Hi,

I'm looking at buying some Potenza RE-01R tires for my R33, so far i havn't had any luck finding someone in perth who have any in stock, or can get them for that matter. So my question is if im get a set from japan, will they be street legal in australia? and if not what will happen if the police stop me and check my tires?

Cheers Michael

if they are dot marked (which they will be) then yes they are fine in aus.

they aren't sold in aus so you wont find anyone selling them here. but shipping tyres costs a lot of dough. you will find probably more than the tyres cost themselves. probably the best option is to chose a different tyre that is available locally.

but if you reckon you know a cheap and fast way to send tyres from japan to aus then i'm all ears :D

never said it was fast lol :D shipping time looks to be 4-8weeks just need to confirm the weight of one tyre and i can see if its worth the trouble.

From my investigating price looks to be RE01R 255/40-17 between $200-$250 a tyre which compare to what i pay for my potenza G3 its pretty cheap.

Any recommendations on a tyre which will perform similar that are available locally.

Cheers Michael :(

the problem with container shipping (or consolidated cargo) is you need someone to prepare a BL for you, then you need to pay customs duty and GST and clearance cost in aus. plus with tyres you may need to have them sprayed to kill any eggs that can hide in the rubber and this can cost a bit (i know you definately do for used tyres, new ones may be exempt).

plus you need someone in japan to buy them for you and have them sent to the port.

basically I think unless you are going to buy say 40 or 50 tyres at once and fill a small container it's not worth it.

thanks for the reply beer baron, but i wont be shipping it by container, or consolidated cargo :D

Duty and GST, shouldn't be an issue as the total cost of the item will come under $1000, which is under the taxable amount, but i will have to double check to make sure it apply to tyres

ohh and i have a dude in japan to help me out :)

also: will 255 fit on a 8inch wide rim on the potenza website, it says min is 8.5inch

Sounds like you might have done this drill before?

Have considered if it would make sense to get together and get a container from TireRack in the US. Tires and wheels are much cheaper over there but shipping one set across costs a bunch. Has anyone tried that before?

lol, well enlighten me then, how will you ship them? If you know a cheap way to do it I will send myself some tyres, but I've never found an effective way to do it.

255 is far to big for an 8inch rim. 225 is the better choice for an 8.

no need to look overseas guys, I will have these tyres available in Australia within the next couple of months!!

Prices will be the same as our RE55 prices shown on our web site here:

Cheers

Slightly off topic but I don't suppose you have any of the 265/35/18 RE55's do you?

    • When you pulled it off, there is no signs of blown head gasket? Is it possible you have some other issues going on? Possible cracked blocked? Or do you think it's straight up lifting the head? Did you check what the head was torqued to before pulling it down (To see if possibly they're stretching, or starting to break threads out etc)?
    • Seems like a decent result for a modded JZX110. They are bulky in comparison to the 100 and 90 models (which I'd prefer myself) but they are getting very few and far between here in JP these days. Thanks for the detailed review and the import process into the UK. I also have a car which I'm hoping to export from Japan at some stage so it's good to know if someone from the UK was interested in it. By the way the corrosion underneath is par for the course for cars which were located in/near the mountains or along the Japan sea coastline. They get huge amounts of snow every winter and the sodium chloride is used on the roads. Many cars have some kind of rubber like treatment underneath but they tend to limit it to the wheel arches underbody and fuel tank. Suspension arms and sub-frames will have similar corrosion to your JZX110 which is a common sight. See it all the time and car dealers here generally don't even mention it unless asked.
