I'm sure this topic has been done before, but i'm having trouble finding the info i need

i'm sure this is a common thing to do..so if anyone can offer so advise please

I have an R33 with the usual mods incl, FMIC, Wolf 3D, 3" turbo back exhaust, pod, etc.

I was looking to upgarde my standard turbo with steel wheel etc. to have relyable boost

keeping it in the standard mounting position to save on modifications

I rang a couple of places and was quoted between $1800-$2300 to upgarde internals (gt30 hybrid) on standard turbo

and $600 - $1000 for mounting (depending if the manifold needs to be removed) plus tuning

So it looks like costing around $3000 to upgrade using my standard turbo, which seems quite expensive :(

& without upgrading my injectors & fuel pump..i'll be looking @ around 230 rw/kw @

it is already making 200 rw/kw @ which is quiet adiquite for me.

does this sound about right? How have others upgarded their turbos & how much does it cost?

where is a good place to get it done? Would i be better off buying an aftermarket turbo?

will an aftermarket fit in original spot without modifying my intercooler & exhaust piping?

Hey

230rwkw on standard R33 turbo is a bit out of reach but 200rwkw is about right.

People make anything from 190rwkw - 210rwkw on standard turbo, + supporting mods. Depends on other little things, but that is a the range of power you would be looking at on about 12psi.

How much power you chasing? If its only 230rwkw then you don't need much.

This topic has been done over heaps and heaps of times, in the last week I think I have posted in 3 of them!

But again to get you start here is what you need, according to power;

190 - 210rwkw:

Stock turbo

Stock ECU

Fuel pump (Walbro/GTR/Bosch 040)

Intercooler

3" turbo back

12psi +

210rwkw +

In addition to the above list;

+ After market turbo. (high flow? http://www.gcg.com.au/)

+ Some sort of computer, weather it be stand alone (WOLF 3d which you have or a SAFC II (fuel computer)

Probably wouldnt need a stand alone ECU to get you to 230rwkw, but since you already have a WOLF you might as well use it. Gives you more options later in terms of upgrading injectors, AFM etc

But 230rwkw could be achieved on standard ECU running an SAFCII (fuel only) plus above mods..

Depending how far you go into the 2XXrwkw mark, later on injectors wouldn't hurt and a Z32.. but that will be in the mid 200rwkw mark (250rwkw+).

In terms of turbo, there is many bolt on low mount options available, on standard manifold.

HKS GT2530 - pretty sure they range from $1500 +

GT-RS is also a pretty popular turbo of choice at the moment. Not sure of price off the top of my head!

A high flow turbo should be fine, usually they can go up to 260rwkw depending on size.

GCG offer good high flows, and many members use them. Cost I think is about $1600 roughly..

If you need more info, check out this thread below, after market turbo's and members dyno results with supporting mods. This should give you an indication of what you need etc

Anyways, hope some of that helps.

That reminds me..

I was reading in the recent, if not the 2nd recent copy of HPI magazine and a article they believe 235rwkw is achievable on the standard turbo..

Require the following mods according to HPI;

3" turbo back

After market stand alone ECU (they use PFC)

Fuel pump (recommended 040)

Intercooler (GTR intercooler)

Injectors (740cc)

The above is according to HPI magazine..

I don't think it would be that reliable as which that much power the standard turbo would be close to if not out of its efficiency range and pretty close to maxing out, if not giving way..

I'd say, and I'm sure most would agree, above sort of 210-215rwkw you would want to upgrade the turbo for reliability. With a bigger turbo you would probably make the same, if not more power, on the same boost.. if not less :(

Thanks,

Abu

Thankyou for such a comprehensive answer...

i don't wan't much more power in my daily driver

i am happy with the 200kw my car is making with the standard turbo.

but will need to rebuild turbo at some stage.

i was just a little shocked at the price of a rebuild of the original with gt30 spec. internals

from yours and others recommendations

i have found a price for a HKS GT-RS with full mounting kit to be the same price as a rebuild

I know which way i'll be going now :)

Ps: The list of mods & Dyno results is very helpful too

Cheers again :(

i'd do a gcg hiflow, will achieve your power target and requires no mods to fit...

Thats the best thing about high flows, all you need is a better flowing oil feed to keep the turbo lubricated well and your set!

How much did you high flow set you back? I can see by your signature you have got some good results with it.

Thanks,

Abu

Not a problem man. Good luck with it all.

You wont be disappointed with the GTRS!! I don't think anyone has a bad thing to say about it :sorcerer:

Thanks,

Abu

    • Hi from Canada, Both of my calipers are starting to fail. My car is a 2005 M35 Stagea ARX and I can't seem to find any parts or any cross reference caliper that would fit my car. Is there a company or a similar caliper that would fit and I could replace the OEM one. Or if anyone knows where I can find a new OEM. Any help is very appreciated. Let me know!
    • Maf is a question mark but TPS  I have set at 0.47, the fact that I’m getting proper voltage range out of it with the key on leads me to believe it’s functioning properly. I’m getting proper voltages on basically everything. I still need to look up voltage ranges for z32 maf and test that
    • Honestly no not at all, but it’s a very basic tune, it’s stock injectors q45 tps and z32 maf. Other than that it’s a completely stock base map. The file is from nistune and from my understanding if it was tune related I would be able to unplug maf and tps and it would still start even if it was a really shitty start. I have tried starting it with coolant temp, maf, and tps unplugged none of those 3 togethor or individually changes anything

    • What does it look like with highway driving? And yes, I had a similar thought as Duncan. It looks quite similar in my Stagea and I have made myself accept it as normal. Might have to look into it some day   Highway gets as low as 10l/100km on my end so I'm not as worried about it being a mechanical issue. More likely just the tune on the haltech.
