I have a Nesa dash mounted DVD player in my S1 Stagea that transmits audio to an old JVC HU on an FM freq via a modulator with a lot of engine noise. The noise (whine) rises and falls with revs so I am pretty sure it is alternator interference, but the confusing bit is that the noise is only when the dvd player is on (playing or not) and not when the HU is playing radio.

I have tried a 5 amp supressor (no amps or such at this stage) on the FM modulator but it hasn't made any difference so I am at a bit of a loss as where to go next, any suggestions would be appreciated.

No, thats the really annoying part about it - the whine is only eveident when I am using the dvd player.

The HU is an older model that has a (unused) tape deck - I use the dvd player for my cd's

Only problem with that, is the dvd player doesn't have any speaker level out - it is transmitting to the head unit via a fm modulator (that I connected the noise supressor to) and the HU amps it up and puts it out to the speakers. Also, the dvd player doesn't have a tuner so I am still using the HU for the radio - its only the tape deck thats unused.

Does anyone out there have any good reason why I shouldn't just go and buy 2 more noise supressors and put one on the power to the dvd player and one on the power to the head unit? I know it may be overkill, but thats how p1ssed off I am getting. I have never seen a setup produce this much noise without any amps or anything..

Where'd you plug the power from?

Test it's not the power supply by running a wire (with appropriate fuse) straight to the power. It might be needing more current for dvd mode than you're giving it.

Also make sure your ground is the same gauge as the power you're giving the unit. ...

Suppressors are a band aid fix from how I see it.

    • I thought it could be an issue because the standard plate was flexing when stressed. Maybe the original gear set will hold a bit better without flex? Last time on the dyno it made around 670nm at the hubs. Now it have bigger turbo and better intake but have not been on a dyno yet. The car is being used from family trips to drag race events. So the shifts can be a little violent. It is grinding if I shift to fast so was thinking I should overhaul it soon.
    • From the factory on RB26s there's a fitting on the intake manifold collector/"plenum" that provides pre-throttle boost signal. That's how they did it back in the day, I figure it's fine to replicate it.
    • I would be surprised if that wasn't the issue. It's probably telling you, that even if you remove the plastic liner, you may have some other clearance issues that may occur too in some scenarios. IE, tyre to guard. It looks like someone has already rolled the lip, but you may still have issues in the future IE, turning and hitting a bump etc. The fact it changes how bad it makes the noise when you are going backward vs forward is highly indicative that it's the tyre rubbing. They do make a terrible sound, even if you're only pushing a project car that has a liner hanging down on a tyre!   Has the car been lowered? If it has been, what is the measurement from the centre of the wheel hub to the lip of the guard straight up?
