Hey People,

This is my first Nissan that has hicas, And I have noticed alot of threads from people wanting to remove it.

I'm just wondering what are the pro's and con's of having this removed? Is it mainly for drift and/or track? Or are they prone to play up so the easiest option is to actually remove it?

Any help would be great!

ive found that it depends on the way i enter the corner and steer through it to how much it actually interfers.

from my experience if you have to turn more during the corner due to the apex tightening its interfers more, aswell as wen you turn sharp quickly at speed.

So it will only really be a problem with hard street driving or track?

I haven't really feeled it interfer when driving "spirited" on the streets.

Is there a computer upgrade for it that get rectify the problems at higher levels of driving?

I have seen an altessa system somewhere before? is this it?

In case you don't, its active rear steering. Unfortunately the system is reactive and hydraulically / electrically operated, and so as people have said it doesn't react quickly and at the limit it makes changes you didn't request.

Around town and at 7/10 it probably does improve handling, but if you're really pushing it you may find it counterproductive.

I do know what HICAS is and know how it works, I was a technician for Mitsubishi and aome of there cars have a similar system, but have never heard any cmplaints about if from customers.

Hence when I asked wy people with the Nissan system want it "locked"

If your car is in good nick, i.e. the bushes that enable the rear wheels to steer aren't stuffed allowing more movement than what is intended - then I think it does a reasonable job.

I doubt there are many people who can outdrive the hicas computer, hardly any body is capable of driving a GTR 10/10s anyway.

Before you blame the Hicas jack up the rear and grab a hold of the rear wheels, if you get any movement (as in the direction the car would steer the wheels) at all then something needs fixing.

Although I don't think there should be any probs with your R34 unless it has done higher kms.

my bushes are all fine, there is no excess movement and the only effects that i feel from hicas are negative, and this is with street driving in my r33-gts-t with the electronically actuated hicas.

if there are good effects when it it doing what it does during normal driving then it is doing it well because i dont notice and the car feels good, but i doubt it makes up for the ill effects when driving hard.

even friends driving behind the car have seen how hicas unsettles it, espeically when turning into a corner.

plenty of people drive their gtrs 10/10ths and what do you think constitutes 'outdriving the hicas computer' anyway???

my answer to the first poster would be if you like cruising around and so far have not noticed anything out of the ordinary dont bother getting rid of it.

There are more inputs to the hicas computer than just speed. It definitely works under 70kms aswell, you can feel it. But it doesn't work when you're not pulling much cornering force. i.e. it will not work when you're parking. So it should not help down small streets.

Also the toe angle changes are limited to around 1deg, not enough to help you manouvre tight things

Apparently, on turn in they turn in the same direction as the front wheels, but after the weight has moved, they turn in the opposite direction, hence the feeling of the rear being unsettled and sliding a little

Upside down, Miss Jane. The turn opposite phase on turn in then same phase mid corner.

Which is why HICAS retains the ability to scare the living bejeesus out of you when you are hustling along & need to turn in on an off camber entry...

    • forgot to mention that when it does this it does not kill the engine, but I have not kept the pedal down long enough to let it, as I see no reason to beat up on it as its got to be something simple, small and dumb causing this.  And as soon as I let off pedal, the engine returns to its normal super smooth operation and rpms re-stabilize quickly, once below 4k. 
    • neither stumble or cut really seem to be an appropriate term....hard to explain its like a rev limiter but at 4k, but it violently shakes engine and entire vehicle as the rpms will not rise over 4k, even with slow acceleration. as soon as it hits 4k, it sounds like entire spark is lost entirely. plugs were 1.1 which I used as such, but later put in new plugs gapped down to .8 changed back after issue arose when I replaced the coils, still does it with either plug gap...damn and it was all running so good.
    • Oh how times have changed! I actually lean it out relative to my water/methanol injector duty cycle. The methanol adds a lot of fueling and you can then lean it out even more due to reduced knock. 
    • Yeah my thoughts are the same, a well thought out WMI setup, would be slightly ahead of just straight E85 and you're also chemically intercooling the charged air, dropping it even further. This is why you need to add so much more fuel as soon as you spray. I remember someone taking me through their set up before (Dennis, has a R33, lives around Cabramatta - no idea if he's still around on this forum). He would target AFR 10:1 on 98, then as WMI ramped on, AFR would lean back up to 11:1. Amazingly, he did this all through his PowerFC, a relay to cut power to his EBC solenoid if there was not enough line pressure on his WMI kit. And of course, if there wasn't any boost made above gate pressure, you wouldn't be accessing the load cells with heaps of timing for WMI. One downside to that rudimentary setup, once the WMI came on, the EBC would unleash the dragon, and of course all the timing. Tyres would fry lol.
