A very good single plate can be better than a twin plate -- its about the quality of the plates not the quantity.

That said, a twin plate almost always has more clamping pressure (ie it garbs harder) than a single plate.

totally agree karen. personally i dont like the way the twins grab, they are harsh and i can just imagine what they are doing to the gearbox

Actually you know what? You can do whatever you like big boy. I like that kind of toughness in a man :(

Jim Berry will say anything that goes against twin plates. They work, regardless of whether he likes it or not.

and to think i got into shit for expressing my opinion.

one reason major clutch making companies (i.e os, orc, hks, exceedy, nismo) use more plates is to obtain a higher HP capable clutch, whereas say a well built single (jim berry) only needs one plate as the design of the springs & tabs etc are of such high quality it only needs the single plate. so inother words, the 'major' companies clutch designs are rather shit compared to one from jim. he also doesnt just do singles, he also makes twins (imported from europe) and he modify's the regular twins so they actually work properly. also one very fine example of how capable his clutch is, TWOOGLE (the 32 gtr drag car owned by dirtgarage off here) use to run on one of jims, 2 full years of racing with 440awkw and not one problem.

who would u rather trust and believe, a guy who'se been in the industry for 27 yrs and does solely clutches, or a major company that churns out 1000's of clutches off an assembly line for the domestic market.

I'd definately get that clutch rebuilt if you can, its got such a nice feel and control. Although Yahoo auctions said it was a Nismo twin plate, be prepared for the a small chance it may be a different brand or type, i've had the same thing happen to me before.

Wow, snap, never mind what I said about mercurry being expensive, they have come back and out-quoted everyone. Asked 850 for the rebuild and 550 to take it out and put it back in.

Nice price from Mercury! I don't see how you can beat that deal.

PS. if anyone gets a tough single from Jim Berry can you please let me have a small drive even if it means just in a car park. I would like to know first hand how they feel. I have only driven lines with stock or double/triple Jap clutches in them so I have no basis for a complete comparison.

If the re builder knows what he is doing he will do all the things you mentioned and still have two plates...my NPC rebuilt clutch has to be driven to be belived! It is 100% better than when it was os spec and as for grabbyness? well there is none it is as easy to drive as any full face single plate clutch I have experienced. Also from memory Bennos clutch is docile as well

when TWOOGLE upped the ante what did they go for?

Ian good option on the rebuild if done well you will love it, I will have to let you have a quick drive of mine if I see you before yours is done

Sure andy, thatd be great.

I just gota look at my fundage situation before I commit to this, the cars still quite driveable atm so I might be able to push it back till after mid-feb.

Just go real easy on it because once they slip they really drop the bundle quickly...mine went from mild slip to not being able to get on boost at all within the space of about 3 weeks

Umm Jim rebuilds twins as well....and I know alot of cars running his clutches...that run decent times and actually outpower "Japanese name brand twins" with a single...

Call Dan I could not recommend him more, or that clutch place NPC...they do good work on rebuilds also.

Mercury outsource SOME of the work they do, so find out where it is going before forking over cash...

If it helps...

i just had my clutch done with the help on Dan. I won't be taking my car anywhere else when it comes to mechanical. I got a great price for my clutch AND service, but now im poor LOL.

I personally didnt like the drive of a twin plate, due to the strong grab it has. I went with a 5 puck button clutch, which now i have 600km on, and it is beautiful. I was more happy with this than the Single organic plate I had in it before.

Im the person who jumps on the highway, go through a little traffic, essensially I am nearly an everyday driver, so I needed that comfortability in my clutch.

I suppose, Ian, you do a lot of driving to your lady's (Not ladies LOL) house via the highway, so twin wont be so harsh on your valuable valuable leg =D.

Good luck with your selection, Im sure Dan will be more helpful than anyone else with it.

if ur willing to drive down to ipswich, i can get u a drive in the 33 gtst i recently put one of Jims full mony's in

when TWOOGLE upped the ante what did they go for?

im not sure of the brand, but they changed as their sponser required them to run their clucth, otherwise paul & stacey would still be using jim's clutch :P

Send me a PM dude with when your free etc. Only thing is with the RB20 the jimberry clutch would probably feel a lot harsher than on the RB26.

But for me Id go a JimBerry or Nicks clutch clutch, then get whichever mechanic you trust to install it. But thats if it were my money, which it isnt.

It's a good thing I use NPC to rebuild my clutches. I don't believe in marking up someone elses work so Ian will be getting my cost on NPC rebuilt twin plate, and then just the labour to install. And if he decides to change to a single I'll smash anyones price on that too....dare me? lol just kidding...but seriously, do it!

Mercury reckons a GTR will shread a singleplate.

Tell them they are full of sh1t...i raced for 2.5 years on a Jim Berry single plate with between 400-450 AWKW in our race car....never even looked like slipping. Quite honestly it was the best performance part ive ever purchased in my 15yrs of car modifying.

and if you don't want to tell them they are full of sh1t...tell them to ring me...i will!

EDIT:due to sponsor commitments ive changed my clutch type and brand..will let you know how it goes.

Just gave the old clutch one last blast around the mountainside, it was slipping a fair bit on WOT but not so much on 50% throttle. Its definatly getting worse tho, maybe I should stop booting it so much? Haha... Its going in to get fixed tomorrow tho, im going to miss driving her while shes away!

    • As discussed in the previous post, the bushes in the 110 needed replacing. I took this opportunity to replace the castor bushes, the front lower control arm, lower the car and get the alignment dialled in with new tyres. I took it down to Alignment Motorsports on the GC to get this work done and also get more out of the Shockworks as I felt like I wasn't getting the full use out of them.  To cut a very long story short, it ended up being the case the passenger side castor arm wouldn't accept the brand new bush as the sleeve had worn badly enough to the point you could push the new bush in by hand and completely through. Trying a pair of TRD bushes didn't fix the issue either (I had originally gone with Hardrace bushes). We needed to urgently source another castor arm, and thankfully this was sourced and the guys at the shop worked on my car until 7pm on a Saturday to get everything done. The car rides a lot nicer now with the suspension dialled in properly. Lowered the car a little as well to suit the lower profile front tyres, and just bring the car down generally. Eternally thankful for the guys down at the shop to get the car sorted, we both pulled big favours from our contacts to get it done on the Saturday.  Also plugged in the new Stedi foglights into the S15, and even from a quick test in the garage I'm keen to see how they look out on the road. I had some concerns about the length of the LED body and whether it'd fit in the foglight housing but it's fine.  I've got a small window coming up next month where I'll likely get a little paint work done on the 110 to remove the rear wing, add a boot wing and roof wing, get the side skirt fixed up and colour match the little panel on the tail lights so that I can install some badges that I've kept in storage. I'm also tempted to put in a new pair of headlights on the 110.  Until then, here's some more pictures from Easter this year.
    • I would put a fuel pressure gauge between the filter and the fuel rail, see if it's maintaining good fuel pressure at idle going up to the point when it stalls. Do you see any strange behavior in commanded fuel leading up to the point when it stalls? You might have to start going through the service manual and doing a long list of sensor tests if it's not the fuel system for whatever reason.
    • Hi,  Just joined the forum so I could share my "fix" of this problem. Might be of use to someone. Had the same hunting at idle issue on my V36 with VQ35HR engine after swapping the engine because the original one got overheated.  While changing the engine I made the mistake of cleaning the throttle bodies and tried all the tricks i could find to do a throttle relearn with no luck. Gave in and took it to a shop and they couldn't sort it. Then took it to my local Nissan dealership and they couldn't get it to idle properly. They said I'd need to replace the throttle bodies and the ecu probably costing more than the car is worth. So I had the idea of replacing the carbon I cleaned out with a thin layer of super glue and it's back to normal idle now. Bit rough but saved the car from the wreckers 🤣
    • After my last update, I went ahead with cleaning and restoring the entire fuel system. This included removing the tank and cleaning it with the Beyond Balistics solution, power washing it multiple times, drying it thoroughly, rinsing with IPA, drying again with heat gun and compressed air. Also, cleaning out the lines, fuel rail, and replacing the fuel pump with an OEM-style one. During the cleaning process, I replaced several hoses - including the breather hose on the fuel tank, which turned out to be the cause of the earlier fuel leak. This is what the old fuel filter looked like: Fuel tank before cleaning: Dirty Fuel Tank.mp4   Fuel tank after cleaning (some staining remains): Clean Fuel Tank.mp4 Both the OEM 270cc and new DeatschWerks 550cc injectors were cleaned professionally by a shop. Before reassembling everything, I tested the fuel flow by running the pump output into a container at the fuel filter location - flow looked good. I then fitted the new fuel filter and reassembled the rest of the system. Fuel Flow Test.mp4 Test 1 - 550cc injectors Ran the new fuel pump with its supplied diagonal strainer (different from OEM’s flat strainer) and my 550cc injectors using the same resized-injector map I had successfully used before. At first, it idled roughly and stalled when I applied throttle. Checked the spark plugs and found that they were fouled with carbon (likely from the earlier overly rich running when the injectors were clogged). After cleaning the plugs, the car started fine. However, it would only idle for 30–60 seconds before stalling, and while driving it would feel like a “fuel cut” after a few seconds - though it wouldn’t fully stall. Test 2 – Strainer swap Suspecting the diagonal strainer might not be reaching the tank bottom, I swapped it for the original flat strainer and filled the tank with ~45L of fuel. The issue persisted exactly the same. Test 3 – OEM injectors To eliminate tuning variables, I reinstalled the OEM 270cc injectors and reverted to the original map. Cleaned the spark plugs again just in-case. The stalling and “fuel cut” still remained.   At this stage, I suspect an intermittent power or connection fault at the fuel pump hanger, caused during the cleaning process. This has led me to look into getting Frenchy’s fuel hanger and replacing the unit entirely. TL;DR: Cleaned and restored the fuel system (tank, lines, rail, pump). Tested 550cc injectors with the same resized-injector map as before, but the car stalls at idle and experiences what feels like “fuel cut” after a few seconds of driving. Swapped back to OEM injectors with original map to rule out tuning, but the issue persists. Now suspecting an intermittent power or connection fault at the fuel pump hanger, possibly cause by the cleaning process.
