Guys, FYI, i've been told (by UAS) that connecting the can as immediately above is illegal, as you have to block off the link between the head and intake manifold as well as head and inlet piping. The correct and legal way to have a catch can setup is as posted by NSA11N, with the OEM pipe linking the two rocker covers in tact. You need to have a pipe leading from the top of the right rocker cover to your catch can, and the other pipe from the catch can to the OEM piping that leads back to the intake.

This ensures the system is 'closed loop', and is the way i have mine set up. It works fine.

I'm glad some people started to actually be of some help. As stated above by govich to stay legal the catch can setup needs to remain a closed system. The other system does look pretty good though.

If you just put one hose on the left cam cover and run that to the catch can and then return the other one to the right hand side of the cover it will not do much at all. It needs to be like Govhichs setup otherwise its a waste of time.

The PCV valve is open at idle and then closes once you hit boost, it is a simple one way valve. Off boost the engine sucks air from the cam cover through the PCV valve and then into the manifold. On boost the manifold is pressurised and wants to push air back into the cam cover and the PCV valve stops it. If you don't want any unfiltered Crank case gases getting into your engine you probably need to block the pipe that goes from the cam cover to the manifold. I am not sure on the legality of this but the gases will still pass through the catch can and then go into the inlet if setup like govich.

Even if you don't block the PCV valve section then the govich setup will filter the gases and help keep your turbo, intercooler, and pipes a little cleaner.

I apologise for going over the top on the reply, after seeing a different interpretation of your second post. I read it as you saying you were blocking the oil lines to your turbo (and your MSpaint pic didnt help clarify your statement at all).

Obviously Sam took the same meaning from your post as I did:

NSA11N, restricting Oil form your turbo would be bad.

Aside from that, I still stand by my claim that you should have searched first, as its been covered a zillion times (and once again, Sam agreed).

To make a catch can setup legal, you simply run the lines from the engine to the catchcan, and then the return line back into your intake. Oil vapour doesnt harm your turbo at all, however it will coat your AFM if you return it before it (Giving false readings and thus screwing your ratios). The factory return is between the AFM and turbo.

I havent seen anyone deal with the crank cases' vapour.. On the SR20s, there is a factory catchcan placed between the crank case and rocker cover breathers (with the rocker covers' breather being a T piece; one to the catchcan, one to the intake).

When you change to a tuned length manifold, it interferes with the stock catchcan, so you just run a pipe between the crank case and rocker cover breather, and then from the rocker cover breather to the aftermarket catchcan. From there most people just drop a pipe down to atmosphere (legally you should then return it to the intake).

To Pauly33GTS-t: Please show references to where you attained that definition of a fuckhead. By what grounds do you see it just to insult someone for insulting someone? You are quite clearly "the breathing definition of a hypocrite".

I could continue to say you've made yourself out to be quite stupid, but everyone here seems to take more offense to the term "stupid" than to "fuckhead".

Sorry guys, didnt realise my setup would be illegal in australia, here in N.Z there is nothing wrong with my setup, many people use it, you could always get it setup that it return the fumes back into the intake, it would be very easy to do that.

    • It would be well worth deciding where you want to go and what you care about. Reliability of everything in a 34 drops MASSIVELY above the 300kw mark. Keeping everything going great at beyond that value will cost ten times the $. Clutches become shit, gearboxes (and engines/bottom ends) become consumable, traction becomes crap. The good news is looking legalish/actually being legal is slighly under the 300kw mark. I would make the assumption you want to ditch the stock plenum too and want to go a front facing unit of some description due to the cross flow. Do the bends on a return flow hurt? Not really. A couple of bends do make a difference but not nearly as much in a forced induction situation. Add 1psi of boost to overcome it. Nobody has ever gone and done a track session monitoring IAT then done a different session on a different intercooler and monitored IAT to see the difference here. All of the benefits here are likely in the "My engine is a forged consumable that I drive once a year because it needs a rebuild every year which takes 9 months of the year to complete" territory. It would be well worth deciding where you want to go and what you care about with this car.
    • By "reverse flow", do you mean "return flow"? Being the IC having a return pipe back behind the bumper reo, or similar? If so... I am currently making ~250 rwkW on a Neo at ~17-18 psi. With a return flow. There's nothing to indicate that it is costing me a lot of power at this level, and I would be surprised if I could not push it harder. True, I have not measured pressure drop across it or IAT changes, but the car does not seem upset about it in any way. I won't be bothering to look into it unless it starts giving trouble or doesn't respond to boost increases when I next put it on the dyno. FWIW, it was tuned with the boost controller off, so achieving ~15-16 psi on the wastegate spring alone, and it is noticeably quicker with the boost controller on and yielding a couple of extra pounds. Hence why I think it is doing OK. So, no, I would not arbitrarily say that return flows are restrictive. Yes, they are certainly restrictive if you're aiming for higher power levels. But I also think that the happy place for a street car is <300 rwkW anyway, so I'm not going to be aiming for power levels that would require me to change the inlet pipework. My car looks very stock, even though everything is different. The turbo and inlet pipes all look stock and run in the stock locations, The airbox looks stock (apart from the inlet being opened up). The turbo looks stock, because it's in the stock location, is the stock housings and can't really be seen anyway. It makes enough power to be good to drive, but won't raise eyebrows if I ever f**k up enough for the cops to lift the bonnet.
