I am all set to put a RB25 turbo, Walbro fuel pump, Turbotech Boost Controller and a Apexi SAFC 2 aiming for 180kw-200kw.

Ive rang a place that was recommended here, and they say that with my piggyback ecu, there will not be much power gains as the ecu will reach boost cut and theres no way this can be removed with the SAFC. This is because the r33 turbo, flowing more air, will reach boost cut at lower boost pressure as opposed to the r32 turbo reach boost cut at higher boost, which makes not much difference in power.

Could someone clear this up as im fairly confused after reading so many threads stating otherwise.

SAFC = AFM Signal Bender.

It tricks the ECU into thinking there's less air coming in then there actually is. I'm sure you knew that already though.

There is no feasible reason why they can't tune it with the safc.

They either:

A) are idiots, or are unaware what a safc does

or

B)don't want your business

Otherwise try and tell them it can be done.

be prepared for a big bill....

ye, they said if there isnt any dramas with the swap, that is bolts seized and what not, then it should be ~$250 for the swap, and ~$200 for the tune by Jim. So fair pricing i say

$450.. lol..

let us know when it's done.

I would like to see dyno printout and paid invoice.

should be interesting to see which one has a higher curve.

LOL!!!

that's an extremely cheap price for a turbo swap and tune. maybe if they have done it a million times then they can do it that quickly? i hope so for your sake! definately let us know what they end up charging you, my brother wants to pay someone to do this for him, and he wont pay me...

hmm, wat is the more realistic price? Im willing to pay the average price, just dont want to pay above average. Ive called some more work shops, and the average seems to be the 400 mark for the turbo swap, 200 for SAFC tune

I'm sure CRD will do an outstanding job and will not make a mistake.

what I am saying is that they are a very well known workshop with great experience and are pretty much famous for what they do.

this sort of creditation does not come cheap.

if he said $250 to replace turbo and $200 for tune, then I hope that he keeps that.

If I were you, I would do the following before going there for this work.

Oil and oil filter change.

air filter change/clean

new copper spark plugs set to 0.8mm gap (search these forums for part number you need to buy)

tape up your coil packs (search forum for this too)

Also, going by your first post...

I am all set to put a RB25 turbo, Walbro fuel pump, Turbotech Boost Controller and a Apexi SAFC 2 aiming for 180kw-200kw

I will assume that all these items will need to be fitted/installed/set?

you will be charged extra for time to install all of these.

and parts like clamp for the walbro pump, vacuum lines for the boost controller, the nipple that needs to be tapped in to your Intercooler piping for the boost controller to be used with the RB25 turbo.

also, if you don't have the elbow pipe (first part of the intercooler piping bolted to the turbo) from the RB25, then they will charge you for modifying the stock one to fit.

There have been no mention of gaskets in your posts and I doubt that CRD will use the gaskets that are on your car now as they may leak and you will complain to them so to prevent this, they will get new manifold to turbo and turbo to dump pipe gaskets (about $35)

Bolts/studs that will snap = $?? not much.

time taken to drill out the broken studs = $?? not much

cost of new stainless studs, bolts, and those little washer type clamps that hold the bolts in place = $?? not much.

If you can, I would seriously ask for the quote for all of the above in writing.

Also, I'm surprised that CRD took on this job as it is a VERY small job compared to what they are known for.

I can assure you that all of the wrench work above will be done by an apprentice and the tuning of the safc will be Jim.

I suggest you have alot more than $450 with you or set aside when you go to pay.

I hope for your sake that you walk out with 180rwkw and $450 lighter, but I doubt it all very much... on both the power and $'s.

Thanks for the detailed response GTST, appreciate it.

I will be able to install the safc. Nipple has been attached to the elbow, so thats ready to go. Walbro pump will be installed by them too for $100 they said. Gaskets, bolts, vacuum hoses im willing to pay as install cant be done without them. Im prepared for the extra couple hundred dollars it may cost.

CRD have agreed to replace the turbo and pump while i wait, and then bring it in the next day for a tune. So im very happy that they have let me do this, coz i want to be aprt of the whole tuning atmosphere and that.

So u rekon 180kw is not acheiveable with the mods i have?

SAFC does not adjust timing so no. I don't think that you will get 180rwkw with an RB25 turbo and SAFC tune.

also, don't forget the oil and plug change.

they WILL make you do this on the day and they WILL supply and fit Iridium plugs which are about $22 - $25 each.

times 6 = another $150.

oil and filter + labour will charge you over $100 for that too.

When you booked in for?

4th of March, i already have Iridiums and Oil change is coming up, so that will be done next week. I think my plugs need to be regapped though to .8mm as i get some hesitation at 5000+rpm

Ive currently got full 3" Xforce exhaust, fmic, catco cat and Apexi Pod
