Hi All,

Decided to do a radiator flush on the weekend, used rad flush, went for a drive, then yes to my surprise something had to f up on my RB20DET.

At first I thought it was the heater hose, but it turns out its not... its leaking near the starter motor but I could not see properly so I resorted to my camera phone.

When I re-filled the radiator, and put the car on jack stands I could see it leaking towards the firewall but I still couldn't see the source.

Could someone help me identify the leak? I hope it is as simple as a welsch plug, but regardless I still have to remove the plenum to do any work, there's absolutely no space in my engine bay (RB -> S13).

Many Thanks Guys and Girls!

I need her ready for the OzMazda motorkhana!!

More Info:

Leak seems to be coming from rear driver's side of motor. It seems to be dripping from above the starter motor, from the phone photos, it seems that the hoses are not blown or leaking but you can see there's previous water/coolant marks on the block somewhere..

Could someone provide me with all the welsch plug locations? Even a diagram? would be sexy if you could!

Frankly, I can't see anything useful from the photos. But I still have my money on a hose. If the engine came straight from Japan, then it's more than likely the hoses have rotted from the inside, due to a lack of inhibitor (not a favoured additive by the Japanese motorist).

You need to get the system under presure so it leaks. Either have the engine running, or get it to a mechanic or radiator place and have the cooling system pressure tested.

Welsh plug map won't be much use, because you need to remove manifolds to fix anyway. And you are better off replacing them all at the same time.

I know those photos are crap, but there's literally no room to see anything.. All I could see under the car when it was on jack stands was water pouring down from the starter motor.

Well regardless, I'm planning to take off the plenum tonight, only way I can think of to reach the leak area.

last night's progress... looking good, removed plenum, intake manifold to reach the leak.

Turns out it was the 8mm hose underneath the 2 heater hoses. It's situation between the firewall and the block.

Got a mate to grab generic reinforced 8mm hose to replace all of the hoses, even the good ones.. Going to prevent this from happening again!

    • You Gregged a whole racetrack!?
    • Look for broken wire or bad connector at the motor. Might not be it, but is worth starting there, as it is easy.
    • Hi everyone, I’m having an issue with my R32 GT-R. Sometimes, when the car goes over a bump or experiences some vibration, the 4WD warning light comes on the dashboard. When I check the code from the control unit in the trunk, it shows Code 19 – ETS Motor. However, everything seems to be working fine — if I turn off the engine and restart the car, the light goes away and everything functions normally. Has anyone experienced this before? Where should I start troubleshooting this issue? Thanks in advance!
    • I'm back from the dyno - again! I went looking for someone who knew LS's and had a roller dyno, to see how it shaped up compared to everything else and confirm the powerband really is peaking where Mr Mamo says it should. TLDR: The dyno result I got this time definitely had the shape of how it feels on the road and finally 'makes sense'. Also we had a bit more time to play with timing on the dyno, it turns out the common practice in LS is to lower the timing around peak torque and restore it to max after. So given a car was on the dyno and mostly dialled in already, it was time for tweaking. Luis at APS is definitely knowledgable when it came to this and had overlays ready to go and was happy to share. If you map out your cylinder airmass you start seeing graphs that look a LOT like the engine's torque curve. The good thing also is if you map out your timing curve when you're avoiding knock... this curve very much looks like the inverse of the airmass curve. The result? Well it's another 10.7kw/14hp kw from where I drove it in at. Pretty much everywhere, too. As to how much this car actually makes in Hub Dyno numbers, American Dyno numbers, or Mainline dyno numbers, I say I don't know and it's gone up ~25kw since I started tinkering lol. It IS interesting how the shorter ratio gears I have aren't scaled right on this dyno - 6840RPM is 199KMH, not 175KMH. I have also seen other printouts here with cars with less mods at much higher "kmh" for their RPM due Commodores having 3.45's or longer (!) rear diff ratios maxing out 4th gear which is the 1:1 gear on the T56. Does this matter? No, not really. The real answer is go to the strip and see what it traps, but: I guess I should have gone last Sunday...
