hey,

im about to put gt-ss turbo's and tomei poncams on my gtr and im deciding if i should by tomei exhaust manifolds

iv done some reading and apparntly they arnt really needed but what i want to know is do they change the sound of the car?

basically i want my car to sound tough

thanks

sorry but i have to laugh...

want it to sound tough?

Thats your reason for spending $1000 on an item thats not needed?

You might aswell spend $800 on a set of big cams too that aren't needed :)

Honestly, it'll probably change the note a tiny bit, but nothing major IMO as the actual design etc isnt much different from factory.

It'll give you a little more power (by being less restrictive than factory), and probably spool the turbos a lil quicker... but its your money man.

I personally wouldn't bother unless the engine is 'built'

I was considering a set of these for my R32 GTR when I build it with a 2.8 kit.

For the dollar value are these a worth while upgrade option? does the quicker spool time and extra power justify the expense?

Has anyone out there done an actual dyno comparision of tomei manifolds vs stock in terms of spool time and net power gains?

cheers

1. no

2. yes

latest HPI mag did an article on unnecesary upgrades. R32 GTR making 306rwkw, they put stock exhaust manifolds back on (was tomei i think), stock cams back in (tomei poncams), stock fuel pressure reg (cant remember)back on and i think there were a few other things too, all in all the car lost 1kw, yes one, just ONE killerwasp :domokun:

shure it lost one kw in the top end (peak power) but what did it loose in the low/midrange? torque? I dont care what the number on the dyno sheet says, its all about how the car drives and thats all about low/mid response and tourque. I would bet my left nut that it was a fair whack worse off in the mid range....

very random, and as for midrange power on the GTR, they were very close, almost a trace of eachother on the graph

just read it again, car as it was for the second run:

HKS GTSS turbos - as before

factory exhaust manifolds - were tomei items

factory cams - were tomei poncams

factory water pump - was an electric item

sard fuel pump and 700cc injectors - as before

doesnt seem right that the graphs are so close with a change of cams, but it sorta makes sense to me, it moves the power band higher where the torque is dropping off because everything else is designed to come in earlier, so it sorta balances out? thats how it works in my head anyway lol

and no, i cbf scanning it. next time u walk past a news agency just pick up a copy of HPI and go to page 56

well then if HPI says so...... I thought that was a catalogue magazine for people who want to buy neons for their car. Actually did they find adding neons increased power? I was hoping to buy some, oh and a tomei manifold and order some take away...something with rice in it. :)

HPI Serving suggestion - rice.

To answer this blokes question properly the GTR 'is' tough... even to a deaf man.

do you actually read hpi? find me one car, or one add for neons.

its a magazine, im not taking what they say as gospel, but its more believable then alot of other bullshit that gets posted on here...

It doenst make any sense.

Adding aftermarket parts doesnt mean it will give an instant hp gain.

It all depends on whether the car is tuned to the new parts installed.

    • So could it be assumed it has been installed intentionally with potentially a power FC boost controller kit?
    • Had my rig on Matt's dyno at PITS the other day. After a few years between tunes I added a few sensors and swapped intercoolers. Result. 553hp at 26psi. Not bad for an FJ20 that was built in 2007. The problem.. It filled the overflow bottle on hard runs which leads me to believe the head gasket isn't sealing. I have a coolant pressure sensor which was reading cap pressure at 22psi and occasionally overrunning to 23/24 psi on deceleration after a pull. It was not spiking. It has arp2000 head studs and a cometic gasket. As its been 18 years in service, I pulled the engine out and head off. Everything looks good but we obviously have an issue. Where I'm at.. Years ago I had the same issue, I checked the stud tension and they were all over the place. Some at 60 to 70 and some up near 90. I nipped them all to 100ft lbs and this stopped the water push until now. I believe this compromised the gasket back then. What do I do? 2 options are..  1) I bought arp 625+s, which I could put in with a new gasket. Thinking Kameari this time, reassemble and try again. 2) strip the block, get fire rings machined in with copper gasket and try that. I do not want to push it more than 28 to 30psi. I think the turbo will be out by then anyway. (G30-770). My other concern is the long term ability of a copper head gasket. Are they streetable for years? I feel like a new gasket with the new studs will probably suffice, but I don't know. Any thoughts welcome and advice on copper gaskets and fire rings. Thanks!
    • I'm a fan of the JZX110, and the Aristo. Big cruiser cars, and with the factory cars, super comfortable and feel like you're driving an armchair! And the JZ motors are a pretty nice engine too, especially with some basic mods.   The import process, and the need to be able to trust people, and the fact there's so many scammers around is what ever puts me off wanting to go through that ordeal!
    • I don't care for these at all, but at least the underside looks straight and not rusty. A good basis for a long life. Many cars from Japan have been lifted with forklifts and f**ked almost irrepairably.
    • Yes, but it's not dumb or dodgy. You can build a perfectly good boost controller from a pressure reg, a relief valve (looks same same as a reg if all from Norgren or SMC, for example) and a check valve. I ran one for years. Only superceded with  EBC because I could get one for cheaps and wanted finer control.   THis mod is certainly not a sketchy boost mod, provided the boost is kept below the "spin to death" threshold of the turbos.
