hey all,

its come time to do the whole clutch thing, ive burnt the stock one a few times, and even though it is not slipping, it feels like crap.

so i have two options at the moment, and i am stuck with which one to go with.

1st option is the organic clutch ($350)

2nd option heavy duty ceramic button clutch ($600)

i know there is only a 300 dollar difference, but my mum is lending me 1000 to do this, which i will be paying back of course!!!!!!, so i would prefer to keep within that limit, which would mean i can get the organic clutch/flywheel/labour. for $1050 or go with the h/duty clutch for 1300.

keep in mind i will be getting a chrome moly lightened flywheel with which ever way i go.

i just wanted your opinions, and what kind of clutch you guys use, what they are like, etc

keep in mind that my R34 GT is my daily driver, so i need the give in the clutch, i am not afraid to drive the car hard, but tend to drive like a granny a majority of the time :D as she is also my weekend show car .

so what do u think? please help! as i cant make up my mind!!!

no brainer really... just go with the organic.

with the flywheel that's already going to hinder daily driving, the button will be a bitch - along with the fact that if you're not doing track work and pushing large amounts of power - not to mention you're in your budget range.

just to put a bit of perspective, i use a stock GTR clutch - has served me fine for over 10 skidpan days, 5+ track days (this year) plus daily driving.

Yip.. as above, button clutches are a B***H in traffic.. and very on/off. It makes for very uncomfortable driving and very unsmooth.

Unless your planning for a REAL big power increase in the future. Dont bother. It will be FAR too much pain for what its woth. Especially if your coupling with a lightened flywheel. How light? I know below a certain weight, lightened flywheels are quite hard to get off the line quickly. Couple this with a brass button and you setting yourself up for high blood pressure.

I have an exedy clutch.. its AWESOME!.. Dumped it a few times with absolutely no slippage. Theres a good feel. Not heavy at all but enough to know when its in or out. I baught mine for ~$280 for the full package of pressure plate, clutch plate and bearing.

Please keep us posted. Im curious how a lightened flywheel stacks up to a stock one.

i've heard of people who are happy with exedys and others who aren't it seems 50/50 though - so i suspect it's more to do with installation than anything. i'd definitely give it a go.

$300 is too exxy for a 5.2kg flywheel, considering the freight costs to send it over here. you can pick up a chrome molly or a billet one from any of the local (or interstate) performance shops for about the same - you'll win on freight though.

i'll be chasing a 4.8kg one in a few months time - fingers crossed, and possibly get jim berry to build be a clutch suited to it. either way, i still don't see the point of a lightened flywheel unless it's for some form of motorsport.

the lightened flywheel is about 5 something kg's. nearly half of the weight of a stock flywheel.

because i will be doing the go to whoa again when it comes up, you need to get a really good launch of the line, so i figured, why not!

it will be interesting to see what happens with the flywheel, i do know that the revs will have to be increased a little to make it easier for general driving, so the car dosent stall at the lights.

i should hopefully be getting it done in the next couple of weeks, so i will let you all know what the end result is :wave:

another vote for organic (thats the way i went) an exedy rb25det organic will happily handle anything you'll throw at it

but mainly because, you said you wanted a bit of give, meaning you want to slip/ride it on occasion??? for smooth take offs etc you need to ride clutches, if you got something like a button, if you were to ride it, they shred really easily (since theres not much friction area) so for smooth daily driving it possibly wouldn't last too long at all. A button would more be suited to a track/drift/high powered car.

ill be going with an Xtreme Clutch and not Exedy, as i have found that Exedy are a fair amount more than the Xtreme Clutches (as in 200-300 more, and thats for an organic clutch too).

and i did ride the clutch a little bit at gazzanats during the go to whoa, and it held up ok (i had burnt the clutch before gazzanats, and was worried that it was gonna shite it self on me...........but took the risk neways LOL)

Skit did you do the flywheel when u did your clutch at all???

You really do not need a lightened flywheel. For a street car, the stock flywheel is better.

Get onto Kudos Motorsport for an Exedy clutch. From my experience, Exedy shit all over Extreme for drivability.

has anyone put in a lightened flywheel???

I know this is a bit of an old thread, but I've finially got my $h*t together and had my new organic clutch and 4.8kg flywheel installed. I haven't noticed any adverse effects to driveability, it's a dream to drive now and so much more responsive in the low gears, although I don't know if I'm imagining things but there seems to be a flat spot higher up in the rev range. Anyway can't wait to get it onto the track and give it a real good work out. :blink:

    • I was using the wiring diagram I have So 12.74V is coming into the rear Fuel Pump relay as I measured.  When I turn the key to ON im getting 0.6V to the Fuel Pump plug; which i assume is backfeed voltage and doesnt include the 12V from ignition power.  The rear relay is working and being triggered.  From the diagram I clearly see the rear relay 80 = Rear Relay going into the Body/H loom (R-27) 27 = Fuel Pump plug going into the Body/H loom (T-20) 40 = Short Connector (R-27) I'm reading 12.74V on the blue/black wire which is the power for the Fuel Pump   From this diagram I can see the Ignition relay goes into the front and up to the ignition  2 = Fuel Pump Relay <1M> (R-27) 37 = ING Relay <1M> I started from the pump using this reference Which the way I read it (referencing Nissan wiring color codes) is: Pin Wire Color Function 1 B/P (Black/Pink) Ground 2 L/W (Blue/White)        ECU Trigger 3 SB (Sky Blue) Fuel Pump 5 L/B (Blue/Black) 12V Constant Tested SB to SB on Fuel Pump for continuity - confirmed Tested negative on Fuel Pump to 12V battery and L/B - confirmed 12V Pulled the relay putting 12V between Pin 1 & 2 and testing continuity on Pin 3 & 4 - confirmed relay   So that has me looking at this part of the circuit to understand whats happening here...and im still confused. From best I can tell; the disconnect is back to my previous diagram; between Ignition Relay and Fuel Pump Relay...which yet again; afaik is where the immobiliser should.    Thats what I was trying to explain to GTSboy; im not trying to fix it myself; yet I seem to have to get a Masters in Electrical Engineering (while im busy doing my actual job of DevOps & Cloud Engineering) somehow.  I just wanted more expert opinions; or more so that what I tested is correct and proves it to something around that area; to go back to the alarm tech (for a 3rd time) that he needs to fix it. He keeps telling me its not the alarm. He lives on the complete other side of the city so i understand not wanting to make a trip but as I said before if its the alarm it should be up to him to fix it. But he's adament its not; even though I pointed out the FP was immobilised through the original alarm. To my mind; it seems that the ECU is sending the signal; but the ignition is not getting 12V down the line.       
    • Maybe also really stiffly sprung track cars. Get the inside wheel up in a corner and all the fun stops. Also me sometimes (rarely) when I have to stand on the brake to convince the diff to drive the wheel that is still on the ground when I'm trying to diagonally get over severe driveway entrance, etc.
    • I feel like I'm missing something. You had an authorised installer come out and install a new alarm. Post install the car doesn't start, and you aren't getting the installer back to fix what they did wrong?
    • So either way it is gearbox out and look what is wrong?  I know about the input shaft bearing. Even before swap/new clutch the it sounded exactly like this: So is that inout shaft bearing or the other was installed backwards?  And can some please tell me the part number for that input shaft bearing? The gearbox is small box from R34 N/A and number is FS5W71C. Thank you  
    • I am yet to see anyone ever regret a quaife or helical. ...other than drifting/skidpan duties. I kind of want to upgrade my factory helical with a Quaife (but really it's not ultimately that different, and is a MASSIVE UNDERTAKING), that's how good the hype is about them, that I want to try them 'just to see'
