Bye Bye Turbos. All signs point to turbos.

Just unbolt the cat and see what surprises are to behold.

Compression test before putting the new turbos on.. or even before you buy them as chances are you might need the rebuild.

I never let anybody else drive the car since I bought it. It's not a car you say "sure take it for a spin", it's a car that should be taken care of and learnt how to drive it safely over time (hopping in for the first time and boosting = dangerous).

Good luck, hopefully you won't need the rebuild :(

My car still has the stock turbos - I've heard that if you behave yourself until the oil is at temp then your exh wheels should be fine. Most problems with shattered turbines when guys plant it on a cold engine (hence cold ceramic -> most brittle state)(think cold coffee cups! :P)

edit: that sucks hanyou, great to see a mate's true colours when he offered to pay for the repair! :whistling:

  • 1 month later...

ok guys i finally did a compression test today with the help of blk180.

these were the results

1- 135

2- 130

3- 115

4- 135

5- 130

6- 135

cylinder 3 was obviously down but yeah couldnt try it again for the 2nd time as my battery died lol. but im hoping its ok! any thoughts?

did you do it with WOT? and was the engine warm? Dont worry about the lowness of the average compression...as you said, your battery died.

however, did you try squirting a little oil into cylinder 3 to see if that improved compession? and if it did itd suggest your rings most likely need replacing on that cylinder

Oil will always increase compression, its how much increase, that you maybe able to tell if its bottom end ( could be worn /broken ring or scorred bore) or cylinder head ( valves ) . Much easier to do a leakdown test then you can see the % of pressure you loose and you can hear where you are loosing it as well.

You will find the engine was cold so the figures will be a little higher with a warm engine and if the throttle was closed with WOT it will be higher again.

His problem is number 3 is much lower, so as long as they were all checked the same way and the same cranking speed he has a problem with number 3..

bad news

woah to all the guys saying they would never let a friend drive their car. I'd hate to be your friend! It's just a car after all. All the bloke did was take his car for a ride. it's not like he rode his wife. I can understand not sharing ones life partner, but as nice as a car is, it's just a car.

I have a few friend with nice cars and I love driving them all. And any friend that I know is responsible or even just into cars is welcome to drive my GTR, lexus or GTST. If everyone was as tough as you guys I would never have had a go of my friend GT3 cup car, or driven my friends group N touring car at 3 different race meets (and that's spanking the nuts off it on track and worth lots more than most GTRs) or any other number of fun times in other peoples cars. I've enjoyed them all and my good friends who know how to drive I would happily let them spank my car. I know not many of them would spank it as hard as I do, so no biggie.

Car was cold, not WOT just cranked it told him he sould get a leak down test to be sure. as i said its only a qick check and the shop can tell you for sure.

I knew the numbers would be low but was just checking for eveness not best compression?

Still the original question was why doesnt he have boost. Low compression or not..where is the positive pressure? Is it possible to damage just one cylinder with ceramic fragments? Did he have a low reading on number 3 before all this? I'd be checking the cat converter for left overs before you worry about the compression test results...

    • Haha, i kow right? Could have bought so many cars for the same amount of money (or less) but driving Unicorn gives you at least +1mln to style 😅. Like wise man said "life's to short to drink cheap wine and drive boring cars" 😉
    • Newbie here, proud owner of an Autech 260RS. I'm on the hunt for wiring diagrams specific to the 260RS, particularly S1. I've ran my eyes through R33, R34 Diagrams, there are some similarities, however continue to find incorrect wire colours and pins on connectors in the 33,34 diagrams.   I was hoping someone could point me in the right direction? I'd be happy to pay for the originals in Japanese. I can translate them, at least they would be accurate.   Any help please would be greatly appreciated, never heard an RB26DETT before let alone driven one, and I've got a spaghetti monster of goodness to sort out.   Cheers Benny
    • Hey all  im wondering if you can help me please I have put a rb20 box in my r34 gtt as my auto packed up and a friend had a spare box I know it’s not ideal but it will get me up and running for now. we have done the conversation and everything is working great but my Speedo we got a s13 speed sensor but my Speedo reads double now and I bought a speed converter but still not having any luck.  so I thought I’ll reach out and pick your brains  any help would be appreciated please as I wanna drive my car again
    • Drain it. I got official Matic D but you can get whatever is listed as Matic D compatible.
    • Thanks guys,  Yeah I should at least have them dynoed, at least then I know what I've got as a starting point.  The springs on these are hard as rocks. I vaguely remember Russman saying he was going to sell the shocks to me with the rocks fitted, as he was keeping the softer springs for his new setup.  I didn't click at the time but of course that was to let me know the shock/spring wouldn't be matched.  I also remember pricing up new springs around 2014-15, but, house, money etc. it never happened. So that was another reason to have them rebuilt. I have rebuilt the forks on many motorcycles so I think I could handle the seals on these easily enough, but getting the valving right would be a rabbit hole I cbf exploring.  Duncan, interesting to hear RP was tuning these back then. I might give them a call.  In the mean time I have been busy fitting sway bars. The Whiteline rear sway bar I purchased 15 years ago finally got fitted, along with the Whiteline front bar that showed up last week. Just waiting on new links for the front sway bar to finish that off.  And my spare set of advan AVS VS5's should be back from the powder coaters in a Pearl White finish sometime this week, with a set of Hankook RS4's lined up for fitting.  And then I just have all the suspension bushes to do. A comprehensive kit is on the way... Lots to do before the Ararat hill climb. Cheers guys 🍻
