Hey guys,

I've got a R33 GTS (RB25DE - non turbo) series 1 stock, and a couple of days ago while i was driving it the engine just switched off. The CD, lights were still on but the engine died. I just stopped and restarted the engine and it was fine. But the next day it got worst and worst and now after a few minutes (if im lucky), the engine just cuts out. I can still restart the engine but it doesnt last for long. :P

I have been searching the forum and yes, there are a lot of topics similar but none exactly the same with a clear answer to the problem. I'm thinkin it could be the ignition coils?!?

Can anyone help????

Thanks Guys!

hmm i would have said originally that your alternator might be screwed but the fact that your cd player and stuff still works i would say no. Change your fuel filter... when it turns off does it splutter before hand or just stop dead cold. also does your car have an immobiliser ???

Initally when it turned off it was very smooth and quick. But now its a little slower now, as if the battery has been disconnected. I have checkd da battery and replaced it with a new one coz da old one was almost dead.

Yea, i dont think it would be my immobiliser coz i can still start it up. My car has done a few K's (200,000k +) and to date it has never had any trouble, very reliable. When i restart it, it starts up normally as if nothing is wrong - of course until it dies again

thanks

Got a good workshop mechanic you trust?

Take it to him ASAP - well, first thing monday morning

I have a feeling fuelling system as said before, get him to check from start to finish.

So when you kickit over - does it stutter for a bit or kick right over like normal?

yea thanks man, i thnk i will give him da car tomorrow.

When i kick it over it just starts like normal. The car drives normal too. The only thing is it switches off every x minutes. So you dont think its da coils?

It could be, although Im no mechanic! :glare:

Just from what you were saying, it runs, then dies, but all your other power works - stereo etc - so yeah, my first thoughts is somewhere in fuelling system/lines.

How long does it run for once you restart it? few minutes?

Have you noticed any difference to how the car runs of lately? sluggish?Struggles to rev?

Thanks guys :glare:

You've cleared up a lot of confusion. I also thought that if it was the coils then my car would be running less cylinders and sounding like shit. But i wasnt really sure to be honest..... The fuel system sounds more realistic.

If anyone else has had a similar problem and have fixed it, let us kno

Cheers boys, appreciate it

update mate?

hey guys,

took da car for a drive yesterday, and b4 i started it up i unplugged da ignition module to check for any bent pins or loose connections etc. Anyway, it looked fine and then i plugged it back it (both connections) making sure it was plugged in all da way and not loose.

I drove it to my mechanic but there was nothing wrong with the car. it was FINE!! no more cutting out, no more troubles!! i told my mechanic and he sprayed some silicon in the terminal connectors and then we left it running for ages, not a single problem! took it for a spin and it was da same, no probs

So i guess it might have been a dirty or loose connection or something. Im gonna keep driving this weekend to make sure that that was the problem. Hopefully it is. But if it is the Ignition Module, then at least its gonna be easy for me to change it!

I will keep ya updated!

Thanks guys :P

Hey mate, this sounds exactaly the same as my brothers car as i mentioned above about the fuel pump... It was towed to the mechanic and he said he started it, and had to let it run for a while before evetually the pump died again... so maybe its the same, looks like it may be on its last life...

FARK!!! i was driving today and i everything was good for da first trip (10 minutes), but after i drove back home it cut out on me and died at the lights. I started it back up and drove home. I then checkd da connections etc on the ignition module but no change. I let it run for 5 minutes without any problems and then took it for a 20 minute drive. As i was almost home it died on me again as i was breaking at the lights. Once again i started it up and drove it home.

I then drove it to dinner about 3 hrs later, where it was fine, but after dinner on the way home it started to drive like it had no petrol. The jerking of the car was giving me the shits. after about 5 minutes it went away and i was able to get it home safetly. I called my mechanic and he still thinks its the Ignition module, he said if its farking up it will cause no sparks and therefore that jerking (no petrol) drive.

Hey man, did your brother experience this?! I hope its just da module. How much did it cost for your bro to fix da fuel pump?! THanks

    • Put a fuel pressure gauge on it. Replace the turbos. Probably completely separate issues.
    • What copper washer do you guys use on the bleeder bolts? The existing one I have I had no idea where to find it in a local store, I did buy some online but that are only 1mm thick whereas my old one is 2mm+ thick and when I put the new washer out and squeeze the top radiator hose I can hear a bit of air but not with the old one. Does this matter? The new one doesn't leak, but the inner diameter is a bit loose whereas the old one threads on the bolt.
    • Howdy all, after being out a few weeks ago on a spirited drive in my GTR I have 2 issues that oddly have appeared at the same time. Whilst accelerating quickly through the gears all of a sudden i’ve lost power at the top of third gear (below redline around 6000rpm) for no obvious reason.    From that point onwards the car has been running rich on idle, won’t really rev under load without a ton of black smoke and the odd backfire, and dying as a pull up to a set of lights unless I keep the revs up around 1500rpm. In addition when shutting down the car that same night (I was 10 minutes from home) I noticed one of the turbos was significantly noisy on wind down when shutting off the engine. After letting the car cool down overnight it starts up fine, although once it gets to temp the revs start to creep up and down, the exhaust is darker than it should be and it also sounds like it’s running rich (fat note) I’ve put a new set of plugs in it - no change, the old plugs all seemed OK with two of them being somewhat richer/fueled up than the other 3 with 1 being borderline. I’ve smoked tested the intake system via the front of the Turbos, found a split vacuum hose going to the factory boost gauge sender, which I have since replaced.  Also found another leak on the gasket coming off the rear turbo outlet, have also replaced this. After fixing both of these leaks - still have the running rich issue. I’ve also tried another pair of AFM’s - no change here After pulling off the front turbo intake pipes, there is obvious shaft play in the front turbo, which now hisses loudly on light revvs although I can’t see why this would make the car run funny even under idle. I’m curious to know why it’s running rich before I potentially replace/rebuild turbos. The car is completely stock <50,000kms  other than an exhaust. Oil and coolant are all clear. I haven’t bothered with coil packs as it looks like they won’t be the issue due to condition of the plugs. Any help appreciated as I cry myself to sleep!
    • No probs at all. I used to love trying to dig up obscure info for those in need where possible going back 20+ years on SAU.  I did have another look and couldn't come up with any closer match. I'm leaning towards those skirts in your first pic are custom fitments, cut down/extended or from another car entirely and modded to fit an R34 sedan. I would've thought someone in Japan had them and taken a photo at some stage over the last 2 decades but there's nothing. Someone out there must know surely.
