Hey guys,

Has anyone ever cryo treated a rb20 gearbox to strengthen the gears? I have a spare box sitting on the garage floor which might be a good candidate for cryo treating...i know it will never be as strong as a rb25 box but at less than half the price i was wondering if it would be a feasible idea...i was looking to use the box behind a worked rb20 or maybe a mild tuned rb25 in the future...a rb25 box would be at least $1000 and if i'm not mistaken i'd be able to cryo treat the gears and shaft in the rb20 box for less than $500...what do you guys think?

As there is no real point in 'just' doing the gears (ie, full overhaul if your pulling it apart)

By the time you strip the box, put it together... with new everything, it'll probably be much more than $500.

Also time is money... RB25 boxes go in easily, so time saved can be money earnt.

The idea is good and the price not too bad, i just thing overall the price would be more than that once you check it out and get into it more

Thanks for ya input Nismoid...it was just an idea...if it was going to cost more than $600 or so all up then perhaps not...although with a 25 box in my 32 i'd have to sort out the tailshaft and then theres the minor issue of the speedo too which would add to cost...there might be other things to sort out too but i'm not sure...any more feedback would be appreciated...cheers...

I cryo'd our GTR box...lasted 3 years of thrashing...broke it flat shifting out of turn 9 at eastern creek...lol

From my experiences & what i've heard & read the gears arn't the real problem unless you have upwards of 250rwkw, its the bearings which f**k out & then allow the gears to move apart putting the load on the tips of the gears instead of where the meat of the gear is. My recommendation would be to do one of three things, freshen up your spare box with new bearings & whatever else needs replacing, fit a RB25DET box as other people recommend or what i've been thinking of trying which is to see if there are tapered roller bearings available in the correct sizes as they will take the load & rpms better (the ball bearing style as fitted are only designed to operate at 3,000-4,000rpm) but this will require a lot of work as you will need to source/fabricate shims to preload the tapered rollers (altough you may not be able to)

    • Yea - I mean I've seen my fuel pump which is decades old and uh, while I'm not saying this with real knowledge... but I sure get the ick at using anything in the fuel system that produced the state of that pump. Many years ago I went through multiple pumps (and strainers) before I dropped the tank to clean it out with extreme violence. I'm talking the car would do maybe 50km before coming to a halt, which resulted in me cleaning out the filter with some brake cleaner and going on my way. None of my stuff ever looked like what came out of your fuel tank. I don't think I'd be happy with it unless every single component was replaced (or at least checked/cleaned/confirmed to be clean here).
    • I'm not going to recommend an EBC pad. I don't like them. Just about anything else would suit me better. I've been using Intima pads for a while now.
    • Agreed, and in particular the earth strap that should go from the subframe to the chassis but it often broken or left off. There is a section in the R32 workshop manual you can follow for troubleshooting if you don't see anything suspicious, and depending where you are (there is no location on your user profile) you should be able to get your hands on a second hand replacement unit still if needed
    • Yeah they mention as a R34 for 2.5 Turbo...but then again thos "small" were also for R34 by that different site. But i look into it and that 310mm EBC is for R34 GTT. And by those you linked the specs are the same 🙂    EDIT: I found these on one site here: DBA 4000 series T3 DBA42304S They are 310mm...and it says are for R34GTT...are there good? EDIT2: ok they have pads too.  What "color" should i get for street use? I dont want/need some noisy ones...(and if they are not that dusty that is good too)
    • Yeah, shame. Maybe  driver's carpet is available 🙏. I am waiting for both amayama and nangun to confirm.
