Not sure if its already been asked or not (and theres 85 pages to search through), Im just looking for a quick answer as to wether theres any difference between the R31 RB30 and the VL RB30. I can pickup a complete R31 with an RB30E for quite a reasonable price and am looking at building it up over 12 months or so, then using my RB26 head on my current engine on it.

:D

The block and all internals are the same between the skyline and vl RB30E

The skyline does however have a few different parts, such as different size heater connections, different harmonic balancer etc etc.

But its all little stuff that wont effect a conversion such as discussed in this thread.

Hey Guys,

Can i get a VRS kit for the RB25DE (R32 non-vct version) ?

That way i will have the correct head gasket for the conversion. (Gasket without VCT oil hole)

Or have you guys got the VRS kit for the RB25 VCT version, then spent another $70 on the RB30 headgasket and thrown the RB25 gasket away?

Thanks for your help.

The R32 Non-VCT RB25DE headgasket is the same as the RB30E/T headgasket.

I bought the VRS kit for my R32 RB25DE head ($275) as I had the head rebuilt.

I then sold the stock headgasket and had supplied by the engine builder a multilayer metal heagasket that contained a O-ring type sealing ring in the middle layer.

Thats what i was getting at the GTS25 non VCT R32 would have the correct headgasket out of the packet.

You wouldn't happen to know the Nissan Part No for that kit is do you?

If not what year was the R32 GTS25, just so i get the right thing?

Thanks Again :)

I had a quick look through my pics and must have not grabed a pic of the VRS kit. :)

I was sure I had.. :)

When ordering I simply asked for a R32 RB25DE VRS kit.

It came with the usual top end gaskets (inlet/plenum/exhaust/rocker covers), valve stem seals, cam seals etc.

As a side note im selling gtr block adaptors now with all the low down on how to make it work, as there is a fair bit of work involved. So if anyone is interested PM. I have spent around $1500 in material and machining costs to perfect this thing and let me tell you it isnt worth the 2g RIPS and AVO want to make it work!!!

I actually do have a few questions I want to confirm.

The Goal is this..

250rwkw - under 300rwkw.

For Daily street use. Possible track outings.. (possible meaning once or twice a year and that's a maybe!!!)

mainly just a torquey street car.

engine will end up in a 4 door R32 sedan

1.)R32 RB25DE valve springs.

If I am not rebuilding the head and simply want to have the seat pressure tested, how is this done?

What rating are the standard R32 RB25DE springs and what are the RB26DETT springs rating?

(EG, the 25de has 10 lb springs and the 26dett has 15lb springs... )

what are the true ratings?

How much are stock 26dett valve springs?

2.)For my Goal, will the stock 30E pistons be fine with the 8.3:1 comp ratio and a turbo which will need 1Bar to produce the power?

3.)Head Gasket - Stock RB30E gasket and O-ring the block good enough for my goal?

4.)exhaust manifold - I'm unsure of what part needs to be removed/grinded from the water gallery in the RB30E block

to make the gasket and manifold fit.. does anyone have pics of the bottom end before and after the removal?

5.)Sump - removal of the fins inside the RB20DET sump. how much do you have to remove off them? or is it complete removal?

Won't this cause oil surge/starvation problems?

6.)Pistons - Stock RB30E pistons will be used. What was the process called that can be done to pistons

to make them not absorb as much heat.. I read it but can't find it again..

I believe there was also a cost per piston.. anyone remember or find it?

7.)Quench - Do I need to worry about this is I am using stock pistons?

8.)CR - Should I bother removing some height off the block to increase the compression ratio?

if so, how much off the bottom end and how much off the head?

Remember this is a budget/for the street build.

9.)RODS - Prepped rods.. what is Prepping? what was the cost per rod?

10.)CRANK - linishing... again, what is it and what is the cost?

11.)Oil pump - RB25DET oil pump is what I plan to use.. Is second hand ok?

Can you tell if they are faulty by visually inspecting them?

12.)ECU - Obviously R32 GTST ecu to run in. But to support my goal, Can the Stock ECU be chipped to handle?

I mean to reach that power goal, surely a Z32 or bigger AFM is required along with injectors and FPR.

Can you run these with a CHIPPED stock ECU?

Sydney kid... what was used for your very first RB30det car that had 475HP?

13.)injectors - Are we certain that the RB25DE uses the same 270cc top feed, high impedance injectors that the RB20DET uses?

14.)Turbo - Due to the torquey nature of this engine, would PLAIN bearing turbo's be a better option

as I "ASSUME" (I know.. dangerous thing to do) they would spool up slower than ball bearing turbos and make the car

more controllable as it comes on boost?

Also, for up to 300rwkw, what internally gated turbo would fall in to a budget of under $2500? AND... fit the stock manifold.

15.)Intercooler - rb26dett intercoolers good enough?

16.)Air box - Stock R32 GTST air box with some form of hi flowing panel filter good enoug?

17.)BOV - surely the stock GTST ones are going to struggle to hold the pressure.. Can GTR stock plumback bovs be adapted and used successfully?

when they plumback, are there 2 return lines back to the air intake pipe or 1?

18.)Oil cooler - second hand Jap VR4 ones good enough with new custom lines? I can't remember the measurement but surely they would be better than nothing.

And if I was to set up a waterspray system for the intercooler, what's to stop me setting up another jet for the oil cooler?

19.)Those who put this engine in to an R32, there was discussion of brakets being made for the engine to mount it lower.

Anypics? Joel or Darren, how did you guys go? still using stock bonnet?

still using stock antisway bar under the car?

AAAAAAND I'm done.. (EDIT obviously I wasn't cause I just added from number 15 onwards..)

thanks

I believe you are talking about cermaic coating the pistons.

I've been quoted $38 a piston from HPC(RB30E forgies) don't forget the valves need to be done to get the full advantage of ceramic coating, SK knows more about this topic.

:P

We ceramic coat the piston crowns, the valve heads, the combustion chambers and the exhaust ports. We also oil retention coat the piston skirts.

I know every little bit helps but is it necessary for a street car?

I know I set my goal high but I will probably putt around the streets with power in between 200-250rwkw and be happy due to the torque compared to my old RB20 or even my current SR20.

so can you answer my 19 question SK?

Oh my, so many questions in one post GTST, lucky for you I am patient. Most people would just tell you to look up the thread as it is all there. My suggestions follow your questions;

1.)R32 RB25DE valve springs.

If I am not rebuilding the head and simply want to have the seat pressure tested, how is this done? What rating are the standard R32 RB25DE springs and what are the RB26DETT springs rating? (EG, the 25de has 10 lb springs and the 26dett has 15lb springs... ) what are the true ratings? How much are stock 26dett valve springs?

To measure seat pressure you need a valve spring pressure tester anda dial gauge.

RB26DETT valve springs are rated to handle boost, so 15 psi stronger than an N/A valve spring. RB26DETT valve springs are rated to handle 8,000 rpm, so another 10 psi stronger to hande that higher rpm.

You can't fit GTR valve springs to RB25 cylinder heads. They are different heights and diameters. For example RB25 vlave springs are shorter to allow for the hydraulic followers. You would have to change the complete valve train, cams valves, valve springs, colletts, followers and shims.

2.)For my Goal, will the stock 30E pistons be fine with the 8.3:1 comp ratio and a turbo which will need 1Bar to produce the power?

No problems, it will be bit doughy with compression that low.

3.)Head Gasket - Stock RB30E gasket and O-ring the block good enough for my goal?

Yep

4.)exhaust manifold - I'm unsure of what part needs to be removed/grinded from the water gallery in the RB30E block

to make the gasket and manifold fit.. does anyone have pics of the bottom end before and after the removal?

It is about 30 seconds work with the die grinder and it is bloody obvious. Just the tips of the lumps on the gallery down the side of the engine.

5.)Sump - removal of the fins inside the RB20DET sump. how much do you have to remove off them? or is it complete removal?  Won't this cause oil surge/starvation problems?

Just a small bend. makes no difference,

6.)Pistons - Stock RB30E pistons will be used. What was the process called that can be done to pistons

to make them not absorb as much heat.. I read it but can't find it again..

I believe there was also a cost per piston.. anyone remember or find it?

Ceramic coating, see previous post.
7.)Quench - Do I need to worry about this is I am using stock pistons?

But you are not using the stock head.

8.)CR - Should I bother removing some height off the block to increase the compression ratio?

Nope

9.)RODS - Prepped rods.. what is Prepping? what was the cost per rod?

Preparing usually means balancing and grinding off any small imperfections. Balancing is very important, the rest is debateable as to benefit.

10.)CRANK - linishing... again, what is it and what is the cost?

Polishing the bearing surfaces.

11.)Oil pump - RB25DET oil pump is what I plan to use.. Is second hand ok? Can you tell if they are faulty by visually inspecting them?

Not really, you can pick a really stuffed one when you pull it apart, it will be all scored and marked. To pick a slightly worn one get your machine shop to measure it up internally.

12.)ECU - Obviously R32 GTST ecu to run in. But to support my goal, Can the Stock ECU be chipped to handle?

Yep

13.)I mean to reach that power goal, surely a Z32 or bigger AFM is required along with injectors and FPR.

Yep

14.) Can you run these with a CHIPPED stock ECU?

Yep, but the tuner really needs to know his stuff

15.) Sydney kid... what was used for your very first RB30det car that had 475HP?

Motec M4A

16.)injectors - Are we certain that the RB25DE uses the same 270cc top feed, high impedance injectors that the RB20DET uses?

Sorry can't help, I used the RB20 inlet manifold, GTR injectors ands rail

17.)Turbo - Due to the torquey nature of this engine, would PLAIN bearing turbo's be a better option as I "ASSUME" (I know.. dangerous thing to do) they would spool up slower than ball bearing turbos and make the car more controllable as it comes on boost?

Sorry can't help, I never use plain bearing turbos

18.) Also, for up to 300rwkw, what internally gated turbo would fall in to a budget of under $2500? AND... fit the stock manifold.

Garret GT3040

15.)Intercooler - rb26dett intercoolers good enough?

R33/34 GTR shooooot yes.

16.)Air box - Stock R32 GTST air box with some form of hi flowing panel filter good enoug?

Yep but you might find the rubber pipe from the AFM to the turbo gets sucked closed. Best replaced with an alloy one. See Bass he is making them.

17.)BOV - surely the stock GTST ones are going to struggle to hold the pressure.. Can GTR stock plumback bovs be adapted and used successfully? when they plumback, are there 2 return lines back to the air intake pipe or 1?

Hard to beat those standard GTR BOV's. One pipe back to the inlet.

18.)Oil cooler - second hand Jap VR4 ones good enough with new custom lines? I can't remember the measurement but surely they would be better than nothing.

Yep

And if I was to set up a waterspray system for the intercooler, what's to stop me setting up another jet for the oil cooler?

The amount of water you would have to carry might slow the car down. Plus what happens when you run out of water? Hot engine?

19.)Those who put this engine in to an R32, there was discussion of brakets being made for the engine to mount it lower. Anypics? Joel or Darren, how did you guys go? still using stock bonnet? still using stock antisway bar under the car?

Ours used a SubZero Plenum and went straight in, no engine mount mods. Also had a big Whiteline stabiliser bar (standard shape) The RB26 cylinder headed RB31DET's fit straight in as well

20.)AAAAAAND I'm done..

Thank heavens, my fingers where wearing out:cheers:

2.)For my Goal, will the stock 30E pistons be fine with the 8.3:1 comp ratio and a turbo which will need 1Bar to produce the power?

Depends on tune. A bad one can kill an engine not a hp figure.

4.)exhaust manifold - I'm unsure of what part needs to be removed/grinded from the water gallery in the RB30E block

to make the gasket and manifold fit.. does anyone have pics of the bottom end before and after the removal

sit a rb20/25 manifold on the long motor...you will then see what needs 2 be removed....not much, just dont go nuts.

5.)Sump - removal of the fins inside the RB20DET sump. how much do you have to remove off them? or is it complete removal?

i used the rb20 sump and my fins were just bent down to clear the crank.

13.)injectors - Are we certain that the RB25DE uses the same 270cc top feed, high impedance injectors that the RB20DET uses?

yes.

14.)Turbo - Due to the torquey nature of this engine, would PLAIN bearing turbo's be a better option

as I "ASSUME" (I know.. dangerous thing to do) they would spool up slower than ball bearing turbos and make the car more controllable as it comes on boost?

Im using a rb20 highflow (been told it a t3 /t4 hybrid as well?...) spool time.....hmmm.....none. Boost is instant throttle response.

19.)Those who put this engine in to an R32, there was discussion of brakets being made for the engine to mount it lower.

Anypics? Joel or Darren, how did you guys go? still using stock bonnet?

still using stock antisway bar under the car?

My engine mounts ere just redrilled to drop the motor here it sits....12mm one side and 15mm the other i think...?

Joels ic piping is std, and clears the bonnet. Mine uses the other route over the radiator etc. and i had to chop the bonnet structure to make it "sort of" fit  antisway is std, but my strutbrace dont fit anymore

    • Ha, well, it's been.... a bit of a journey. Things have taken much longer than I'd hoped. I'll probably put up a thread at some stage. Hopefully soon. The car's not done any kms since my update in June though, put it that way.
    • Here's the chart for fuel pressure vs. current draw, assuming your base fuel pressure is 3 bar and you run like 0.5bar boost on WOT, you should only momentarily hit 9amps here and there. (Ignore my prev post, I cannot read a chart these days it seems)
    • Those comp test results are not hideous. Whether they are accurate or not (ie, when that comp tester says 140 psi, is the real pressure120, 140 or 160?) is unknown to us. The state of the battery used to crank it over is unknown, etc etc. Many people around here would say that the absolute values and the spread are perfectly fine to just add boost and keep going. I personally would be happier with a narrower spread than that, but even the diff between 125 and 145 is not terrible. That one cylinder at 125 though, has probably copped some damage relative to the others. You should inspect the valves seeing as you've got it open. Do you know how to measure installed ring gaps? That, and an inspection of the rings themselves, is how you will determine whether they need to be replaced. If you're not good to do these things, take the block and the pistons and rings to a shop that is, and ask them for the go/no-go on them. Do the bores need a hone at all? If so, you might well be justified in getting some different pistons in order to get away from the ring supply problem. Whether you're happy to spend a lot more money right now, on more gear, rather than less money, but an amount that looks stupid given that you will only get a handful of rings in exchange for that money, is for you to decide.
    • also possibly backed up to my filler and shat down it! 🤣
    • Ok so i would love some advice here please, i purchased an R33 a few months back and its had a few mods done to the engine, its an RB25det running a Master ECU, 1200cc injectors, bigger turbo, oil cooler, oil filter relocation kit, Spool H-beam rods, acl/ross pistons. When i removed the motor from the vehicle (as its getting a respray) i thought i would compression test it and these are the following results. Cylinder 1-145psi, Cylinder 2-143psi, Cylinder 3-125psi, Cylinder 4-145psi, Cylinder 5-140psi, Cylinder 6-135psi this test was done with the motor on the ground and powering up the starter motor. I dropped the sump and found broken oil squirters on cylinder 3,5 and 6. I was told my rings are probably worn so i stripped the motor completely to get a new set of rings for it. The trouble is no one has these rings anywhere and they have to be custom made by Ross over in the states and will cost about $600+$200 delivery. My question is how can i tell if my rings are at fault and if they are still ok and is this price ok for a set of rings?
