How Many Litres Do I Need For Power Steering And Brakes? (r34)

hi ppl!

need to confirm how many litres of fluid i need for power steering and for my brakes for a R34 (turbo coupe)???

Going Castrol Transmax Z for steering, Motul RBF600 or whatever, for brakes. I know Motul can be obtained relatively cheaply from bike shops but what about the Castrol?

Autobarn told me $71 for 4 litres. I'm thinking i won't need 4 litres for power steering even after flushing it??

They also told me $34 for 500ml's for Motul!!

Castrol is more expensive and, um, well it is more expensive. About $30 for Motul brake fluid is right for 500ml. Sometimes you can get it for less. Get two bottles if you want to fully bleed your brakes. Or just one if like me you are lazy & only do the fronts.

Power steer fluid. Why flush it? Just get a half litre/litre bottle. Any old stuff is fine.

Don't like to skimp on the cars lubricants, especially not before a track day. Plus, the steering rack has been binding up quite quickly after some slaloming and i'm trying a quality hydraulic fluid as my first step of trying to fix it. I might need a cooler for it, but i'll see if i can fix it just with fluid at this stage.

So power steering doesn't need much either??

Yes a litre of brake fluid.

Power steering fluid is cheap as chips. NFI how much you need but a litre would be in the ball park.

If you steering is binding get it checked properly. Don't go to a track day with a potentially dodgy car it WILL end in tears.

the last day i was at, there was a little motorkhana section, and the instructor for that bit took my car out and he said it was normal for road cars to start doing that under these conditions, and it was probably just the steering fluid overheating. He didn't seem to think it was much and was some dual motorkhana champion or something...

and i don't know how you could check something like that without trying to replicate the problem with some "turning" intensive driving....

conclusion:

1 bottle of RBF600 was enough to flush a bit and fill brakes.

still have about 1.5litres left of Transmax. Apparently the power steering fluid was black as anything, just horrible, and took a bit to flush. So i wouldn't say 2.5litres would be normal, but i don't think mine had ever been changed.

as far as i could tell from my track day, the Transmax has fixed the binding issues...

You did the flush in only 1 bottle of RBF600?

I used 1.3 (or maybe 1.5) bottles, but we did flush it really thoroughly just to make sure the RBF600 didn't mix with the old brake fluid (as I didn't know what fluid was in there).

i used like 1.9 bottels just to make sure...hehe if brake fluids are of different colour it helps let u know.:P

Well this was the colour of my brake fluid the last time I changed it. So it shouldn't be too hard to tell the difference. :woot:

      Nah that is not actually a lot. Just painting my GTR frontend and the little bits to make sideskirts/nismo flare pieces work correctly/fit on the sedan/mount up correctly came to about $7000. Is it a lot? Sure. None of this is economical. Economy would be shelling the car and buying a 2010 Corolla to commute in. The perspective of all of this is different.

      I don't see any issues here. I've been saying all along this is a big job, the price reflects that.  When the car comes back perfect I'm sure it will feel like money well spent.

      So, I started this repair and got as far as "fixing" the holes with some fibreglass. God all those years working on boats came back quickly. I decided I'd reach out to some rust guys just to see what they would say about it. I came across a guy about 40 mins away and went to see him. He said the windscreen needs to come out, that there might be some more bits around the windscreen and he'd quote them at the time. But his quote was $300 to remove and replace windscreen and $3k for the damage he can see. He said he could respray the roof for $1200 and the bonnet for another $800 (somebody has previously rattle canned it, its horrendous). This is $5300 + any small additional bits. It's a lot, I get that and the name of one of my fave youtube channels 'Not Economically Viable' comes to mind.  I'm not being financially rational, but I've taken him up on the quote. He's opening a new shop in November with more room, so we're waiting for that. I'll leave the currently missing headliner out until then. I'm looking forward to it being fixed and having the paint looking nice again (lots of clear coat issues on the roof too). / flame suit on.
