Hey all, not often i post in here

Decided to get off my arse and do some research for upgrading my aus R31 front brakes. I know that straight away i could go to 5 stud by swapping to HR31 / GTS struts with floating hubs, then using s13/14 bits to get the desired result. However this line is not feasible at this time, plus i wanted to research other options for more accessible (and possibly cheaper) parts to do the same job. Pete (66 skyline GT) is going to be helping me, so custom isnt really an issue, as we're in the process of sorting the rear end out for 5 stud.

Does anyone have any idea what cars (either within the nissan family or outside it) have a similar front end setup that can allow me to keep my current / slightly modified arrangement and carry across some decent brake options?

Current setup: Koni Red adjustables, Aurora custom springs, S13 lower control arms, Whiteline F/R swaybars, Noltec Adj Panhard Rod.

As far as i know i cant carry the Koni front inserts across to HR struts, or can i? If so, the next question is how?

Making caliper adapters isnt an issue as Pete has said he can pretty much knock up anything. Mainly wanting some larger rotors (to match some larger calipers of course) and a 5 stud arrangement

Any thoughts are helpful. This hasnt been posted on the R31 Forum tech section as i assume the only answer id get would be in regards to the known S13/S14 arrangement. Looking at this purely to open up possible avenues for future development

Cheers

How bout you drive the thing instead of being all hektik with 5 stud ya mong.

Like I said matty... a Commo caliper/rotor arrangement might be good, Cheap and loads of pad/rotor options, redrilled of course, but also maybe an similar sort of setup to petes? GTR or 33 GTS-T calliper/commo rotor but with 5 stud? We've got the rear setup sorted now, now to just figure out the fronts eh?

Should have just gone S13 LOL :D

I think you people need to find a machine shop thats prepared to machine up front hubs with the flange drilled for 5 x 114.4 PCD . This flange needs offset inwards by the same amount as the thickness of the later type disc over studs system . Honestly there are that many people wanting to do this that if you got a large enough group buy happening they would not be that expensive . Another option could be to see how difficult it would be to modify the R30/31 front stub to take an R32/3/4 cartridge style hub and bearing . Another could be to find another hub system that has the same stud PCD from another car manufacturer ie Ford ?

Cheers A .

I reckon this would still be a fair chunk of coin to achieve..... and then you still have to find a rotor/caliper arrangement that will fit up to that. Need to be machined for the front wheel bearing as well... I wonder if falcon hubs are similar? Might be able to machine them to fit?

A member is doing this on the R31skylineclub.com site.... still waiting to see how it all eventuates. Looks like the goods so far, seems a bit easier to just go S13 setup, for me anyways.

Wish it was as easy as the rear LOL...(well, Im using Hydraulic handbrake, matty wants to kepp his stock cable arrangment.) But I think he's switching to a EB rotor with a stock calliper and redrilling hubs

Im using a EB falcon rotor, with the stock hubs redrilled to 5 x 114.3, and a VS commodore calliper, and a autosport hydro hanny

as ben said im still needing the cable handbrake up rear as it will be a daily driven car, and having a hydro only setup isnt effective.

havent 100% sat down and worked out what exactly the rear will run, its more getting bigger discs and calipers up front that im finding and important issue. Stock size (slotteds) are fine, but still id rather a bit bigger for piece of mind

ok,

firstly: there are a few options, you can stick to the aus r31 front struts and have the rotor machined off leaving the hub with the 4 x 114.3 stud pattern, then the other problem is the 90mm calipar spacing with the aus strut. a bracket is required to allow the 4 pot r32 onwards calipars to be mounted.

secondly: Hr31 front struts, they have the 100mm calipar spacing required for the nissan 4 pot calipars, there is a slight mod the the incert konis shock required to get them the fit, grind off part of the little knob at the bottom of the incert until it fits??, the rotors and calipars are a great improvement to the aus spec items alone, slight spacing of r32 rotors is all that is required to fit to go to an r32 calipar rotor set up, you may need to space out your brake line connection with copper washers so they fit tightly..

Budget wise these are the best 2 options.....

stud pattern involves re-drilling ither the r32 rotor to the 4x 114.3 pattern or redrilling the already machined hubs to the 5 x 114.3 pattern? the other option here is finding a set of Z31 turbo hubs, standard 5 x 114.3 pattern but very very rare and $$$$.....

looking at the power figure you have to date i'd go just the HR31 struts with HR31 rotors and calipars... in QLD you'd have no problem getting it engineered with those stoppers alone.....

a mate just built an rb30et with a hiflow VL turbo sitting on the side, according the the machanic good for 200+rwkw at 18psi and with this in mind the engineer had no problems signing off with just the HR31 brake set up and new pads...

    • Seat of the pants assessment of the new intake: The car is way less "doughy" when hitting the loud pedal, especially off idle when stopped or in traffic, I did use a cheapo lazer thermal thingo to measure the temp around where the pod filter got its air, it was between 55 - 60°C, in saying this the car was shut off and not moving, so the OEM intake pipe was not supplying any fresh air to where the pod was when the car was at least moving A weird bonus was induction noise on the throttle in the cabin increased a bit,  I was worried that I was actually going to lose some of that induction noise I love so much, outside though, when I got the daughter to do a WOT drive by pass for me, the induction noise has increased alot when on the throttle, not quite ITB doort, but well up there I'm extremely happy with the results and have been exploring the country roads in the region  As for house mods: 1.New front fence is up and is awesome, it really upgraded how the joint looks from the street, and the added security is nice 2. Electricians have replace some interior lights, and with more lighting in the garage, a few new motion detecting lights out the front above the garage, front room, and at the front door, which I have already found heaps helpful coming and going, also now has fancy pants CCTV all round the house The only hold point for power though is the solar and batteries due to supply issues, although this will happen over the next few weeks 3. I have done a heap of landscaping out the front and I'm almost ready to do a new small retaining wall with some nice blocks to replace the brick and cemented in rocks around the raised garden beds cemented in river stone "was the fashion at the time" the house was built. I currently have a pallet of retaining wall blocks and 2 bulka bags of 20mm blue metal to replace the wood chip that is in the raised garden beds around the house 4. I now have 3 big raised garden beds for out the back to grow some vegetables, about 70cm high, 200cm long and 100cm wide 5. My 2 compost bins are already pretty full with brown, green and kitchen waste from the landscaping I'vedone so far, but they will probably take a few months to break down, so anything else that gets chopped, trimmed, and kitchen waste will just start filling the base of the raised garden beds to about 30cm before I start throwing 40cm of good compost, and stuff, for the vegetables to grow in, I'll need a few ton of compost and soil, but the local supplier can sent me bulka bags of the stuff Basically the logs, wood chips and a few strategically placed rocks for drainage, will give the beds some good organic materials down low to break down over time, and they will hold moisture during the warmer months to save the water in my big arse water tank if we don't get alot of rain So, all in all, the car and house mods are going well, and I'm really enjoying being retired, I sleep in too 0700 and slowly plod around inside until I feel like actually doing anything, and only work in the yard for as long as want, which has actually been alot over the last few weeks,  although when you look at it, it seems that not a huge amount of work has been done,  until I look at the before I started the work pics Happy days and good times indeed
    • hahaha yeah. Plan is to get side skirts and probably just rear pods. But going to do them one-by-one. I've got a set that I really like from RHDJapen, but that one isn't shipped to AU. So need to find someone who can get it for me
