Hey guys,

Yesterday as i was putting my windows up my drivers side decided to suddenly stop. Now I've pulled apart the door and tried to find the culprit, now i dont think its the mech as when i click it on and off with the car acc on i hear this little black thing that the mech goes to from the back and as I move the mech to on and off etc it makes clicking noises from it but doesnt engange in the window moving at all

post-27680-1162970545.jpg

so if this is the culprit what does it actually do etc? and how much would i be looking at to fix it and also I cant take my car out at the moment due to it not being secure so is there anyway of manually getting the window up?

Thanks guys appreciate any help possible,

Tim

I had a similar problem in my 33 ages ago, except that mine would wind up but not down so it was a pain more than anything else.

Anyway, mine ended up being a dry solder joint in the black box that contains the relays. An auto electrical mate (Chris Rogers, who posts on here actually  ) diagnosed and fixed the problem, for a total cost of $0.

In your case though, if the box is clicking the relays are actually working, so the problem sounds like it's somewhere between the box and the window motor/mechanism. Get a multimeter onto the motor if you can reach it, and see if the voltage is getting that far. If it doesn't, there's a break in the wires. If it does, you either have a fried window motor or a stuck mechanism. It should be easy enough to work out which based on whether the motor seems to be "trying" to work or not.

FYI the box controls the auto up/down function.

I had a problem with my window only about a month ago, I had the same problem and when I tried to put the window up and down i'd hear a clicking sound in the black box you have posted.

However, after testing it and speaking to people on SAU we were sure it was the actuall motor, went to a import wrecker and picked up one and fixed my problem :P

Don't suppose anyone knows how you would go about removing the power window motor? From what i can gather, it's down near the speaker? Its a bit hard to tell with all the bits & pieces in the door. I can see the relay moving, so i'm guessing it's the motor that's stuffed. Thanks peeps.

You're gonna have to pull the door lining off. There's a tutorial on the forum that explains how to remove the door trim. It's easy, just be gentle :teehee:

cheers mate, i've already taken the trim off and checked out the relay. Hooked it up without it in the little black box and can see it clicking away. So that seems kosher. Just need to know how the heck do i get the motor out? lol So many screws and do dads to yank at. Was'nt this complicated on my old 31 haha Dont wory, gentle is my middle name, actually its my last

    • Bit of a pity we don't have good images of the back/front of the PCB ~ that said, I found a YT vid of a teardown to replace dicky clock switches, and got enough of a glimpse to realize this PCB is the front-end to a connected to what I'll call PCBA, and as such this is all digital on this PCB..ergo, battery voltage probably doesn't make an appearance here ; that is, I'd expect them to do something on PCBA wrt power conditioning for the adjustment/display/switch PCB.... ....given what's transpired..ie; some permutation of 12vdc on a 5vdc with or without correct polarity...would explain why the zener said "no" and exploded. The transistor Q5 (M33) is likely to be a digital switching transistor...that is, package has builtin bias resistors to ensure it saturates as soon as base threshold voltage is reached (minimal rise/fall time)....and wrt the question 'what else could've fried?' ....well, I know there's an MCU on this board (display, I/O at a guess), and you hope they isolated it from this scenario...I got my crayons out, it looks a bit like this...   ...not a lot to see, or rather, everything you'd like to see disappears down a via to the other side...base drive for the transistor comes from somewhere else, what this transistor is switching is somewhere else...but the zener circuit is exclusive to all this ~ it's providing a set voltage (current limited by the 1K3 resistor R19)...and disappears somewhere else down the via I marked V out ; if the errant voltage 'jumped' the diode in the millisecond before it exploded, whatever that V out via feeds may have seen a spike... ....I'll just imagine that Q5 was switched off at the time, thus no damage should've been done....but whatever that zener feeds has to be checked... • I think Fitmit had some, have a look on there (theyre Australian as well)
    • Hah, fair enough! But if you learn with this one you can drive any other OEM manual. No modern luxury features like auto rev-matching or hillstart assist to give you a false sense of confidence. And a heavy car with not that much torque so it stalls easily.
    • Actually, I'd say all three are the automatic option. Just the different trim levels. The manual would be RSFS, no?
