I had a look at a series 2 R33 gtst this morning and took a few pics. The whole car seems to look pretty decent and it certainly performed well on the test-drive. There were a few odd noises like a metallic scraping sound from one of the rear wheels (worn brake I guess) and an even stranger 'gurgling/grinding' sound from the rear under idle (could not figure that one out), but other than that it seems ok.

One thing I did notice in the engine was an unplugged cable at the front-left (near the radiator). There was also an unplugged lead coming from the engine fusebox. I've circled them both in the first picture. Anyone know what these may be for? The 'green' plug was reconnected before the test drive so I don't know how or what it could have affected. I assume the other lead was for some sort of a/m device that was removed at some stage.

Any ideas about those plugs or are they not worth worrying about now?

one is the engine temp sensor it is located at the botom of the radiator there is another one in the top of the head where the radiator hose joins the block you can drive around with out the green one pluged in it makes no diffrence to performance the other one i cant see clearly enough could be anything.

the metallic scraping sound from one of the rear wheels

may be rust on the stock disks or worn brake pads they are noisy after you wash your car and you get surface rust on them

gurgling sound could be after market fuel pump they are louder some times

or stock one is fked

they are my guesses but i have only had my car for 8 years

best take it to a RACQ or NRMA for a master check just to be sure

any other ramifications of not having that green plug connected? Its not going to let the engine cook or anything is it?

And yeah, I've booked an RACV pre-purchase inspection but, cos of easter, there is a queue. Won't be getting checked til the 26th :P

i beleive the one on the drivers side is a grey one yes? just below the jumpstart thing?

that is a diagnostic port , its not meant to ber connected.

green plug- you will find the other end hanging behind the fan shroud area, and its not a big deal. it seems to be unplugged more than its plugged in. maybe they remove radiator for compliance or something.

i would look into the noises tho. brakes arent so bad, but whatever the other one is could be more expensive

I agree. I kinda sounded like it was coming from the back-left so at first I thought it was the exhaust making a racket. But the sound only really appeared during the test-run. I really don't remember hearing it before the run.

Which side is the fuel pump on?

Could be wheel bearings, easy fix.

To check, jack the car up and spin the wheel and also feel for any rock or movement by grabbing the wheel and pushing and pulling etc.............but it must be jacked up.

    • Oil change does not trigger code 21. Code 21 is for coilpacks primary side connection. You can try to clear the code with a battery disconnect, hold down the brake pedal to drain capacitors through the brake lights with the ignition on for 10-15 seconds before you reconnect the battery. I have seen R35 coil conversion permanently cause this code with no ill effects so it might be the resistance it wants to see isn't quite right on one or more coilpacks. Could be inside the ECU, could be the harness, could be a coil. You can test it all if you want or just ignore until the car actually starts misfiring.
    • I forgot you have a Nistune ECU. Use Nistune to do all the tests I mentioned instead of faffing with 30+ year old electrical connectors. You can read MAF volts off that too, there are reference values in the service manual to tell you roughly what it should be in different conditions.
    • No. I think it might be the AFM. Hence the use of the terms "swaptronics", which implies the use of swapping out electronics for the purpose of diagnosis. It's about the only way to prove that a small/niggling/whatever problem with an AFM or a CAS or similar is actually caused by that AFM/CAS/whatever. A known good item swapped in that still gives the same problem is likely to be caused somewhere else. They're all the same. Spraying AFMs with cleaner is an each way bet between cleaning it and f**king it.
    • Oh wow! This might actually work amazingly. Do you know the ratio of the diff? I was told the only thing you need to make sure of is if the front & rear diff ratios are the same. Ours is a 4.083 Thanks!
    • You think its the AFM? I know its a common issues on R32s. I find it coincidental how this issue raised right after cleaning the fuel system. As everything except the fuel system was fine before. I tried running it with the IACV unplugged but did not notice a difference and still stalled. However, the RPM gauge is not in the cluster right now, so I will need to connect the laptop again and use Nistune to check the RPM. I will check this weekend.
