Have you thought about the HKS 25-10 at all? I would have thought the 25-10 is to the RB20 as a 25-30 is to the RB25.

A response monster making about 200rwkw on about 1 bar of boost. With full boost by about 3500-3800rpm.

Having said that though i do know of a RB20 with a 25-30 making 240rwkw. Don't know what response is like though.

I guess the 25-30 would suit your application better but it's just a thought.

Thanks for that buddy, but the HKS2510 is far to small.

I believe its slightly larger than a standard RB25 turbo, but in a BB version with steel wheels etc?

They are only good for about 200rwkw on an RB20 as far as I know.

Maybe someone with more experience can comment?

Has been said that HKS2530 is well matched to an RB20/25, maybe HKS2535 better for an RB25 these days.

Ok...i've been in a rb20 r32 with a hks2530 making 210rwkw and its nice as responsive...i have a r32 with a hks 2535 making 215rwkw...slight power difference because i have some restrictions in my system but anyway...i wanna point out that the 2530 does feel livelier and more responsive...the rb20 is a real slug down low as it is and we can't do anything about that...personally i would recommend you go the 2530 and concentrate on the rest of the system...guys have made in excess of 220rwkw easily with the 2530 and you will get slightly better response than the 2535...i think you should go with whatever is available to you first...good luck....

hmm, glad this thread was started, because im considering upgrading my turbo for my rb20det...

but im not after any more than say 180-190rwkw...i wanted sumthin that would be a good balance of response and max power...also sumthin that isnt too expensive...so maybe a 2510 for me??

also...how much is a brand new 2510?

There was a brand new kit for sale on long ago on SAU for $900 I think it was?

I was also thinking HKS2510 would be good for your application and about 200rwkw. Would be very punch and responsive, give spool and strong power through the rev range.

Thanks for your reply mate.

Yeah also heard the same thing about both turbos, 2535 being slightly laggier than the 2530, but pulling very hard up top.

I am leaning towards the 2530 and will most likely go with that if/when I am ready and do find one. about 220rwkw should be good as I wont need to upgrade the injectors, but I will upgrade to a Z32 anyway.

I want to do a few other things now as well like 2way LSD etc, so to much power wouldn't be ideal for what I want to do.

Thanks,

Abu

I'm going to say the RB25 GCG highflow is worth looking into, and they do pop up 2nd hand every now and then.

On my very tired RB20 (blew 2 weeks later), it made 220rwkw on 1.38bar (20psi). Should've been able to squeeze a bit more power out of it, but the engine was blowing by so much oil, the tune had to be stupidly conservative to stop it pinging.

That said, it made full boost by 3700rpm (20psi). Started spooling 400rpm after RB25 turbo and then ramped onto boost at the same rate (as confirmed by the dyno sheets).

And the GT28RS is very similar to the GT2530, only a slight change to the compressor wheel if I remember correctly. Still the same size wheels as the GT2530 though. Would also be worth looking into getting one of these with the RB20/RB25 exhaust housing put onto the back of it.

Yeah I am a fan of high flows as they are straight bolt on, and look stock, which is the great thing.

I thought your results with the high flow were very good, but was a bit disappointed in its lifespan, but I guess that’s due to other things and not the quality of the turbo it self.

20psi @ 3,700rpm is good, not to laggy at all.

Is the GT28RS really of a similar size to a GT2530? I had no idea man; no one ever mentioned it before. With RB20/25 exhaust housing, when do you think it would be making full boost, and will that make the size of the GT28RS similar to a GT2530?

How much bigger is it than the 2530?

I might actually look into getting one of these, there not to expensive brand new either.

wow, 900bux isnt bad...

so is the 2510 a straight bolt on to the r32gtst? or is ther some modding required?

Is straight bolt on provided you get one in the right flange :)

Can use existing lines, but best to get a bigger oil feed so it gets sufficient oil to keep it healthy!

Dump pipe pattern is the same, so you can use the exisitng exhaust setup.

I will find you the link to the for sale thread, I am pretty sure it came with braided lines also.

I've got a 2510 & at 19psi made 208rwkw @ Boostworx in Adelaide. MASSIVE RESPONSE! just about better than stock i reckon :P

Shouldn't need a bigger oil feed cause its a ball bearing core & they don't require much oil flow as they're water cooled too. My GTRS came with a tiny oil feed restrictor......too much oil flow no good for turbo seals either..?

hey man sorry to bother you but can you give us more info what other mods do you have?

at what RPM do you get boost?

whats the car for? and are you happy with it?

Only use where it makes boost as an indicator. a bigger turbo at 8psi at 3,500rpm could be flowing similar amounts of air as a smaller turbo at at 14psi and 3,500rpm. The 2510 is no bad thing in an RB20. But i think the power ceiling of 200-210rwkws and still no real urge in the 3,000rpm range means that perhaps its a tad too small. No turbo will make an RB20 feel grunty from idle, dynamically the motor is not able to do it.

So the question is. Which car is quicker? The RB20 with GT-RS or RB20 with 2510? :P

Also, the ppl suggestign cams, has anyone got a real life personal story of cams actually helping an RB20?

full boost should be around 3200rpm but i haven't really looked - just got this 32 recently.

mods are the usual:

z32 afm

GTR injectors

PowerFC

full exhaust

cooler

Bosch 040 pump etc

I'm pretty happy with it so far - but buying a skyline with a mechanical LSD tends to do that :D

At this stage the GTS4 GTRS is quicker but that might change....GTST has a huge weight advantage....

I told Sam that you tried cams and made less power than without - he suggested that perhaps your "wrecker" motor might have reground cams without you even realising :) or are you convinced that those 'stock' cams really are stock.

Troy's "wrecker" engine is just a freak...its amazing that it still holds up with the amount of punishment it cops...if only we could all be as lucky...

Yep that motor is awesome.

That’s what you get with a good tune, as well as regular tuning, servicing and maintenance.

    • I have no hard data to report, but I have to say, having driven it to work and back all week, mostly on wet roads (and therefore mostly not able to contemplate anything too outrageous anywhere)..... it is real good. I turned the boost controller on, with duty cycle set to 10% (which may not be enough to actually increase the boost), and the start boost set to 15 psi. That should keep the gate unpressurised until at least 15 psi. And rolling at 80 in 5th, which is <2k rpm, going to WOT sees the MAP go +ve even before it crosses 2k and it has >5 psi by the time it hits 90 km/h. That's still <<2.5k rpm, so I think it's actually doing really well. Because of all the not-quite-ideal things that have been in place since the turbo first went on, it felt laggy. It's actually not. The response appears to be as good as you could hope for with a highflow.
    • Or just put in a 1JZ, and sell me the NEO head 😎
    • Oh, it's been done. You just run a wire out there and back. But they have been known to do coolant temp sensors, MAP sensors, etc. They're not silly (at Regency Park) and know what's what with all the different cars.
    • Please ignore I found the right way of installing it thanks
    • There are advantages, and disadvantages to remapping the factory.   The factory runs billions of different maps, to account for sooooo many variables, especially when you bring in things like constantly variable cams etc. By remapping all those maps appropriately, you can get the car to drive so damn nicely, and very much so like it does from the factory. This means it can utilise a LOT of weird things in the maps, to alter how it drives in situations like cruise on a freeway, and how that will get your fuel economy right down.   I haven't seen an aftermarket ECU that truly has THAT MANY adjustable parameters. EG, the VAG ECUs are somewhere around 2,000 different tables for it to work out what to do at any one point in time. So for a vehicle being daily driven etc, I see this as a great advantage, but it does mean spending a bit more time, and with a tuner who really knows that ECU.   On the flip side, an aftermarket ECU, in something like a weekender, or a proper race car, torque based tuning IMO doesn't make that much sense. In those scenarios you're not out there hunting down stuff like "the best way to minimise fuel usage at minor power so that we can go from 8L/100km to 7.3L/100km. You're more worried about it being ready to make as much freaking power as possible when you step back on the loud pedal as you come out of turn 2, not waiting the extra 100ms for all the cams to adjust etc. So in this scenario, realistically you tune the motor to make power, based on the load. People will then play with things like throttle response, and drive by wire mapping to get it more "driveable".   Funnily enough, I was watching something Finnegans Garage, and he has a huge blown Hemi in a 9 second 1955 Chev that is road registered. To make it more driveable on the road recently, they started testing blocking up the intake with kids footballs, to effectively reduce air flow when they're on the road, and make the throttle less touchy and more driveable. Plus some other weird shit the yankee aftermarket ECUs do. Made me think of Kinks R34...
