Do be aware with some alarms your insurance company won't cover you.

When Shopping around for insurance all alarms (bar shannons which didn't seem to care) must be an aussy approved black wire alarm with a minimun 3point immobiliser.

Definitely get an alarm with a hit/knock sensor what ever they are called. :P

I believe it was Just Cars that required a black wire alarm, minimum 3 point immobiliser and the alarm was self locking.

My alarm is all of the above + a heap more.

I always leave self locking disabled as initially I locked my self out of the car too many times. Its so easy done.

Basically what one needs as a minimum:

Black wire

3 point immobiliser

Self Arming

I also feel a hit is a must, without one what stops a theif breaking a window jumping in the drivers seat while the immobiliser is bypassed? Without it your only defence/notification of the person gaining entry to the car is if they go in through the door.

I was very lucky recently to find my car parked out the front with my old mans new Navara right next to it. The old mans Navara had the lock stuffed as some one tried to gain entry. His car has an alarm but no hit sensor; the door lock and door was manged.

They also tied what looked like speaker wire from the letter box to the tap so across the driveway.

Luckly for what ever reason the thiefs didn't even bother with my car?!?

Alarms are only usefuls in deterring 'smash and grab' style thieves that are just trying to get head units, cash, whatever they can see in your car for a hundred bucks to buy crack

for a pro thief smashing a window will usually just set off a warning beep if it does go off then it prolly takes them all of 10 sec to disable it... nobody is going to risk themselves to save your car when they hear an alarm. I dont know how but most of the cars stolen lately have had immobilisers so they have a way around them to

My opinion is you need to spend most on immobilisers and more than one kill switch, have a pager alarm like me

my 2 cents

Guy's, dont waste your money on this viper alarm, it is not an alarm but more of a gimmik/toy.

Search the Car Alarm & Audio thread for more information.

One reason:

Most alarms have NO (normally open) relays, and the when the immobilier is disarmed, it charges the relay to allow the car to start. The 791 has NC (normally closed) relays. So cut the one single power wire to the alarm module, and the 3 point immobiliser would be more useful as a paperweight.

Ive set up a car nail bomb behind the drivers seat... if the de-alarm button isnt set and someone tries to start the car without dealarming it, BOOOOM headshot. I forgot to dealarm it today........... fkn hurts, got a nail wedged behind my ear now :P

meh to car theft. insure the car for as much as possible IMO.

thats not too hard lol just get a relay thats normally open..... and pager alarms are the bomb for sure

Relays are internal to the alarm. Why stuff around with a coloured-wire alarm, trying to bring it up to standard - just buy a decent well built secure alarm to start with, with a brand name you can trust. If i was to go for a paging alarm, id definatly go GSM (sms), the RF signal ones like this viper have a range which isnt much better than line of sight.

I'll probly get something like my brother has on his car, if anything moves inside the car with the doors closed the alarm goes off, you open the doors and the alarm goes off, only thing he needs is a kill switch, but he never leaves it anywhere, only a commo so doesnt really matter anyways, these days ppl are after imports i think, but still.

I've seen one when your alarms going off for longer then acouple of minutes (open door, smashed window etc..) your phone rings - comes up saying 'car alarm ringing' or sumthing, anyone heard of these?

+ im going to put in acouple of surveillance camera's.

im thinking internal screamer is good idea even if the open door and alarm is going off to sit in car and disarm the rest of it there ears will bleed withing 30 secs

Good idea to deter them from sitting in your car ripping ur audio gear out! My last alarm installer suggested an extra internal screemer for my calais. Just make sure you tuck it away somewhere!

    • Seat of the pants assessment of the new intake: The car is way less "doughy" when hitting the loud pedal, especially off idle when stopped or in traffic, I did use a cheapo lazer thermal thingo to measure the temp around where the pod filter got its air, it was between 55 - 60°C, in saying this the car was shut off and not moving, so the OEM intake pipe was not supplying any fresh air to where the pod was when the car was at least moving A weird bonus was induction noise on the throttle in the cabin increased a bit,  I was worried that I was actually going to lose some of that induction noise I love so much, outside though, when I got the daughter to do a WOT drive by pass for me, the induction noise has increased alot when on the throttle, not quite ITB doort, but well up there I'm extremely happy with the results and have been exploring the country roads in the region  As for house mods: 1.New front fence is up and is awesome, it really upgraded how the joint looks from the street, and the added security is nice 2. Electricians have replace some interior lights, and with more lighting in the garage, a few new motion detecting lights out the front above the garage, front room, and at the front door, which I have already found heaps helpful coming and going, also now has fancy pants CCTV all round the house The only hold point for power though is the solar and batteries due to supply issues, although this will happen over the next few weeks 3. I have done a heap of landscaping out the front and I'm almost ready to do a new small retaining wall with some nice blocks to replace the brick and cemented in rocks around the raised garden beds cemented in river stone "was the fashion at the time" the house was built. I currently have a pallet of retaining wall blocks and 2 bulka bags of 20mm blue metal to replace the wood chip that is in the raised garden beds around the house 4. I now have 3 big raised garden beds for out the back to grow some vegetables, about 70cm high, 200cm long and 100cm wide 5. My 2 compost bins are already pretty full with brown, green and kitchen waste from the landscaping I'vedone so far, but they will probably take a few months to break down, so anything else that gets chopped, trimmed, and kitchen waste will just start filling the base of the raised garden beds to about 30cm before I start throwing 40cm of good compost, and stuff, for the vegetables to grow in, I'll need a few ton of compost and soil, but the local supplier can sent me bulka bags of the stuff Basically the logs, wood chips and a few strategically placed rocks for drainage, will give the beds some good organic materials down low to break down over time, and they will hold moisture during the warmer months to save the water in my big arse water tank if we don't get alot of rain So, all in all, the car and house mods are going well, and I'm really enjoying being retired, I sleep in too 0700 and slowly plod around inside until I feel like actually doing anything, and only work in the yard for as long as want, which has actually been alot over the last few weeks,  although when you look at it, it seems that not a huge amount of work has been done,  until I look at the before I started the work pics Happy days and good times indeed
    • hahaha yeah. Plan is to get side skirts and probably just rear pods. But going to do them one-by-one. I've got a set that I really like from RHDJapen, but that one isn't shipped to AU. So need to find someone who can get it for me
