heyas, this problem has been around for about a month now, sometimes its there for days but then the power steering comes back on occasions. Ive checked the power steering/auto fluid and its fine, the fuses have been changed recently and the problem stopped for about a day but now its back. I saw a thread on this problem awhile ago but no one seemed to have solutions, mostly theorys. Anyone have any ideas what it could be, or where the best place to go get it checked out or fixed? thanks a lot

Gauth.

Sneeza, 180SX's and Silvia's have it too you know

However it was an option which means theres also a helluva lot of 180's and Silvias out there without Hicas.

Steve as usual has generalised to the point of being incorrect. It shouldnt be removed from ALL cars asap, because for starters not all cars have it. There is nothing inherently wrong with 4WS systems its just some people dont like the feel of it, each to their own. Ive never driven my car without it so ive got no idea what its "meant" to feel like.

Unless you are having problems with your HICAS and youve got no issues with the cars handling, theres no reason at all to disable it. Besides HICAS lock kits are yellow sticker material.

R32's in particular seem to be having all the HICAS issues of late, but it might be something to do with age. Perhaps the 33's turn will be soon :)

Hope i'm not hi-jacking here, but i think my HICAS is playing up.

It seems whenever i'm turning a corner and hit a bump, the backend kind of floats to a side. Its hard to explain, but it doesn't feel good at all! Almost loosing control type of feel.

I'm going to disconnect it this weekend, and if anyones interested, will let you know the results.

Having experienced my GTR both with and without HICAS I definately prefer without.

The HICAS takes inputs from vehicle speed and steering wheel position to determine in what direction the rear wheels move and by how much.

Unlike the ATTESSA 4WD system, it doesn't take inputs from individual wheel speed nor from axial or lateral G forces.

When the car is being driven sedately or even moderately hard it does make cornering easier.

When on the limit such as track work, the HICAS system will not pick up that the rear end is sliding and will actually turn into the corner more.

I have found by locking out the HICAS that the car is more predictable when the rear has broken traction.

Each to their own I guess depending on what you plan to do with your car, however I have no plans to refit mine.

Ok, so the HICAS is causing major probs in my car.

Should unplugging the major plug that goes down to the HICAS stop it from working?

Thats what i've done, and found the orange light on the dash lights up. But i still have the problem when i go over bumps, it throws the car out a bit.

So this means that it is either still working, or something mechanical has stuffed up inside the hicas.

As i am only a recent R33 owner I no not too much about them.

From what i understand the HICAS indicator only lights up when there is a problem with the HICAS. Ie when the engine is not on.

Therefore it would also light up if you unplugged the 'major plug'.

Also the HICAS as i understand only alter +/- 1 Degree or part of.

    • For once a good news  It needed to be adjusted by that one nut and it is ok  At least something was easy But thank you very much for help. But a small issue is now(gearbox) that when the car is stationary you can hear "clinking" from gearbox so some of the bearing is 100% not that happy... It goes away once you push clutch so it is 100% gearbox. Just if you know...what that bearing could be? It sounding like "spun bearing" but it is louder.
    • Yeah, that's fine**. But the numbers you came up with are just wrong. Try it for yourself. Put in any voltage from the possible range and see what result you get. You get nonsense. ** When I say "fine", I mean, it's still shit. The very simple linear formula (slope & intercept) is shit for a sensor with a non-linear response. This is the curve, from your data above. Look at the CURVE! It's only really linear between about 30 and 90 °C. And if you used only that range to define a curve, it would be great. But you would go more and more wrong as you went to higher temps. And that is why the slope & intercept found when you use 50 and 150 as the end points is so bad halfway between those points. The real curve is a long way below the linear curve which just zips straight between the end points, like this one. You could probably use the same slope and a lower intercept, to move that straight line down, and spread the error out. But you would 5-10°C off in a lot of places. You'd need to say what temperature range you really wanted to be most right - say, 100 to 130, and plop the line closest to teh real curve in that region, which would make it quite wrong down at the lower temperatures. Let me just say that HPTuners are not being realistic in only allowing for a simple linear curve.
    • I feel I should re-iterate. The above picture is the only option available in the software and the blurb from HP Tuners I quoted earlier is the only way to add data to it and that's the description they offer as to how to figure it out. The only fields available is the blank box after (Input/ ) and the box right before = Output. Those are the only numbers that can be entered.
    • No, your formula is arse backwards. Mine is totally different to yours, and is the one I said was bang on at 50 and 150. I'll put your data into Excel (actually it already is, chart it and fit a linear fit to it, aiming to make it evenly wrong across the whole span. But not now. Other things to do first.
    • God damnit. The only option I actually have in the software is the one that is screenshotted. I am glad that I at least got it right... for those two points. Would it actually change anything if I chose/used 80C and 120C as the two points instead? My brain wants to imagine the formula put into HPtuners would be the same equation, otherwise none of this makes sense to me, unless: 1) The formula you put into VCM Scanner/HPTuners is always linear 2) The two points/input pairs are only arbitrary to choose (as the documentation implies) IF the actual scaling of the sensor is linear. then 3) If the scaling is not linear, the two points you choose matter a great deal, because the formula will draw a line between those two points only.
