hi all, im very new to this forum, i have tried to find an answer to my question but searching

but i couldnt find and threads in relation to it so im just gonna ask it again,

My R33 has recently started to surge, and want to cut out just as the turbo is spooling up,

and sometimes while i am just driving at the one speed, but is worse while accelerating..but only does it

when the engine is warmed up, never does it when it cold.

the best way to describe it is, it feels like its running outta fuel (yes there is fuel in there!)

could it be the igniter packs?

any help would be much appreciated,

great forum by the way!

cheers, craig

I have this problem after I fitted a electronic boost controller and turn the gain or boost level up. But when I turn the boost level or gain down the problem always goes away. Sometimes with diffrent fuels the problem would come back so I had to change boost / gain levels depending on the fuel. Fo you have a boost controller fitted?

if it sounds like its popping its probarly the coils

but if it making all the right sounds but going no where then takes off like a bat outta hell

it will be the normal r33 flat spot

most people change the ecu and have it tuned to fix the problem

but there are other ways around this problem it just depends who you speak to

Are you running standard boost? If yes then it's not the boost cut.

My advice:

Do a search on-

O2 Sensor/oxygen sensor. Yours might be dirty/dying

AFM. It might need a clean

Spark plugs. Change them

Coilpacks. Wrap them in tape/silicone

Fuel pump. Maybe yours is on the way out. Change the fuel filter too, it's a good idea anyway.

If the problem remains after all those then get professional help. Or a psychiatrist.

as far as i know, the turbo has been a flowed, but seems to now be running less than the standard 7 psi, i only have a manual boost controller under the bonnet, ill change as much as i can, coils, spark plugs leads etc, if it keeps happening, ill just have to take it to morpowa, or boostin oz to get them to figure it out...thanks guys

ok, i took the coil pack cover off, gave it a thrash to make the engine hot, it didnt do it, except for when i first started driving (when it was cold)

i got home , turned the lights off to check for a sparks fromk coils, and there was nothing.

i bought some new ngk laser platinum spark plugs that will be going in tomorrow.

could this problem possibly be my AFM?

ah ok.. 2 of my friend's r33 had the same problems too

put it on the dyno and check the fuel pressure, might be your fuel pump

may also be fuel pressure reg too, though not very likely. i'd check fuel pump first

coilpack and afm are other possibilities, but if afm's cleaned like i've mentioned in the other post it should be fine

if afm is playing up or dirty your car wont idle properly in most cases

ok, i spent some time under the bonnet yesterday, changed spark plugs (ngk laser platinum) cleaned afm thoroughly and checked/cleaned igniter packs, also wrapped them in electrical tape just in case,

all seems good, no more surging or choking, but this typical r33 flat spot you all spaeak of is now obviuose, doesnt do it all the time, but every now and then when i boost it hard. for now, it doesnt really bother me, it still eats most ls1's so thats all im worried about at the moment ; )

i also took out the bleeder valve beacause it wasnt always hitting the 11-12 pound it usually does, instead it was only reaching 5-7 pound.

it didnt seem to make much difference without the bleeder valve, but does it matter if i leave it out?

taking the bleed vavle out definatly wont hurt anything

the flat spot though i know how to fix it without changing the standard ecu

i have done it to my car and many others and has worked everytime

ok...how?

    • Thanks guys,  Yeah I should at least have them dynoed, at least then I know what I've got as a starting point.  The springs on these are hard as rocks. I vaguely remember Russman saying he was going to sell the shocks to me with the rocks fitted, as he was keeping the softer springs for his new setup.  I didn't click at the time but of course that was to let me know the shock/spring wouldn't be matched.  I also remember pricing up new springs around 2014-15, but, house, money etc. it never happened. So that was another reason to have them rebuilt. I have rebuilt the forks on many motorcycles so I think I could handle the seals on these easily enough, but getting the valving right would be a rabbit hole I cbf exploring.  Duncan, interesting to hear RP was tuning these back then. I might give them a call.  In the mean time I have been busy fitting sway bars. The Whiteline rear sway bar I purchased 15 years ago finally got fitted, along with the Whiteline front bar that showed up last week. Just waiting on new links for the front sway bar to finish that off.  And my spare set of advan AVS VS5's should be back from the powder coaters in a Pearl White finish sometime this week, with a set of Hankook RS4's lined up for fitting.  And then I just have all the suspension bushes to do. A comprehensive kit is on the way... Lots to do before the Ararat hill climb. Cheers guys 🍻
    • Nice car! I’m glad folks in the US have gotten past the FnF and are buying real cool cars like the 260RS I was with a bunch of mates in Portland about a year ago and spotted a green Stagea (just a regular 2.5T AWD) parked about 2 blocks away and they were like “a what?” So I made a bet with them for a round of beers and said “ok one of you run down there and tell me if the steering wheel is on the correct side” 5 mins later the American comes trudging back up the hill and goes “he’s right guys. Ok what beer do you want?”
    • Should replace OR drop the tank, give it's good clean. Might be worth replacing that entire fuel level/pump/cradle thing with this: https://frenchysperformancegarage.com/products/fpg-s13-180sx-r32gtst-single-pump-hanger-kit-billet-hat-6-v3-fpg-089?gQT=2
