As the guy was reversing I noticed my reverse lights do not operate, along with my reverse cam. This is a bit distressing, because 100% of guides talk about which wire to connect to backup cams as "the goes with the [other color] wire". Often when doing conversions. Unfortunately the R34 colour wires aren't documented Unfortunately I had a T56 Magnum gearbox with it's reverse switch, which also isn't documented. Unfortunately there's definitely not documentation for people with both of these in the one car. Unfortunately I forgot. After many hours of this, I have a reverse cam and reverse lights again. The wire going through the trans tunnel to the reverse switch had broken. Upon inspection, it looks like this one wire had about 7 spade terminals and extensions in it.. for reasons I cannot possibly comprehend. I also spent the 750 hours required to clean up the wiring behind my head unit which now looks like this: This is a monumental improvement relative to what used to be there WRT triple gauges, head unit, traction control, wideband controller, and whatever the f**k OEM stuff still exists there in various states of connectivity/needed. Next step is to check in at the Exhaust shop to see/confirm how much clearance I have, to decide what mid mufflers or 'resonators' (which are just straight through, narrower mufflers) I can add and hopefully cut out a lot of exhaust leaks, pinhole, v-band or otherwise. But first step will be to 'take a look' before the next step.
    • Fark the AFM card and Nistune, Haltech Nexus S3, DBW, cruise control, flex fuel, dis dat.  
    • It's most likely the bolt/bush where the cover bolts back wore and allowed cover to move forward.
    • Still haven't put the injectors and R35 AFM in so we can tune the bloody thing for the HG highflow it got mid last year! I think I can forecast the upgrade path to a bigger twin scroll, external gate, Haltech, flex setup, Samsonas, dis dat, etc will be .... a while away!
