Hi guys,

Well this is the story, put a turbotech boost controller on the car didnt turn the noob or anything left it on standard boost. Everything was hooked up fine, took in for a spin around the block 5mins driving it was ok. then i hit the acclerater sightly and heard a little noise. suddenly i stoped at the lights and the car was idling like a PIG! and eventually just stoped completly. I tried to start it again, but it starts and doesnt keep the revs up. I pulled it to the side of the road, and took the boost controller off and put the standard soilnoid and Y piece back on. Tried to start it again but same issue didnt keep the revs and just turns off, with checking eveything all seemed fine. But i decided i could of maxed out my air flow meter or something so i disconnected the plug off the afm. And the car started and held its revs. It was good enough for me just to drive it home. I have no clue what happen, but my suggestion is its the afm, but i dont want to go out and buy another one and thats not the problem.

What do you guys think?

Also do r33 rb25det airflow meters fit on r34's or does it have to be a r34 afm? Anyone selling one or any suggestions where to find one from, Im located in melbourne.

I am pretty sure I have an AFM off my 34 gtt in the garage somewhere - last time I was looking to buy (6-12 months ago) they were approx $200 second hand max - not sure if the 33 ones are the same though.

Im no mechanic but it could be the afm given your diagnosis of the problem. You could *maybe* pop around and try before you buy as it doesn't take too long to swap over... will need some time to find it though.

Any sign of a popped vacuum line or anything? Something similar happened to me back in the day, playing with bleed valves...

Looked around havnt seem to find something yet. All i remember thou, with my old turbo 31, if you unpluged the afm the car will stop, but with the r34 it still runs even without the afm pluged in, is this normal? Also now if i plug the afm back in the car just stops, would a vacum hose affect the afm like this? Or do you guys think its something to do with with the actual afm itself? or what could be the problem?

i second that, you have a huge air leak somewhere try to listen for it or if its suss spray some water from a spray botle where you think it might be if the mist gets sucked into the engine the motor may run differently or stall. hope this helps.

P.s use a spray bottle and not a garden hose.... kidding

IC piping, and irrelevant but have you checked that the charcoal canister pipes are still on, vacuum leak sounds convincing in this situation, Although that said im going with Intercooler piping, check all joins as this will cause the above situation for sure. Been there done that on the 33 blown hose clamp is always fun to find but the easiest to fix.

Hi guys, but you have to take into consideration that when the afm plug is off the car idles at a decent rate and is also drivable but with not much power, but with the airflow meter plug disconnected, it just completly dies! Would an air leak cause this problem?

So in other words the car with no air flow meter RUNS! is this normal for a r34?

got nfi then, hence if its off its just going off base maps :S if its on it dies, i must say have u tried setting the ecu in diagnostic mode, i dont know if you can or cant for the 34 someone with more info may help

Airleaks can be assosiated with rough idle and dying im assuming afm that has a fault could do the same if its connected. if its reading 5V hence max airflow it would compensate with loading for fuel hence instant rich then die :S im lost on this one so am out

UPDATE...... 1am and i decide to go fix the problem, lol cant get no sleep soo after looking and looking i found that the intercooler hose clamp underneath right on the bottom was disconnected, completly blown off. Put it back on and tightned the clamps and it was PERFECT!.... thanks for all your help guys, with out your advise i prob still would of been stuck now.

It was strange thou because the turbotech bleed vavle was only on preset boost, so i don't know why it blew off, maybe it became loose overtime.

Another thing i found out, and is handy for r34 owners is that when your airflow meter is disconnected the car still runs well enough to drive it home if your not to far away, but i wouldnt advise anyway to drive a long distance with no airflow meter.

Well i hope someone in my situation in the future, not hoping this happens to someone :happy: , can learn off this :D

Good to hear you fixed it man!

My engine dies when the AFM is disconnected - have tried it before and it dies everytime. I only have std ECU management, I assume aftermarket electronics would make this situation different. Dont know if you have a PowerFC or one of those others... ? Anyway, Im starting to think I have some loose piping somewhere... boost issues whilst running std setup. Will start my own thread one day :P

Ohhh i have the same problem now! but my r34 is an auto and is stock. . after i put the apexi power intake it drove fine for a while but started dying exactly how u said!! Its getting looked at now and weve tried new afm... yet to check the cooler piping but does anyone else know what it could be?

I drive around all the time with no AFM :) Am I doing something wrong? :)

    • I am probably calling this too early but I think I found what part of my problem is. I have a couple of dents that are fairly close to each other and I tried to fix them individually. Recently I put one larger coat across all the dents and sanded it and for the first time ever it's all even except for the edge where the bare metal is, I just need to put some putty there. I'm ordering some better longer blocks that are more flexible. Other good news is that the other repairs on my panel are flat even with the guidecoat. It's these 2 dents which are an absolute c*nt l lol.
    • Murray will have better input, but I'd be going with less filler, and aimed at the low spots mainly, and hence won't need as much sanding, which then means get the guide coat on earlier. That's how I'd do it, BUT, I'm not a pro, I'm a DIY hack who will then get the shits halfway through, and have one spot awesomely repaired, and the other spots look like a 3 year old was left unsupervised with workshop tools...
    • Where is the most common place to locate it? Disappointing that Garrett won’t make a fitting for it since they know everyone will use it
    • A HICAS fault really should not cause the engine to go into limp mode. These cars are so old that the systems barely talk to one another. The thump might be the lockoff solenoid valve for the HICAS (the safety valve) getting closed, to lock the rear wheels "straight". I say "straight", because when my HICAS used to shit itself before I took off and nuked it from orbit, it would lock up with the rear wheels wildy non-straight and you'd need 45° of steering wheel to drive straight. Take off and nuke it from orbit. First step is to pull the smaller of the two plugs out of the HICAS CU. See if it stops misbehaving. You can also (whilst leaving it plugged in) try to get the HICAS CU into diagnostic mode by doing the pedal dance, or by connecting a CONSULT capable diagnostic reader into the car and seeing what it has to say for itself. Can't do either of these with it unplugged though. 1st gen HICAS is a ballache. I would do a complete delete. I did do a complete delete.
