Hey all was doing some work under the car and had a play around with the tailshaft and this mount

im getting say 1-2cm movement in whatever direction

is this acceptable ? it doesnt look to be worn out

Also is that where the centre bearing is or not? 1st RWD car so im sort of noob with diffs and tailshaft lingo

I get some vibrations through the floor especially in fifth say on the freeway its sort of a continuous light grinding noise thats one for 1 sec off for 1 sec hard to explain but sounds driveline related

any comments appreciated

yeah thats the centre bearing and a cm or 2 movement is OK. mine was shot but moved around a fair bit, also created a nasty clunk. there are 2 other joins in the tailshaft to check as well, front (uni) and rear (cv). also could be worn gearbox mount, worn subframe bushes or any of the rear control arm bushes (there are about 10 bushes back there)

Hey duncan / others (sorry to dredge up an old thread and hijack it), I have an issue that may be related to this - my car for some time now has seemed very clunky when changing gears - it has now started making a noise that could be described as chattering or kinda a muffled grinding noise when bringing the clutch out and putting power down - it is fine once the clutch is all the way out however.

I think that the tailshaft centre bearing is rooted. Would you aggree? I also think it has created other problems which is what is causing the noise. I dont know however what it has rooted to make this noise and am after opinions. I initially thought the spigot might be gone, but there is no noise while the clutch is all the way in / out or the gearbox is out of gear? could it be the throwout / thrust bearing?

Cheers

Ian

Yeah sounds more like the thrust bearing to me, they are generally noisy when foot is off the clutch but quiet when foot is on clutch. You really need to change thrust bearing every time you do the clutch

I think it was changed, but the rooted tailshaft centre bearing has caused it to fark itself.

It doesnt seem to make noise when the foot is off the clutch tho... more like when its half way up the travel of the pedal (engagement point) but not all the way off and its in gear / under load.

i should make a recording of it.

    • Man, I'm kind of amazed that the price of the turbo has not changed in 7 years. Everything else is inflating beyond reason, but not this? Good on Tao / hypergear I guess? Anyways, good luck with the sale!
    • I'm selling my brand new, in the box, never used Hypergear ATR45 - and I had some additions I paid for a few yrs back when I purchased it. Never ended up having the rest of the money to add all the mods at once, so I just ended up slowly selling each part. I originally had it internally gated, with the dump pipe, however I found it was incompatible with what I was going to use it for, so I contacted (I think Ken) from Hypergear, and he and I messaged back and forth & he got me to ship the turbo back, where they modified it & made it externally gated, and gave me the 5 bolt dump pipe attachment for custom welding. (Photos below) This turbo like I said has never touched the inside of an engine bay, it's completely brand new, never used, been sitting in the same box it arrived in, covered in plastic & all. Below are the photos of it: And while the guys at Hypergear were making it in-shop, they sent me some photos of the process: I'm looking at selling this just because I'm in need of the money right now, and don't have plans on modifying the 34 anytime soon - and from reviews & peformance sheets, this turbo had amazing results back when I was researching. The turbo was purchased in 2018 for $1.9k, with the mods I got added on. Looking at the website now, for the same turbo they sell (ATR45SAT), with the current addons it adds up to $1830 for the turbo Current addons included: - Bolted dump adaptor - Ball bearing CHRA - Braided oil feeding line So I'm looking to possibly sell it for around $1800, with shipping included in that 1.8k, It cost me around $120 to ship - so yeah thought I'd throw it out there and see if anyone was interested in purchasing. Cheers!
