in hot 4s they r doin up a project R34. they put on a 3" turbo back zorst, fmic and a pod. they claimed that boost rose to 10psi and the stock ecu couldnt handle it and was running rich. they then installed a fuel cut defender. that took care of the fuel cut problem and they also claimed that they go a 30kw power gain after installing it. i cant see how they got this much power from it. i have same mods on my R33 and considering gettin one. is it possible to gain that kind of power or is that just bull s@#t?

You can get some FCD's that work with r33's but it is pretty risky. try for a proper ecu if you can if not then I do know that Unique Auto Sports have got a few models in stock that they sell and tune with good results. check them out www.gtr.com.au

I had a a FCD in my car - worked well for when I had it, but I think the fuel pump couldnt handle it and almost shat itself. I then got a powerFC and has been running better, much better.

For the money, unless you find a fcd 2nd hand - go an ecu.

All an FCD does is clamp the AFM voltage at a maximum, so that ECU doesn’t go Rich & Retard mapping (do a search if you don’t know what that means).

So the 30 rwkw is possible, all you have to do it set the boost (actually airflow) at a level which makes the ECU go R&R. That will knock 25 to 40 rwkw off the power straight away. Then use the FCD to “clamp” the AFM voltage to a level just below that which the ECU goes R&R. Bingo a 30 rwkw increase is possible.

But (there is always a but) what if you set the boost (actually airflow) at a level just below just below that which the ECU goes R&R? It won’t loose that 25 to 40 rwkw, maybe the slightly lower boost would only cost 5 to 10 rwkw. So fitting the FCD would achieve NOTHING.

So the ACTUAL (real world tuning) gain from fitting the FCD is more like 5 to 10 rwkw.

In addition there are draw backs to using an FCD, they only have one voltage to clamp at, regardless of engine rpm. So you can’t tune the A/F ratios, you get whatever part of the map that the ECU uses at that (fiddled) AFM voltage. Hence why an AFM voltage “bender” like an SAFC or a DFA are far superior. They allow “tuning” of the AFM voltage ramp, so you can get reasonable A/F ratios across the rpm range.

As usual with magazines, they only tell you 10% of the story.

i had problems raising the boost anything above standard (132rwkw) as the ecu would shit itself. so i got a hks fcd installed and adjusted on the dyno and i got 175rwkw at 10psi with a much better power curve and afr's, so yeah it helps if your having problems like i was but obviously the more involved computers are better like mentioned before

    • I checked the injectors again (1 and 2, since they’re easiest to access) to make sure they weren’t clogged. Even though the entire fuel system had been cleaned, I wanted to be certain. Everything looked clean, so I reinstalled and connected everything. When I started the car to confirm everything was okay, it immediately revved up high, so I shut it off straight away. I checked to see if I’d missed a vacuum hose or something, but everything was connected. On the second attempt, the car ran without the high idle, but I noticed a distinct “compressed air” sound coming from the engine bay. Tracing the sound, I pushed injector #6 forward slightly and the noise stopped — it turned out it wasn’t seated properly, despite the fuel rail being bolted down. While holding it in place, the car idled steadily without stalling and ran for over 5 minutes. At this point, I pulled all six injectors out just in case I hadn’t seated them correctly or dirt had gotten onto the O-rings. Unfortunately, I discovered that I had damaged 3 out of 6 injectors (the OEM 270cc ones) during installation. So yes, this was my fault. Since only the pintle caps were damaged, I’ve ordered a Fuel Injector Service Kit from NZEFI to refurbish them. In the meantime, I reinstalled my new injectors – the car now idles fine for over 15 minutes without stalling. I have not attempted to drive it so far. It’s not perfect yet, as it hesitates when the throttle is pressed, but it’s a big improvement. Unplugging the IACV with the new injectors idles at around 800rpm, even with the IACV screw tightened fully. But this is probably due to tune.
