Hey,

Purchased a set of wheels;

235/45 17x8 +30 offset (front)

235/45 17x9 +30 offset (rear)

Decided to lower car with kyb shocks and hks springs, sitting about 340mm from centre to guard.

Wheel Alignment results;

------------------------------------

CAS

Left: +5.17

Right: +6.32

Cam

Left: -0.33

Right: -1.29

Toe

-0.8

Cam Rear

Left: -1.52

Right: -1.40

Toe

Left: +1.4

Right: +4.5

"needs castor kit & front camber kit"

"upper control bushes on both sides knocking"

Car pulls slightly to the left and they stated this is due to camber/castor. Will be fixed when kits installed and aligned.

------------------------------------

Just took car for drive, mine are scrubbing bad at front.

Any dips in the road and then you hear a creeking noise coming from the fronts.

Not sure if its scrubbing or perhaps the springs/shocks? as it seems to only come from the front right?

Anyway to prevent scrubbing without rolling? As i dont want to remove inner guard as then it will expose my SMIC?

Thanks

Patrick

Wheel alignment was done at Traction Tyres in Rowville.

The only adjustment they could do were the toe and hence why they told me to purchase camber and castor kits.

I have seen people with +30 offset and same tyres and they get no scrubbing. Maybe my springs/shocks are too soft hrmm

Might book a pedders check and/or possibly get 215's on the front if that would help..

if its only the soft plastic inner guard and you dont want to remove it, you can melt it back gradually as ive done a few times. All you need is a heat gun or decent hair dryer, and as it heats and softens up push back on it with something solid until you get enough clearance.

sounds like a good idea, although im not 100% sure where abouts the tyre is scrubbing.

The lip or the top of the inner guard.. hrm

225 on a 8 inch rim isnt stretch.

also if the tyre shop you went to can only adjust toe, tell them you want your money back. they should be able to adjust camber, castor and toe if they know how to wheel align a car.

with the sizes and specs you have the car shouldnt be scrubbing, so just get a proper wheel alignment done, and that should fix it, but if your bushes are stuffed that may be a reason

340mm from center of rim to guard is NOT low, so something is playing up. As you stated b4, get a suspension check and see what the results are.

Get the adjustment bushes and ensure no other bushes are badly worn.

I know on a 33 there is no front factory camber adjustment, but caster and toe should be adjustable. Toe, at front, should be 0, in my opinion and caster should be the same from left to right. The guys you went to obviously have no idea :thumbsup: .

had a look under the car, they are scrubbing just barely on the inner guard lining.

I think i might do the heating up and pushing back as its only a small section which is scrubbing.

I go to the same tyre mechanic as majority of racers go to. I bumped into Glenn Ridge as he was collecting his track rx7.

I have no doubts that the place doesnt know what they are doing :thumbsup:

they can't adjust anything other than F+R toe and rear camber because there is no way to change the length of the other standard arms. it doesn't matter how smart they are there is no adjustment for front camber or castor in a standard skyline. so what they did, and what they said was 100% correct. so rekin will look a tad silly asking for his money back...

as for how to fix the scrubbing the only real options are raise the car, adjust the alignment, get different offset wheels, or smaller tyres.

cheers for the clarification :thumbsup:

Went back to the tyre place and they advised me to get 235/40 profile tyres. Which will have smalller diameter than a stretched 215.

They quoted me $400 for a pair of Yokohama AVS ES100 235/40 fitted + balanced.

That will be my last resort,

Tonight im going to heat up the inner guard and push it up to see if it clears, if not ill just have to purchase the low profiles :P

Thanks

Patrick

Took a good look today and found out that its scrubbing at the end of the inner guard, just before the lip lol

So decided to use a heatgun;

dscf2851157ff3bxd8.th.jpg dscf285715f4a2dha0.th.jpg

using a peice of plastic we found to push it into place :D

dscf2852158c569ut7.th.jpgdscf285416a7936hi5.th.jpg

Melted a couple of holes oops :)

Removed majority of parts which looked like to cause scrubbing.

Test run revealed reduction in scrubbing but still scrubbed in some heavy dips in the road.

Next monday, fabricating a rectangle peice to sit inside the lip with the inner guard lining ontop. Thereby pushing the lining couple of centimeters up towards the metal

Will see how it will turn out :D

shit, i could have sworn there was a caster adjustment.

nope, the only bit on the front end that is adjustable from factory is toe. rear end has camber (not much) and toe. :D

Some calculations from this site;

http://www.bigcustomwheels.com/rt_specs.jsp

Not sure if this calculates tyre stretching values?

225/45 on 17x8

will give me 10mm extra clearance

235/40 on 17x8

will give me 24mm extra clearance

If my car was lowered 20mm and the 235/40 will give me extra 20mm clearance, would that mean that my clearance will be the same as it was before i lowered the car?

I had no scrubbing before lowering?

Should i get the 225's or the 235/40's?

Big price difference though

Thanks

Still scraping?, you have to be patient if your gonna melt it back it took me an hour to remould front 3 series bmw guards to fit 22" wheels and theres still a little scraping, if all else fails just rip out the angle grinder :P

  • 2 weeks later...

a small update;

decided to remove the inner guard lining at the top, seemed the easiest way to end my troubles :)

Majority of scrubbing has disappeared but the ocasional hard bump in the road and a dip will still cause it to scrub..

I think its scrubbing on the lip...

My question is, should i;

- Roll the lip on the guards

- Put on 225/45's

- Put on 235/40's

Im hesitant on rolling the lip because once they are rolled they cant be restored back to original? or can they?

Thanks

If you roll the guards you wont be able to restore them back to what they were, but theres really no disadvantage in doing so, the only risk you have is if the paint cracks while rolling them, but if the job is done correctly then you wont be able to tell it has been rolled.

    • Hi, is the HKS  Tower Bar still available ? negotiable ? 🤔
    • From there, it is really just test and assemble. Plug the adapter cables from the unit into the back of the screen, then the other side to the car harness. Don't forget all the other plugs too! Run the cables behind the unit and screw it back into place (4 screws) and you should now have 3 cables to run from the top screen to the android unit. I ran them along the DS of the other AV units in the gap between their backets and the console, and used some corrugated tubing on the sharp edges of the bracket so the wires were safe. Plug the centre console and lower screen in temporarily and turn the car to ACC, the AV should fire up as normal. Hold the back button for 3 sec and Android should appear on the top screen. You need to set the input to Aux for audio (more on that later). I put the unit under the AC duct in the centre console, with the wifi antenna on top of the AC duct near the shifter, the bluetooth antenna on the AC duct under the centre console The GPS unit on top of the DS to AC duct; they all seem to work OK there are are out of the way. Neat cable routing is a pain. For the drive recorder I mounted it near the rear view mirror and run the cable in the headlining, across the a pillar and then down the inside of the a pillar seal to the DS lower dash. From there it goes across and to one USB input for the unit. The second USB input is attached to the ECUtec OBD dongle and the 3rd goes to the USB bulkhead connected I added in the centre console. This is how the centre console looks "tidied" up Note I didn't install the provided speaker, didn't use the 2.5mm IPod in line or the piggyback loom for the Ipod or change any DIP switches; they seem to only be required if you need to use the Ipod input rather than the AUX input. That's it, install done, I'll follow up with a separate post on how the unit works, but in summary it retains all factory functions and inputs (so I still use my phone to the car for calls), reverse still works like factory etc.
    • Place the new daughterboard in the case and mount it using the 3 small black rivets provided, and reconnect the 3 factory ribbon cables to the new board Then, use the 3 piggyback cables from the daughterboard into the factory board on top (there are stand offs in the case to keep them apart. and remember to reconnect the antenna and rear cover fan wires. 1 screw to hold the motherboard in place. Before closing the case, make a hole in the sticker covering a hole in the case and run the cable for the android unit into the plug there. The video forgot this step, so did I, so will you probably. Then redo the 4 screws on back, 2 each top and bottom, 3 each side and put the 2 brackets back on.....all ready to go and not that tricky really.
    • Onto the android unit. You need to remove the top screen because there is a daughterboard to put inside the case. Each side vent pops out from clips; start at the bottom and carefully remove upwards (use a trim remover tool to avoid breaking anything). Then the lower screen and controls come out, 4 screws, a couple of clips (including 3 flimsy ones at the top) and 3 plugs on the rear. Then the upper screen, 4 screws and a bunch of plugs and she is out. From there, remove the mounting brackets (2 screws each), 4 screws on the rear, 2 screws top and bottom and 3 screws holding in the small plates on each side. When you remove the back cover (tight fit), watch out for the power cable for the fan, I removed it so I could put the back aside. The mainboard is held in by 1 screw in the middle, 1 aerial at the top and 3 ribbon cables. If you've ever done any laptop stuff the ribbon cables are OK to work with, just pop up the retainer and they slide out. If you are not familiar just grab a 12 year old from an iphone factory, they will know how it works The case should now look like this:
    • Switching the console was tricky. First there were 6 screws to remove, and also the little adapter loom and its screws had to come out. Also don't forget to remove the 2 screws holding the central locking receiver. Then there are 4 clips on either side....these were very tight in this case and needed careful persuading with a long flat screw driver....some force required but not enough to break them...this was probably the fiddliest part of the whole job. In my case I needed both the wiring loom and the central locking receiver module to swap across to the new one. That was it for the console, so "assembly is the reverse of disassembly"
