Ok heres my plan. All comments most welcomed.

Im 17years old. Currently learning on a old Bluebird.

Im a huge skyline lover, but do not have the cash to buy one.

Knowing insurance for a turbo car is too pricy for my age.

I have access to a rb25de engine.

So Im looking for a skyline without an engine and some light body damages. Im wanting to do it up.

My question is should I do this? If so where would I come across a skyline without an engine. Interested in either a R32 or R33 GTS.

thanks.

Hey yeah sorry. Was thinking this might be for the wanted to buy.

I will post there also. But I still want your opinions on it. Thats why I posted here. Hope that makes sense.

Its not a Skyline, but i would have thought an NA SR20 Silvia would be a great car if you did not want to be paying too much on insurance, purchase price etc.

They have something like 110kws (slightly more then Aus SSS Pulsars) and are RWD and readily available as 5 speeds.

With light weight, adequate brakes, and tidy susp i would think they would be entertaining to drive. (im guessing about 6 to 8 grand)

Either that or be patient and wait for a car whose owner cant afford an engine repair. Only if you want to throw a RB25 into it, id look for a car with a blown RB25 to start with, there is always hidden $$$ in even the simplest of conversions.

My pleasure Col !

Xeaon,

Congratulations for choosing one of the best performing and value for money performance cars available. And welcome to SAU.

I agree that Insurance for a turbo car for you at 17 will be difficult and expensive.

You are very wise to look at a RB25DE powered car - I have driven an R33 GTS4 and they go pretty well for a N/A - Maybe consider one of these ? Alternatively if $$ are a major consideration, if you can find an R32 that needs a new motor, this would be an exellent conversion for your RB25DE - The R32s are lighter than the R33s so you will get better power to weight ratio than the RB25De in an R33.

I myself have an R33 (with an engine, but it has lost compression in 2 cylinders) hence red200ss' suggestion that I answer your question - Unfortunately my car is not for sale as I am building it up with forged pistons, gapless rings, shot peened and linished rods, possibley RB30 block, replacing the EMS ECU for Autronic or Motec, lightened flywheel, electronic boost contol, Viscous coupling diff, and many more fun mods.

You see, I have a score to settle with a certain SAU member -

B-Man (or Uncle Chop Chop to Dino .... you'll get yours)

Your muma Dino !!!! You will never chop me again (when my car is working anyway)

You will have to look long an hard to find a GTS with a blown engine. They arent very common in the first place with most imports being turbo.

You can get a RB25DE powered R32, there are a few around, this way you will either have a spare RB25DE laying around, or you can sell the spare motor to help funding.

Id expect you would pay between $10-14k for a RB25DE R32 GTS. (Can anyone confirm this im not too sure)

Very hard to say. I've never seen one for sale, not to say there aren't any out there.

Check with a workshop as to the full costs of converting as this may well make it not cost effective. A rough R33 GTS4 with a blown engine would be ideal like B-man said, but there's very few of these around with good engines anyway.

Good luck.

Like Roys said - you will be hard pushed to find an R32 or R33 for sale with no engine...

Prestige Motorsport has an N/A R32 auto 4 door for sale for approx $5700 - check out their web site - www.prestigemotorsport.com.au

Your RB25DE plus a 5 speed (maybe $1500-$2000 fitted) would be quite tidy for way under 10K.

Hope that helps.

B-Man.

If you can wait till next year, import a car under the "over 15 year import" rule. Save heaps cause you don't need to comply (I think).

Prestige sent details of 2 MR2's, one turbo and the other non turbo for under 10k.

My suggestion would be if you have 6 months to spare and a spare engine then get in contact with Prestige motorsport or J-spec Imports www.j-spec.com.au and talk to them about looking for a car with a blown motor. the seem to come up pretty regularly in Japan... might save a bundle like I did!

    • just an update to this, poor man pays twice  Tried sanding down the pulleys but it didnt do the trick. Chucked another second hand alternator in the na car which I got for free off my mate and its fixed the squelling. Must have been unlucky with the bearings.    As for my turbo car, I managed to pick up a cwc rb alternator conversion bracket + LS alternator for 250 off marketplace, looked to be in really good nick. Installed it , started the car and its not charging the battery.... ( Im not good with auto elec stuff so im not sure if this was all I needed to do but I verified such by using a multimeter on the battery when the engine was running and I was only getting 12.2v )   I had to modify the earth strap for the new LS alternator , factory earth strap was a 10mm bolt which did not fit the bolt on the LS alternator which was double the size so I cut it off , went to repco bought some ring terminals that fit, crimped it onto the old earth strap and bolted it up to the alternator , started the car and same issue. Ran like shit and was reading 12.2 at the battery.  For a "plug and play" advertised kit thats not very plug and play but alas.  My question is , am I missing something ? Ive been reading that some people recommend upgrading the stock 80 amp alternator fuse to a 140 amp but I dont see how that would stop the alternator charging especially at idle not under load.  Regardless ive pulled it out and am going to get it bench tested by an auto elec tomorrow but it would be handy to know if ive missed something silly or have done something wrong.
    • My wild guess is that you have popped off an intake pipe....check all of the hoses between the turbo and the throttle for splits or loose clamps.
    • Awesome, thanks for sharing!
    • To provide more specific help, more information is needed. What Android screen? What is its wiring diagram? Does the car's wiring have power at any required BAT and ACC wires, and is the loom's earth good?
    • So, now all you need to do is connect the 2 or 3x 12v feeds into the unit to permanent 12v, ACC 12V and IGN 12V that you can find in the spot behind the stereo, and the earth, and then it will switch on with the car.
