Hi fellas, was looking at getting a DVD player but found out that in legal terms, the dvd player must be hooked up to your handbrake which means you cant watch movies while driving unless you bypass it which will then attract a yellow sticker or in the event of an accident, insurance may not compensate. Now, i know there are a few guys out there who has DVD, was wondering if you have bypass the handbrake thingy? And would you guys reckon that i should just go for a higher end mp3 player with amp and woofer or a dvd player? pretty tempted by the strathfield offer of the full mp3 system (headunit, full speakers, 2 amps, 1 woofer) but the installation cost is hefty... :) :S

Why do you want to watch dvd's when you're driving anyway? That rule is there for a reason. You could easily bypass it, but not the best idea. Rather just get a better mp3 player. Each to their own I guess, but if it was me, I'd rather go stereo stuff and install yourself, or if you have no idea, find a friend who does. Its not that difficult :)

I'd bypass it, but if you want to be safe, hook it up to a switch and hide it under the seat somewhere. It can be connected up to the handbrake when you need it, or just ground it when you want to watch DVDs when moving. As long as you wire it correctly and sneakerly, they would never know...

I'd go the DVD player, but thats what I want for my car. Depends on your budget really

Hey what exactly do you get and for how much?

I got all my gear from Strathfield and installed myself.

Go the DVD player, as it will probably read MP3s as well.

I recently put the iPod Alpine unit (non CD player, pure iPod) in my Skyline. Was good for a day, but sick of it now. I guess it happens when you're use to a $1800 deck and not a $600 Made in China Alpine cheapie hahahaha.

Alpine & Pioneer DVD screen units are dirt cheap nowadays..low $1000s I think from memory from JB catalouge.

I'm thinking why are they so cheap (DVD screens) and its probably because of Blu-Ray, and also the fact they're all made in China now which cuts costs big time in comparison to stuff made in Japan.

Install costs aren't hefty...in comparison to say visiting a performance workshop..Try doing it yourself if you can.

I've just earthed my wire... I never watch DVDs while driving.

I got it because it looks sexy, fills the double din gap, touchscreen, holds 6 dvds, etc.

Im thinking of a DVD because it nicer than a mp3 player too but wouldnt wanna get near to that yellow "card" from cops. And the dvd is to be use when waiting for my gf or when my gf is in the car with me? :) But of course that is not a must.

I have no knowledge on how to install though unless you are willing to help me out? I want to listen to songs and have bass. Thats pretty much what i need i guess. I saw the pioneer deck + 1 amp + 1 monoblock + speakers (which i dont think i will need as im good with the current stock ones). So i guess i will just need a mp3 headunit, 1 amp and 1 sub. I dont know whats a monoblock for anyway? ;) would like to have all installed for around 1.3k? or i can just get the headunit 1st because im sick of listening to radio!!!! :S and i still need to watch my spendings as i have a couple of more stuff coming in over the next few weeks and my 100k servicing..

Ill probably be going the Alpine IVA-W505 route when its released later in the year... either that or CarPC with a good touchscreen.

Who needs blu ray definition on a 7-9 inch screen lol?

I've wired up my 32R myself, headunit, speakers, amps(sub + 4 channel) and its no small feat, but if your cluey around 12v and can have the car of the road for a few days(easiest to completely strip car interior) then its definitely a DIY.

Hrmmm I can't find the reciept :domokun:

But it was around $2850 worth of gear, bought about a year ago..

Pioneer 6850DVD? deck (~$1280)

MTX 4500 Sub with box.

Pioneer Mono Amp for the sub

Pioneer 4way Amp for all 4 speakers

6.5" 3way speakers in the back

6.5" splits in the from (~$420, yellow cone ones)

...and then i spent maybe another $100 to get 1 more fuse, some better quality speaker cabling, and make up some speaker mounts and covers for the back, and a wood mount/bracket thing to hold the sub amp behind that little wall in the boot. So that amp is sittin above where the fuel pump lid is. The other amp is under the drivers seat.

Took like 10 hours to install it all!

Feel free to ask for a look/demo at a cruise.

If i have not mistaken, monoblock is a better amp for powering up ur woofer.. as in more powerful.. therefore ur other amp is for ur speakers instead of just running them all into 1 amp.. :P

Free stereo shit... Free to whoever wants to steal the car.

Dont worry, at least they don't know your plates! Oh, wait... :)

Dw, I'd do the same thing! I have the shittest deck you can have in my car, worse then stock!! And 2 6x9s (no front speakers!) that have cracked all the way around. Plus an amp that was around in the middle ages. If anyone wants them, they can have them! But dont damage/touch my car when you steal them

    • Can I suggest you try EBC directly again and link them to as many competitor catalogues as you can to show their listing is incorrect, eg https://dba.com.au/product/front-4000-series-hd-brake-rotor-dba42304/ If you have access to an R33 GTST VIN and your VIN, you could also use a Nissan Parts lookup like Amayama to show them the part number is different between 33 GTST and 34 GTT which may get their attention
    • So i got reply from EBC and they just this site where you can clearly see those 296mm fronts on R34 GTT. I send them photos and "quotes" that 296mm are not for 34 GTT and they are too small. But it will be very hard to return them cuz nobody here knows 100% and they just copy those EBC catalogue :-D https://ebcbrakesdirect.com/automotive/nissan/skyline-r34
    • Hi, is the HKS  Tower Bar still available ? negotiable ? 🤔
    • From there, it is really just test and assemble. Plug the adapter cables from the unit into the back of the screen, then the other side to the car harness. Don't forget all the other plugs too! Run the cables behind the unit and screw it back into place (4 screws) and you should now have 3 cables to run from the top screen to the android unit. I ran them along the DS of the other AV units in the gap between their backets and the console, and used some corrugated tubing on the sharp edges of the bracket so the wires were safe. Plug the centre console and lower screen in temporarily and turn the car to ACC, the AV should fire up as normal. Hold the back button for 3 sec and Android should appear on the top screen. You need to set the input to Aux for audio (more on that later). I put the unit under the AC duct in the centre console, with the wifi antenna on top of the AC duct near the shifter, the bluetooth antenna on the AC duct under the centre console The GPS unit on top of the DS to AC duct; they all seem to work OK there are are out of the way. Neat cable routing is a pain. For the drive recorder I mounted it near the rear view mirror and run the cable in the headlining, across the a pillar and then down the inside of the a pillar seal to the DS lower dash. From there it goes across and to one USB input for the unit. The second USB input is attached to the ECUtec OBD dongle and the 3rd goes to the USB bulkhead connected I added in the centre console. This is how the centre console looks "tidied" up Note I didn't install the provided speaker, didn't use the 2.5mm IPod in line or the piggyback loom for the Ipod or change any DIP switches; they seem to only be required if you need to use the Ipod input rather than the AUX input. That's it, install done, I'll follow up with a separate post on how the unit works, but in summary it retains all factory functions and inputs (so I still use my phone to the car for calls), reverse still works like factory etc.
    • Place the new daughterboard in the case and mount it using the 3 small black rivets provided, and reconnect the 3 factory ribbon cables to the new board Then, use the 3 piggyback cables from the daughterboard into the factory board on top (there are stand offs in the case to keep them apart. and remember to reconnect the antenna and rear cover fan wires. 1 screw to hold the motherboard in place. Before closing the case, make a hole in the sticker covering a hole in the case and run the cable for the android unit into the plug there. The video forgot this step, so did I, so will you probably. Then redo the 4 screws on back, 2 each top and bottom, 3 each side and put the 2 brackets back on.....all ready to go and not that tricky really.
