Guys,

do i need to restrict oil supply to ball bearing turbos or just connect up the old supply system.

regards

PS i did hit the search button.

yes it must be restricted.

ring gcg and they will post you out a restrictor to suit your oil feed -4 etc..

cheers dangerman.

i have been doing the search thing again and found a link where they say the garrets have a restricter built in quite a few guys on here commented in that link that garret do have this restricter in place.

So you were perfectly correct

is this for all turbo upgrades or from non bb to bb? say for an r33 to gt3040? ball bearing to ball bearing..i assume this is ok.

if you change your oil feed line then you need a new restrictor.

all garret BB turbos need less then 50psi (i think thats right) so when your engines cold or the oil pressure is high you need to slow down the flow with a small restrictor that slides inside your oil supply line where it bolts onto the block.

Its a 2 minute install.

But you only need this if you have - at some stage - taken it out. R33 Gtst's all come restricted from the factory, they are already running with a BB turbo.

Well thats my spin on it anyway.

ok so let me get this right, im buying a GCG either 3040 or 3540, doesnt matter anyway, i wont use the standard oil lines so ill get braided with fittings etc...does this mean ill need a new restrictor that goes inline or is it in the block already because its already got a BB?

what happens if you dont have a restrictor and it runs more than 50 psi?

yes you will need a restrictor

the standard turbo runs standard lines which have a restrictor built into them.

once you remove the turbo and the standard oil supply line you have no restrictor and will therefore get full oil pressure thru the turbo. bad

so get a restrictor from gcg etc and it will keep your turbo happy.

ps new garret turbos are NOT covered by waranty unless you have a restrictor.

It depends what turbo far as i know.

Most BB Garretts that ive seen have an internal restrictor on the cartridge itself, meaning you dont need an inline one

I never ran one with my GT30 and it was fine.

There was no requirement/advice from Garrett to say that i required one.

The turbo did die once due to lack of oil, but that was another problem unrelated with high/too much pressure, and while it was apart you could see the restrictor clearly.

    • Ah! I actually managed to snag a lightly used set.... that aren't so suitable for me right now. They don't work on a GTT without some cutting or creative heat moulding. I thought about reselling them myself cause I didn't want to murder them, but it looks like I'm probably going to attempt to murder them/melt them because I may as well. @GTSBoy @PranK can somebody close this thread?
    • Hey mate,  I have a set, one is slightly damaged but wont be noticable once installed.  Shoot me a message if your still after them
    • I couldn't wait But, the black constant tension hose clamps were too thick and there wasn't enough clearance at the T/B and I couldn't get it to seat properly, so I had use a silver one there I also added some 3" silicone over the alloy bit that goes through to hole on the radiator support as it looked like it was sitting on the edge of the hole in the radiator support, I never noticed a rattle or anything, but there was a witness mark It is basicly done, and I can live with the silver hose clamp at the T/B, I will get a black clamp for the head vent though where it is attached to the bulkhead fitting  It never stops...LOL, only issue now with the shock tower brace is it slightly touches the under bonnet liner now, if I leave it it will either wear some paint off the brace where it touches, or damage the liner, so I removed the liner to see what I have to work with, with the liner removed I have about 20mm of clearance, but sadly the middle part of the underside of the bonnet is only dusted with paint and looks crap, so I cannot have that, but.... as I have a roll of Carbuilders premium under bonnet insulation in the garage laying around that is only 5.5mm thick (we were going to use it on the boys Patrol, but he crashed the front of it a few months and it was written off, hence why he now drives my old Honda Accord Euro), I'll use the OEM liner as a template and get the Carbuilders stuff fitted up to cover that dusted paint up
    • You have a knack for photography my friend. It makes the 86 look like a complete bucket. The 34 went with you to Europe and back. It's special. (we all feel the same about our 'shitboxes' that every bystander seems to absolutely love)
