If u want to respray a car a different color, how far do you have to sand down the existing paint?

Some people have told me just sand it till the clear coat and pearl is gone.

Some ppl have said sand till the paint isn't shiny

Any then some spray guy, who i think is just trying to make more money, says u need to sand all the way down so u can primer bear metal.

What is true or what is shit? Any done a repsray be4?

well if u want a proper respray u sand down to bare metal but u can get a way with just sanding down till u cut into the original paint. all comes down to how much ur willing to spend and how fussed u are about things...have fun!! wat colour are u spraying to by the way??

the spray guy is taking about a properly done job. It depends on what sort of result your after.

The guy that did mine, (for the previous owner), only went down under the clear and pearl. Now in the sun you can see where the preparation was bodgy i.e. scratch marks in the filler/primer. Remember, if it looks half decent in just primer, it'll look like shit when its painted. It needs to be 100% effort in preparation to look 100% when its painted.

thanks dudez,

I'm spraying it in the Evo VI white. Not sure if its just the same as the normal lancer white. Not the pearl version though.

Well he gave me an alright price. All the work for $2k, but u kno, spent so much already so i told him i'll prepare it for him myself.

So....it'll look like shit if i sand it huh?

"No, just keep using finer garades of sand paper till you cant see or feel any defects."

Black32, When u said this, do u mean sanding it all the way till bare metal or doesn't reali matter if u have finer paper.

Also does anyone kno which type to use? I used the wet/dry type for a while but it didn't last long.

So i used this Yellow, ultra-fine 3M something like 255 or something. And it doens't die off at all. I think its meant to be for wood, but like, all the powder just falls off. Sand paper still like new. God or Bad?

going through the exact same thing right now, i actually have a few mates that do respraying, soo this is the info that i got!

to sand back the car etc, i used heavy duty scotch brites.... sounds funny but the benifit of using these over say 600 or 800 wet/dry is that it doesn't actually cut into the paint like sandpaper!! thus not having the trouble of it digging in any spots due to uneven pressure, plus gets into fiddly bits easier!!!

this is only going to be good if the currunt paint job is good-ish quality!!! just gotta take it down far enough to really dull --> hardly any reflection!!!!

I've gotta bit more wqork on mine fixing dents etc, plus a custom body kit i made myself!!! big job!

good luck with it!!! post or pm for more info.

true,

but theres that thing of getting exactly what you want, and the pleasure of seeing your own hard work in it!!!

or am i getting sentimental :(

i've spent 2.5 months working on it -- lost licence, sob!

so what better time to do it!

if your going to do it yourself-- slow and steady is the key!

Craved U lost u're licence? hehe same here, started on friday 3 months, so no big rush for me either.

Yea thanks for the info guyz, i kinda learnt thru trial and error.

I didn't use water, man the paper just died on me almost immediatly and scrathed, but luckily didn't do much yet so could be fixed with water now and fine paper later.

So what is this scoth brites thingie u'r talking about? And sand paper grades, is it higher the number the finer? Thats what i thought, when u said 600-800, i'm thinking this is realli fine paper, man...no hope at all. Took me a whole afternoon just tocut thru the clear coat and arm was dead. So going with coarse stuff + water then going for the wet/dry fine paper laterz.

Good idea or ?

Yea and choas, thats what i wanna do, just sand it down enough to cut thru paint. like till its all dull n shit, but alot of people are still telling me that sand it down to bare metal. fa^rk man.... i realli coudln't be f ucked....its alrite isn't it???? just sand it down to dull paint?

well all i can say is 95% of doin a good job is in the prep...the rest is spraying itself. i personally wouldnt do it myself cause i know how bloody hard it is to get perfect surfaces. u might think it looks all smooth and even when its all dulled out but even the slightest imperfection where u pressed just that bit too hard with ur finger will show up when sprayed. a friends mate decided to do the same thing and prep it himself....took it to his cuz/uncle to spray and they checked under the light to see if it was preped proper and laughed at him and told him to do it again....lol.

not saying u guys cant do it...im sure u can...just sayin that there is more involved than just cutting it back. AZN_ROMEO.....no offence but it sounds like u dont know wat ur doin as respraying a whole car is a big job and as REDLINE said it might end up costin u more in the end. might be good if u go and talk to the spray guy for tips and practice on something small first to get the gist of things.

as for goin with the coarse stuff under 600 i wouldnt recomend it as ull get hella scratches everywhere that would be hard to get out with the fine stuff. might save u some time at the start but will break ur balls in the end.:):D

i might sound like a perfectionist but i hate seeing nice cars with bodgy warped surfaces like mine...haha:D:D keep us posted as i want to respray mine in the future...good lucks

yea u'r right tho....i don't have any idea what i'm doing.

but slowly learning. This car has been pissin me off for too long man. seriuosli. so couldn't be fa^rked sometimes. The thing is, is that i'm not after a full show car look, just something that looks nice. Besides the spray painter is going to fix up anything i dind't complete...haha or f arked up...

if u ask me why i do it? coz it saves a shit load of cash. plus i kno couple if my freinds had their car resprayed....not the perfect bare metal prep. just rub down, clean, prim n spary over. and...the result is pretti good.

If anything fu cks up..like totally stuffed up uneven sanding. then out comes the paint stripper. lol. I've got three months times to do anyways (licence). so time not realli worried about and wounld'nt mind doing it, just that it;ll take 5 times as long maybe more.....

but thanks for the tips tho B1... and when u told me to ask the painter for tips....well thats why i started this thread..Lol.... for tips, ideas and methods but yea thanks anyways.

yea...got some advice today from painter.

gave some instructions but coming down in the week to double check.

Anyone had their cars resprayed? I'm thinking about engine bay too...since the engine is going to come out. Is there too much shit to remove and mask up for engine bay spray?

    • Even more fun, leave all the ADAS stuff plugged in, but in different locations, hopefully avoid any codes!   And honestly, all these new cars with their weird electronics. Pull all the electronics out Duncan, and just shove an aftermarket ECU and if needed a trans controller in, along with a PDM. Make it run basic but race car styled!
    • To follow up a question from earlier too since I had the front bar off again (fking!) This is what is between the bumper and the drivers side wheel And this is the navigator side, only one thing but its a biggy! So basically....no putting coolers in the wheel arches without a lot of moving other stuff. Assuming I move to properly race prepping this car I'll take that job on and see how the computers respond to removing a whole bunch of ADAS modules
    • So I prepped the car for another track day on Wednesday (will be interesting to see coolant temps post flushing out and the larger reservoir, with a forecast of 3-14 being 20o cooler than last time I took it out). Couple of things to mention; since I am just driving the car and not taking a support vehicle, I took the rear seats out and just loaded the back up Team Trackday style. Look at all that space! To cover off removing the rear seat....it is weird (note the hybrid is probably different because it wouldn't have folding rear seats) Basically, you remove the lower seat base, very similar to a r series but it is a clip that pulls forward to release the base rather than it being bolted down. Easy Then, you need to remove the side section of the rear seat on each side. There is a 14mm head nut at the bottom of the side piece, the it slides upwards off a hook at the top to release; you also need to unhook the seatbelt from the loop at the top. Then the centre piece is weird. You need to release/fold the seats forward with the tab in the boot on each side From there, there are 2,x12mm headed bolts holding the rear of each seat to the folding bracket, under the trim between the rear seat and the boot (4x christmas tree clips there, they suck). The seat is out but you can see where the bolts attach to the bracket
    • As discussed in the previous post, the bushes in the 110 needed replacing. I took this opportunity to replace the castor bushes, the front lower control arm, lower the car and get the alignment dialled in with new tyres. I took it down to Alignment Motorsports on the GC to get this work done and also get more out of the Shockworks as I felt like I wasn't getting the full use out of them.  To cut a very long story short, it ended up being the case the passenger side castor arm wouldn't accept the brand new bush as the sleeve had worn badly enough to the point you could push the new bush in by hand and completely through. Trying a pair of TRD bushes didn't fix the issue either (I had originally gone with Hardrace bushes). We needed to urgently source another castor arm, and thankfully this was sourced and the guys at the shop worked on my car until 7pm on a Saturday to get everything done. The car rides a lot nicer now with the suspension dialled in properly. Lowered the car a little as well to suit the lower profile front tyres, and just bring the car down generally. Eternally thankful for the guys down at the shop to get the car sorted, we both pulled big favours from our contacts to get it done on the Saturday.  Also plugged in the new Stedi foglights into the S15, and even from a quick test in the garage I'm keen to see how they look out on the road. I had some concerns about the length of the LED body and whether it'd fit in the foglight housing but it's fine.  I've got a small window coming up next month where I'll likely get a little paint work done on the 110 to remove the rear wing, add a boot wing and roof wing, get the side skirt fixed up and colour match the little panel on the tail lights so that I can install some badges that I've kept in storage. I'm also tempted to put in a new pair of headlights on the 110.  Until then, here's some more pictures from Easter this year.
    • I would put a fuel pressure gauge between the filter and the fuel rail, see if it's maintaining good fuel pressure at idle going up to the point when it stalls. Do you see any strange behavior in commanded fuel leading up to the point when it stalls? You might have to start going through the service manual and doing a long list of sensor tests if it's not the fuel system for whatever reason.
