I stand by my statment nitro = fake hp

and im not really scared of racing someone with nos, seeing as my car will be build with a 396 D-1 Supercharge (600rwhp) and if i had $1,200 to throw away i might put the 500 shot of nos (not likly).

Why nos = fake hp. u press a switch and u get a shot of 100hp 10second later its all gone, wat is the point it is pointless yes in 1/4mile it might help but on the street it wont help shit, wanna race someone on the free-way and there are cars u cant really turn on the nos. try to beat the guy u r racin' and try to controll the speed and dodge the cars too.

if u race someone without nos and they beat u and they havnt spent as much money as u have in your car i will laught my ass off.

i guess its just my 2cents. but goodluck with the nos hope it doesnt F&*&*K up your car and hope to see you on the track soon cya!

Last time I saw TRY09 do a run, they used a short shot of nitrous on the line just before launch.  I asked Mick later and he said it was to spool up the turbo against the torque converter so it had boost before the launch.  Or something like that.........

Hmmm that's interesting... I suppose a tiny activation (perhaps 0.4 seconds? :D) *juuuust* before launch would help spool up the turbo, and I'm not too clued up about automatics (and proud of it ;)) so perhaps you could help answer your own question. Would the torque convertor of the slushbox absorb the extra power made momentarily by that tiny squirt of nitrous?

Basically you're injecting air and fuel into your cylinders anytime you're activiating nitrous, so it's making power. That power has to go *somewhere*... In a manual, I guess it goes straight into the gearbox (or free-spinning clutch) if you're still staging...

To be completely honest, I'm not too sure about people who use the nitrous prior to actually launching. Perhaps someone with practical experience with this can comment?

can our internals hake nos... and for how long

i know my mate had an old rx7 rotor ran nos threw it flat stick 3 weeks later he was telling me he ripped out the motor with a cro bar..

melted everything inside

i knwo routers can hake alot more punch when it comes to nos then our motors

so will it do any damage?

or have u changed the internals to something stronger?>

or will i be seeing some pistons fly down here west once u start her up??

You might like to look at my post about how much Nitrous costs to use for me over 3 years at the drag strip. Basically it's a cheap way to get your thrills, up to a point. I'm certainly not against achieving higher horsepower without nos btw. At the end of the day what we all love is g-forces.

You may not understand the reality of nitrous use if you believe all I get out of it is 10seconds. The bottle will at this stage last me at least 200seconds. Now unlike yourself I'm not really advocating street racing nitrous or not. Irrespective of whether you have nitrous or not the power to weight is what counts and how well your car is setup suspension and brakes wise to handle that power.

I'd like you to experience a nitrous equiped vehicle, if I have the oppertunity I'll give you a go of mine. I'm quite sure it will change your mind. Having said that it's fair enough not to need it when you are having a hell of a time controlling a car with 600rwhp, theres plenty of power to keep you happy (but never satisfied).

At the end of the day 'to each his own'. Opinions matter when it comes to your pride and joy so if you don't think much of nos, correctly informed or not don't get any.

If you know how much power the standard internals can take then don't exceed this level. Nitrous is NO DIFFERENT to any other power increase.

Eg.

Engine power limit = 500HP

Present power = 400HP

Maximum increase allowable = 100HP

That means an upgraded turbo can be upto 100HP better than the present one. OR 100HP shot of nos. If you go higher than 100HP then the internals are at risk.

The most common mistake with nos is people exceed the limits of the engine, just like people exceed the limits of boost on a stock skyline turbo. If you have understanding and common sense you are safe as houses.

Yep Merli, you have hit it on the head, that's where the 0.4 seconds came from. It apparently creates sufficicent exhaust to build max boost while the car is held stationary against the trans brake. The torque converter allows the engine to spin at increasing RPM. So you don't get such a savage NOS shock loading in the pistons, rods and crank. When you drop the trans brake, it is already at max boost and you use the throttle to control the traction.

From what I could tell no other NOS was used in the rest of the run, just off the line.

This adds to what Rev posted, as that engine was already at its maximum power handling capacity without the NOS, so it was only used for turbo spool up prior to launch.

Just in case you think I am going soft on NOS..........

Hi Rev, I don't really agree with your calculations about the costs of NOS versus bigger turbo, ECU etc. You can't use the NOS on the street or the circuit, but you can use the bigger turbo, ECU etc. So if you add up all the time you spend driving the car and compare it to the times that you can use the NOS, I think the value for money is pretty average.

And, before you get into not needing the extra power on the street, don't tell me that you never use full thottle anywhere but on the track. Crikey I used full throttle 6 times (in short bursts) coming to work this morning and I sure used it last night going home. You have to, to get in front of those AMG things.

I see where you're coming from now, and I apologise for my initial outburst.

You're right, in a way, if that's all that nitrous is being used for. But that's not the case. With the extreme end of nitrous use in drag racing like you're talking about, they would still employ nitrous off the line for a few seconds to help their 60 foot times.

But that's seriously a very very small percentage of nitrous users. As I mentioned before, the great percentage of nitrous users in drag racing use it for the duration of their run, as it is easier on the engine than using a massive shot just to get the car off the line.

In fact, many drags racers opt to use a LARGER shot of nitrous, and turn DOWN their boost, as the nitrous hits a lot harder and most importantly FASTER than boost ever will...

No this is not correct!

NOS is a inert gas (its non flammable) it works by chilling the air which compresses it allowing more air into your motor it has the same affect as rasing your boost.

I dont think its recommended to ba activates at xxxx RPM

Its more like its recommended to be activated when at WOT or at something like 85% throttle, that wat sufficient fuel is flowing.

But at for example 3000 RPM on the strip, it is very likely that u would b at WOT, therefore that is why someone may have recommended it to u.

    • Well, I'm tired. I'm tired because about 4PM yesterday, before today's appointment someone immediately bought my bumper. They couldn't get it any other day as they're on the way back to NSW. So I had to do that big GTR conversion I had been planning. Unfortunately, the information on SAU about what you need and how this is done is incomplete. So what should be a simple bolt on affair, yeah, it's not. Did you know if you use all GTR items the bonnet won't close? This little manuever sent me into about 1am the night before trying to dodge a way to get it closed. I will have to revisit this in the next few days  - or maybe not, I may let a body shop figure it out. It all needs to come up and my motivation to pull the bumper off is low. It also seems to hit things in the bay where the GTT bonnet didn't. Yes I used 100% new OEM GTR items. Today, I had the joy of driving to the dyno looking like this: Given I had roughed in the fuel and given sensible but pretty conservative timing, I didn't really bet on having the car drive out any real difference than when it drove in. Sadly due to a miscommunication and laptop fun and games (and almost bricking the dongle, prayers and firmware updates indeed), I ended up using HP Tuner credits to licence the car that was already licenced. So in the end my laptop was used. It turns out my butt dyno is still well calibrated after all this time. The 325kw was on 74% Ethanol, the 313kw line was on 98. The other line is the 'before' line which was 281kw. While the numbers are pretty low, they're pretty in line with what you'd expect. Even if US dynos bump the whole result up about 50KW, gaining 10-15% is similar gains.  The curve of the cam is pretty much spot on with what was discussed as well. All this said, it still feels bad to not see the number you secretly want to see. Even if the car drove great beforehand, and I knew pretty confidently the car would drive out much the same way it drove in due to the nature of a wellish dialled in LS1 not gaining much if anything at all from being tuned from where it was. As expected, the car isn't particularly sensitive to running it at anywhere between 12.0 and 13.0 - And the initial timing at 20deg and 12.0 made 308KW. So 3 degrees of timing, and leaning it out to 12.7 for 5kw, anything above stopped giving any benefit until E85 (which has an additional 2 deg as before). Car itself behaved entirely fine. I found out that 100C = 1.15V! IAT at about 7pm was 19C. I might mess with the bonnet mounting.. but given the REO NEEDS TO BE CHOPPED TO FIT A GTR BAR this is possibly something I may leave gathering (more) dust until it returns to paint jail.

    • Did you use an electronic speedo drive? Does you speedometer read all the way to 180km?
