Brisbane Importers / Japanese Exporters

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

It had to happen - I sold the R34, but now I'm getting a bit sick of the XR6 Turbo. Too big, too heavy, uses too much fuel, a little unreliable (diff bushes, random electrical things). But the main thing is it isn't much fun to drive, being an auto and all, and despite having more than enough squirt in a straight line.

So I'm thinking about an Evo VIII MR. Not a Skyline I know, but I'm on a strict regime here and whatever I buy must have 4 doors, a reasonable boot and not cost a fortune to run. My criteria are 4 doors, light weight (1400kg), less than 5 years old, and good handling.

Anyway! There are a few older theads around on importing your own vehicle without a broker, or using certain brokers, but I was just looking for comments especially from some of the Brisbane guys here on who they've used, who they heard was good, etc.

Thus far I've emailed a few people, and I'm very much keeping my options open for the moment.

Here are some companies I've come across - any comments or PMs welcome.

J-Spec imports - brokers

Site sponsors obviously.

SVi - 15 Virginia Street, Virginia - brokers

Their site seems well set out.

Direct Imported - Japan-based buyer-exporter

They replied to my email very quickly which is encouraging.

Mark Hocking / MY Trading - Japan-based buyer-exporter

Mark seems to have an excellent rep in some of the older threads.

Any others that people recommend?

From looking on carsales/carpoint, it seems you can buy an already-imported/complied VIII MR for around $41-48K, which I guess is the other option though well above my budget at this stage, and probably at least $10K over what one landed/complied actually costs....

Cheers! -- John

PS I'll be away for the next few days so pls don't stress if I don't reply... - kthx :P

got the skyline through SVi, Mick is really friendly, helpful and adds that personal touch/relationship to conversations/purchases.

he's helped me with follow ups post-sale, and gave honest opinions and helped explorered options pre-sale.

have you considered a V35 4-door?

there's the 350GT-8 which has the VQ35 engine, CVT gearbox with paddle shifts

or the 350GT with 6-speed manual

both 4 doors, leather, 206kW, 0-100 in 6sec

mix of luxury + sportiness. believe me drive one before you write it off you will be surprised at the amount of poke it has..

also has aluminium suspension and FM platform which give almost 50:50 weight distribution as the engine is mounted back in the engine bay - thus handles great. also has traction control (can be turned off)

they are 2001+ so very new and can be had for 25-35k depending on kms condition and place of purchase. cheaper if you import yourself.

i bought my V35 350GT through "import auto centre" they had some very clean cars but the customer service wasn't as good as i would have hoped since i got the car. they are very flexible on price also.

I just got my R34 through a guy called Jacques at R34 Imports - see http://www.r34imports.com

He was really good about the whole deal - no hesitation in recommending him.

When I picked up my car there were quite a few Evo's being complied......

    • Hello!  i just finished manual swaping my r34 skyline with a r33 rb20de box(RB71C)box  When the car is running it squeaks crazy loud and it was smoking from the gearbox area. The gearbox is fine it was tested. The clutch slave cylinder seems like it doesn't fully releases the clutch. I want to ask if this noise is from the throw out bearing or could it be the clutch assembly or disk att.xFliq87Gzw6kImKBVqDebXkj0fBqymk0JaYeP3_3SlM.mp4
    • A few small updates since the previous post and lessons. I decided to do a little interior light upgrade on the 110. I quite like the iilumo items, even if they're a bit of a premium over other brands. You'll also note the Stedi Fogs, that will go into the S15 fog lights as I needed to match the bulbs since I got the new ones earlier. I hope they fit as the body is quite a bit longer than your normal bulb.  Annoyingly, I managed to trip the fuse, which normally wouldn't be an issue until I located the fuse. I can't say I've ever come across this. I had lucked out that someone nearby had a spare, but oddly enough Toyota dealerships seem to keep this in stock. I ordered some to keep in my stash and as luck would have it, someone else nearby tripped the same fuse so I passed on the favour.  I also did a little service on the 110 ahead of some additional work coming up. It's been annoying that Goleby's stopped carrying this particular HKS filter for the 110, so now I need to keep them on order from Japan. I also took the opportunity to install a bash plate and number plate riser. The plate riser is such a cheap but nice fix to help really tidy up the car. I'm tempted to now also replace my headlights, on this car. Both items were from Project Aero.    I also needed to replace the rear tyres on the 110, and after trying to get it aligned learnt that I need to replace some bushes in the front end, so that's next.  Closing out this update with a nicer picture as always!
    • Yeah mate, never miss it.
    • Any going to watch World Time Attack at SMSP this year?
    • Appreciate the correction on the "ground", that will make a huge difference to looking at this. That makes complete sense about AF70/AF71 which is what I had come down to being the issue, one of these. I'll have another look in the ignition wiring when I get a chance next week. I'll also make up a jumper wire for running that AF73 test.  ECU is fine, relay itself is fine, pump harness is fine and the pump itself is fine. I am going to upgrade the Walbro 255 anyway with a DW300 I have since I need to replace the fuel sender and I'm going to upgrade the FPR with my chasebays kit ready for new plenum/injectors/dbw, but I'll get this working first. That's why this is so frustrating.
