Hey, Pretty much as the topic states. After alot of thrashing and pushing to it's limits my motor has finally decided to lose compression in one of it's cylinders. Now it's an r33 gtst with an rb25. So my delema is whether to rebuild my motor from the ground up with forged internals or save a bit of money and drop a second hand motor into it.

what do you guys think, i'm after honest advice and any help people can offer..

Also if anyone can recommend shops to get quotes from and feedback on shops who have done this type of work.

if you rebuild the motor, your going to have a nice new forged engine that will last you donkeys years. Buy a 2nd hand motor and its going to be a gamble as to how long it will last. specially if you want to go on thrashing it.

If all you want is a reliable car to drive around in and you'll give it a bootfull occasionally, then a properly-checked second hand engine would do the job perfectly well and would be cheaper too.

Depending on what's wrong with the engine you already have (it could be a blown head gasket, rings, bent valve, whatever) the third option you might not have considered is to do a repair - sort of a rebuild but without going the whole hog. Fix what's broken and get it going again, keep the stock pistons etc.

From the sounds of it though, you'll be treating it like it's been stolen so a rebuild would be the go, it'll cost you more but you know what's in it, you know it's fresh, and if you're going for bulk horsepower later on and you already have an engine capable of handling it, you're set.

Up to you really, but it depends on what you want to do with it :thumbsup:

$10,000 to get an rb26 runnin with my auto.... $7,500 approx to do rb25/30 hybrid... $6,500-$7,500 rebuild with forgies, Approx $4,000 rebuild with stocko parts, or approx $5,000 2nd hand motor

It was $10,000 for MANUAL 26...and I told you would have to learn to drive a manual :pwned:.

And my quote for the rebuild with forged pistons and 20thou overbore was $5055.

    • just an update to this, poor man pays twice  Tried sanding down the pulleys but it didnt do the trick. Chucked another second hand alternator in the na car which I got for free off my mate and its fixed the squelling. Must have been unlucky with the bearings.    As for my turbo car, I managed to pick up a cwc rb alternator conversion bracket + LS alternator for 250 off marketplace, looked to be in really good nick. Installed it , started the car and its not charging the battery.... ( Im not good with auto elec stuff so im not sure if this was all I needed to do but I verified such by using a multimeter on the battery when the engine was running and I was only getting 12.2v )   I had to modify the earth strap for the new LS alternator , factory earth strap was a 10mm bolt which did not fit the bolt on the LS alternator which was double the size so I cut it off , went to repco bought some ring terminals that fit, crimped it onto the old earth strap and bolted it up to the alternator , started the car and same issue. Ran like shit and was reading 12.2 at the battery.  For a "plug and play" advertised kit thats not very plug and play but alas.  My question is , am I missing something ? Ive been reading that some people recommend upgrading the stock 80 amp alternator fuse to a 140 amp but I dont see how that would stop the alternator charging especially at idle not under load.  Regardless ive pulled it out and am going to get it bench tested by an auto elec tomorrow but it would be handy to know if ive missed something silly or have done something wrong.   
    • My wild guess is that you have popped off an intake pipe....check all of the hoses between the turbo and the throttle for splits or loose clamps.

    • To provide more specific help, more information is needed. What Android screen? What is its wiring diagram? Does the car's wiring have power at any required BAT and ACC wires, and is the loom's earth good?
