Hey guys im about to get my car tinted, Ive found a place that does 3 shades that are "Darker" then legal, they told me this in warning. What i want to know is if i get one of these what are the chances on being picked up. From looking at the darkest they carry on a car yes its really dark but you can still see though it. What would you guys do?

If its illegal, then its illegal....chances are you either get picked up at a defect station with a light gun, which calculates how much % light penetrates ur windows or....Insurance will void ur policy in the event of an accident. If you're willing to risk it like most people do...then its a risk you have to take.

if you go darker don't be stupid and go really really dark just go a fraction darker . You will regret it a night. I tinted mine with 20 on the rears and yeah its ordinary to see at night. The amount of people that ask me for illegal tint is far greater than that who want legal. Definately keep it legal on the front doors , more for saftey than anything else

They make laws to benefit us, the citizens = 10%

They make laws to benefit themselves with ridiculous fines = 90%

Prolly closer to:

They make laws to benefit us, the citizens = 10%

They make laws to benefit themselves with ridiculous fines = 50%

They make laws to benefit lobbyists (desalination plant types who will employ them when they retire) =30%

They make laws to amuse themselves with their power = 10%

theres no such thing as factory tint . Theres no tint the colour is in the glass and is t20 , and by any measure of the DOT should be illegal. Its one rule for the av joe and another for big buisness. I always get people in wanting the same on theres but its illegal if i do. Figure that out

I could be completely wrong, but I always thought privacy glass was legal because it doesn't affect your forward or peripheral vision while driving, or something like that? Otherwise things like vans with no rear glass or trucks with trailers etc would be screwed, and so would nearly every limo I've seen. As long as your windscreen is untinted and the side windows on the front doors are >= T35 then you're fine... or is that not the case? Are they just exceptions to the rule?

Either way I've always gone T35 all round for the usual visibility at night reasons and because I prefer the look of the glass being the same tint all round, rather than different shades front and rear

yea go legal, ive been defected for tint before (in my first car not the liner). i had 5% all the way round and i hated driving in the rain at night cos with the windows up i could see sweet fa apart from headlights.the line came with tint on it wen i bought it, im pretty sure the front windows are lighter than the back but its only noticible wen the suns shining on the car and the windows are up. its the way to go.

So the main points as i see it;

Pro;

* Looks good (some may think so, some may not, beauty is in the eye on the beholder)

Con;

* Insurance can wipe your policy if you claim and they find out (which they probablly will)

* De-fective car (Could cause you to get fines and loose points)

* Un-roadworthy (Hence when you go to sell the car you will not get a roadworthy and have to strip the tint)

* Can be very dangerous at night (If you put T5 on your car you are not going to see much at all and you increase your chances of having an accident)

* Hard to wear glasses (I mean your looking out the side glass with sunny's on and you will be like double tinted and you will see very little, so take you sunny's off and not only do you look un-fashionable but then you need them back on again once you look out the front window. My point being it would be hard on your eyes during the day)

Question tho;

Why do you want to put darker than legal tint on your car???

Cause if its privacy your after talk to tint mart they have a new film called "Infinity Carbon" and its semi reflective and its almost impossible to see in the car during the day due to the reflection, then at night the shade of the tint offers you privacy. Best bit about this new tint is from the inside of the car is looks barelly tinted. I just had this put on the SS a few weeks ago and I could not be happier.

As it gives me the best of both worlds, good privacy, looks great outside the car, reduces heat and UV inside the car (Ive had many burnt arms on the highway) and at night its very easy to see out of the car. Plus you get a great warranty on these films, they do darker than legal but they dont offer any warranty on those films.

that's exactly right, they are the exception to the rule. why are you allowed t20 privacy glass and not allowed to tint your windows in t20 . I get my tint of tint mart and i'm umm-in and arr-in about getting a roll of that platinum stuff. You reckon it was that good Col-GTSX ? Got a pic ?

    • Had a go at the stuck crush tube this afternoon. Tried things like grips and a chain wrench first but wouldn't just twist straight off. So got to work with a drill. Started small and kept a depth stop on to make sure I didn't drill into the bolt. Made a line of drill holes all the way up and enlarged them. Then a combination of chisel and Dremel to split it all the way up. Levered the split to get oil in there and eventually it gave a bit while levering. Worked it back and forth with loads more oil till it was spinning freely, then with grips I could work it downwards and off. And no significant damage to the bolt (not by me anyway - just the 27 years of rust)
    • Well, I'm tired. I'm tired because about 4PM yesterday, before today's appointment someone immediately bought my bumper. They couldn't get it any other day as they're on the way back to NSW. So I had to do that big GTR conversion I had been planning. Unfortunately, the information on SAU about what you need and how this is done is incomplete. So what should be a simple bolt on affair, yeah, it's not. Did you know if you use all GTR items the bonnet won't close? This little manuever sent me into about 1am the night before trying to dodge a way to get it closed. I will have to revisit this in the next few days  - or maybe not, I may let a body shop figure it out. It all needs to come up and my motivation to pull the bumper off is low. It also seems to hit things in the bay where the GTT bonnet didn't. Yes I used 100% new OEM GTR items. Today, I had the joy of driving to the dyno looking like this: Given I had roughed in the fuel and given sensible but pretty conservative timing, I didn't really bet on having the car drive out any real difference than when it drove in. Sadly due to a miscommunication and laptop fun and games (and almost bricking the dongle, prayers and firmware updates indeed), I ended up using HP Tuner credits to licence the car that was already licenced. So in the end my laptop was used. It turns out my butt dyno is still well calibrated after all this time. The 325kw was on 74% Ethanol, the 313kw line was on 98. The other line is the 'before' line which was 281kw. While the numbers are pretty low, they're pretty in line with what you'd expect. Even if US dynos bump the whole result up about 50KW, gaining 10-15% is similar gains.  The curve of the cam is pretty much spot on with what was discussed as well. All this said, it still feels bad to not see the number you secretly want to see. Even if the car drove great beforehand, and I knew pretty confidently the car would drive out much the same way it drove in due to the nature of a wellish dialled in LS1 not gaining much if anything at all from being tuned from where it was. As expected, the car isn't particularly sensitive to running it at anywhere between 12.0 and 13.0 - And the initial timing at 20deg and 12.0 made 308KW. So 3 degrees of timing, and leaning it out to 12.7 for 5kw, anything above stopped giving any benefit until E85 (which has an additional 2 deg as before). Car itself behaved entirely fine. I found out that 100C = 1.15V! IAT at about 7pm was 19C. I might mess with the bonnet mounting.. but given the REO NEEDS TO BE CHOPPED TO FIT A GTR BAR this is possibly something I may leave gathering (more) dust until it returns to paint jail.
