Hey all, my turbo blew on my 33 series 1 yesterday and it obviously needs to be replaced. Im wanting to replace it with something bigger/better or get mine highflowed and rebuilt. Got a few questions

1. How much am I looking at for a rebuild and to get mine highflowed. Im in Brisbane any good places?

2. I will have a budget of around 1k for a new one, what turbo should I be looking at getting for this price?

3. How vital is it to get your car tuned if I replace it with an aftermarket turbo? (I have standard everything)

Any other helpful advice you wanna pass on to me about replacement turbos etc would be very much appreciated guys. Still learning about it all.... Thanks for your time. Here is my email if anyone wants to help me out on msn.

get a sliding performance high-flow jobbie

but you'l need an aftermarket computer, fuel pump, intercooler, injectors if you want to make the most of your new turbo, also your stock clutch will need replacing in no time :wub:

and a good tune !

if uve only got 1k get a high flow from slide, as a gcg or equivalent ball bearing one will set u back at least $1500. u will definitely need an aftermarket computer or piggyback. ud also need a bigger fuel pump and some injectors or at least a fuel reg.

What birnie said is spot on the money. Agreed 100%.

Putting in an aftermarket turbo without a tune is not recommended for a few reasons. It's not really safe (if the airflow is in excess of generally what's safe. As birnie said, if boost is lowish, it MIGHT not be dangerous. This leads me onto the next point.

It is of no benefit to have an untuned computer wiht an aftermarket turbo. It will be slower, both because the ECU can't handle it, as well as the fact that naturally, a bigger turbo is less responsive.

At the moment, I've got a highflow on my car untuned, and it's a lot slower.

so at a very minimum, you're looking at least at the cost of a new fuel pump, ecu, tune, turbo, clutch (won't handle the power), tyres (traction for the power), maybe wheels, diff (better traction), suspension (traction), exhaust, cat, intercooler and boost controller.

Injectors and MAF would be recommended too to take full advantage.

Another vote here for the Slide hi-flow

When you say your car has "stock everything", does that include exhaust and intercooler?

To get the best bang for your buck and semi-decent results, you will at least need a turbo back exhaust and a bigger intercooler (front mount or maybe R34 sidemount), as well as some type of ECU (even a piggyback like an SAFC will get you bye).

$1K isn't going to cover it really, as you're looking at that kind of money just for the hi-flow. Cooler and exhaust if you shop around/buy second hand you can probably pick up for another ~$700, ~$200 for an SAFC, then installation (if you can't do it yourself) and tuning (~$200) on top of that.

This kind of setup on a lowish boost level (11 - 12psi) should see you around the 200rwkw mark, but a stock clutch isn't going to last long at that power level.

Fuel pump, AFM, injectors should be fine until you hit 220rwkw+

Thank you heaps for the help so far guys, its opened my eyes a bit! As I said still learning about it all so sorry if I ask stupid questions. Ok so, if "light" driving and just taking it easy in the car for a while as I do anyway, will I get away with the following, while I save for the rest.

2.Around how much am I looking at (approx)

Don't bother with a front mount or after market clutch if you haven't got that much cash to play with. An r34 side mount intercooler is always a good up grade for up to 220rwkW.

A high flow is a better option than putting another standard turbo back on because it might break in month, you just don't what condition it'll be in. A direct replacement if you mean aftermarket will be far too expensive.

The cheapest way out of it: standard turbo $300 + $300 labour (maybe, not sure though)

The most sensible way out it: Slide standard hi-flow $890 exchange + safc $210 + 300 labour + tune $200.

As for shops just ask around, friends and other skyline owners.

You can put a Highflow, or just plain bigger turbo on without doing anything else, and as long as the factory (or equivalent) Wastegate actuator (5psi crack-open pressure) is used, the factory ECU will have no probs. In fact, it'll probably drop close to a pound of boost in the top end, since you won't get the stock turbo's boost creep.

(Explanation: The stock turbo has a tight exhaust housing, and small exducer, which means that nearly all the gas going through there is forced to work HARD spinning the turbo faster. When the wastegate can no longer bypass enough exhaust gas around the exhaust wheel at high load/rpm to properly limit what goes through the turbo housing, U get runaway boost creep. My stocky turbo made 10psi with only mods being FMIC and full exhaust)

Oh - and you'll find any other turbo quite laggy after the stock, especially if You've experienced full-Xzorst with stockie, 'coz MAN those Ceramic wheels spin up FAST ! ! I was seeing full boost around 3.000 RPM with the stockie, in 2nd !

Thanks mate, nicely set out for a learner like myself! Are the sliding perfromance highflows just standard highflowed turbos, if so will it be fine to just throw one right on?? Are they ball bearing?and a direct replacement item? Where can I find info on them guys.

    • Hi all,   long time listener, first time caller   i was wondering if anyone can help me identify a transistor on the climate control unit board that decided to fry itself   I've circled it in the attached photo   any help would be appreciated
    • I mean, I got two VASS engineers to refuse to cert my own coilovers stating those very laws. Appendix B makes it pretty clear what it considers 'Variable Suspension' to be. In my lived experience they can't certify something that isn't actually in the list as something that requires certification. In the VASS engineering checklist they have to complete (LS3/NCOP11) and sign on there is nothing there. All the references inside NCOP11 state that if it's variable by the driver that height needs to maintain 100mm while the car is in motion. It states the car is lowered lowering blocks and other types of things are acceptable. Dialling out a shock is about as 'user adjustable' as changing any other suspension component lol. I wanted to have it signed off to dissuade HWP and RWC testers to state the suspension is legal to avoid having this discussion with them. The real problem is that Police and RWC/Pink/Blue slip people will say it needs engineering, and the engineers will state it doesn't need engineering. It is hugely irritating when aforementioned people get all "i know the rules mate feck off" when they don't, and the actual engineers are pleasant as all hell and do know the rules. Cars failing RWC for things that aren't listed in the RWC requirements is another thing here entirely!
    • I don't. I mean, mine's not a GTR, but it is a 32 with a lot of GTR stuff on it. But regardless, I typically buy from local suppliers. Getting stuff from Japan is seldom worth the pain. Buying from RHDJapan usually ends up in the final total of your basket being about double what you thought it would be, after all the bullshit fees and such are added on.
    • The hydrocarbon component of E10 can be shittier, and is in fact, shittier, than that used in normal 91RON fuel. That's because the octane boost provided by the ethanol allows them to use stuff that doesn't make the grade without the help. The 1c/L saving typically available on E10 is going to be massively overridden by the increased consumption caused by the ethanol and the crappier HC (ie the HCs will be less dense, meaning that there will definitely be less energy per unit volume than for more dense HCs). That is one of the reasons why P98 will return better fuel consumption than 91 does, even with the ignition timing completely fixed. There is more energy per unit volume because the HCs used in 98 are higher density than in the lawnmower fuel.
    • No, I'd suggest that that is the checklist for pneumatic/hydraulic adjustable systems. I would say, based on my years of reading and complying with Australian Standards and similar regulations, that the narrow interpretation of Clause 3.2 b would be the preferred/expected/intended one, by the author, and those using the standard. Wishful thinking need not apply.
