do u goto ur mechanics and they use a controller to advance ur timming ??

after reading the service manual it says u need a diagonists controller to update ur timming ??

so only a mechanic can do this ?

im pretty sure my 25de is running rich because the exaust (extractors hiflow cat 2.5 catbak + hotdog + supercat cannon it pops and splutters when u back off the throttle or gear change ?

is it possible to just advance the CAS anticlockwise and do it by ear until it pings ?? how safe is that ? lol because i dont know anyone who has one of these controllers

Yes.

and do it by ear until it pings

No

how safe is that

Completely unsafe

lol

:)

Go buy a timing light. :D

obviosly...

but what i was asking was since reading the service manual it doesnt mention a timming light at ALL i have one but i have no idea where to plug it into...

it says u need a diagonistics controller and u plug into the TPS and then u plug into the unit at the back of the head... and u dial in the numbers on this unit... and then u adjust the CAS accordinly...

Well the timing marks should be on the pulley at the front & bottom of the engine. There are usually six or so marks. Find out which is TDC & the number of degrees between them. This should be in the manual somewhere.

The timing light needs its induction loop clipped to the feed to the #1 spark plug. High voltage is better, but a good light will work off the low voltage feed.

You don't need half the shit Nissan say you do...

its heaps confusing hey...

well anyways heres wat i did as a little experiment... how safe or dangerous it might of been i dont care...

i marked up exactly up where the CAS was positioned it was about half / 3/4 of the way advanced... im running 100octane... so i fully advanced the cas as far as it could go... took it for a drive high revs 1st thru 2nd slowllyy holding them sorta thing not like power ON n then offf it seemd quicker i guess had more of a bark to the exaust note and made a few smoother and other weird noises n stuff...

and then i fully retarded the timming just to see how it went WOW 3000rpm n then nothing wouldnt rev as to speak... like it was struggling and the exuast was going crazyyy pop cittyy and they were the loudest pops ive ever herd come from it...

anyways also my idle has been kind of high and i can tell that the computer is always adjusting for it... so while the car was at a hot runnign temp i turned in the idle vac screw just a little bit so on my needle it sits at wat i believe is 800rpm..

as soon as u rev the engine and back off the idle falls to 1500 and then slowly dies to 1200 and then 1000 but u can tell its still revving a bit high... so i think by putting it to 800 like that it will fix it..

altho it will be interesting to see wat my cold starts will be like because it seemed from turning off n starting the car that it was struggling a little bit... maybey the ecu has to learn this ?

Lol man,

Trial and error is an expensive way to play with engines

i started the car this morning and because id adjusted my cold start it kicked over n run rough at 200rpm sorta thing.. but the ecu was fully correcting it the idle went up to 1200 slowly and then sat back down on 1000rpm n then sorta dropped a little bit more..

im guessing it will LEARN how to perfect this now ?

They did..

he just didn't mention the allen key bit :action-smiley-069:

On older cars, especially ones with dizzys, you connect the timing light onto the igntion lead that goes to the first spark plug. Our engines work off indiviual coil packs, they dont have leads. There is a special white wire in your harness near the back of your motor that you are meant to connect the timing light to, to get a correct reading.

Since this is an n/a engine, ping isnt going to be a devestating to you so even if it sounds dodge trial and error can work if you do it right. With out knowing anything about your setup, so i can be held responsible, but a rough guide would be to have the cas at around 3/4 and it should be okay. My bro runs his maxed out on his rb25de but it never pings, so see what happens.

also with the idle, the motor wont learn to adjust the idle. When you advance ignition timing the idle increases, and vice versa. There is an idle adjustment screw on the throttle body to adjust the idle correctly, once you have the right timing dialed in then adjust your timing to suit.

yeah i tryed the CAS on max went the same i think ??

my cold starts have adjusted themself so it fires up at 1000 - 800rpm.

ummm

ill go have alook for this white wire now..

wont the fuel econonmy be shit if i run around with the CAS on max ?

    • Hi...so a "development" here aswell The swap is "done" and car went "test drive" BUT it seems the clutch(maybe gearbox?) is a little bit sad? I bought this clutch kit https://justjap.com/products/xtreme-heavy-duty-organic-clutch-flywheel-kit-nissan-skyline-r31-r32-r33-push-type "Problem" is that the first gear is hard to put into and it seems that the clutch is not disengaged. It was not the problem with the old clutch...(or like sometime the first gear would not get as easy specialy when the fluid was cold) So? Can it be like...bad "install" or is the clutch wrong ((it should not have been) i done research to get the right one) Or is this "normal" with new clutch and needs to be break in?
    • @Duncan I can try  and thanks i did not thought about VIN and part numbers for 33/34. @GTSBoy yeah it looks like iam gonna do that
    • Forgot to include this but this is the mid section of my steering rack that looks like it has a thread/can be turned with that notch mentioned in the post:
    • Hey everyone, Wanted to pick some brains about this issue I'm having with rebuilding my 33 rack (PN is 49001-19U05). All of the tutorials/videos I've seen online are either R34 or S Chassis racks which seem to be pretty straightforward to disassemble but this process doesnt carry over to my rack. Few of the key differences that I've noted The pinion shaft on the other racks bolt on with 3 torx bolts: Whereas my rack bolts on with 2 allen head bolts: These changes are pretty inconsequential but the main difference is how you pull the actual rack out of the housing. The other skyline/s chassis racks can be taken out by tapping the rack out of the body with a socket and it just slides right out. I'm unable to do that with my rack because there's a hard stop at the end that doesn't let the seal/shaft be tapped out. Can also see a difference in the other end of the rack where mine has a notch that looks like you're able to use a big wrench to unthread 2 halves of the rack whereas the other racks are just kinda set in with a punch. My rack: Other racks: TLDR; Wanted to know if anyone has rebuilt this specific model of steering rack for the R33 and if there were any steps to getting it done easier or if I should just give this to a professional to get done. Sorry if this post is a bit messy, first one I've done.
    • I would just put EBC back on the "I would not use their stuff" pile and move on.
