I see a fair few HR31's on japanese sites, and Nismoid's GTS-R, which have been converted to a 5x114.3 stud pattern, opening up the previously non existent wheel choice considerably.

I have an aussie 31, and I know how to convert the rear axle, but I was just wondering if anybody knows what hubs are used up front?

I have heard perhaps Z31 turbo 300zx hubs may be the go? But I don't want to buy a set and find out they don't fit! so does anyone have some info that could shed some light on this?

Also, on a related topic, I am looking at a BTR hydratrak diff conversion from a Falcon longreach ute, Is it possible to have axles shortened and retain the splines on the centre end? I mean not have to recut the splines? Apparently the BTR axles have a strange setup with an odd spline or 2 different one left to right or something. I'd like to fit the Hydratrak centre and axles into the R31 casing, and retain the 5x114.3 stud pattern and bigger brakes from the falcon. Its just an idea at this stage, but it seems like a better option than a worn out and recoed old silhouette LSD.

I wouldnt have a clue on the front hubs, but i know that 17's are hard 2 find 4 the r31, i have a set that i got from performance wheels, they are called 'Lotus', that was the only 17' wheel i could get. The diff sounds like a good idea 2, keep me posted if u get it done.

outlawskyline, thanks for the heads up, but I don't want or need 17s, 16x7/8" Is what I'm going for. Better ride and possibly better handling than the lower profiles, I mean thats already a +2 sizing on stock.

Though I'm partial to 18" R34 GT-R rims, but then, who isn't! I'd only use them on the street though, would be a step backwards for the track, I'd be tipping.

Where do I get them? are they legal? and what do you mean "run a silvia/180sx stud pattern", the stud pattern is identical on a stock skyline, 4x114.3. Or do they change your stud pattern to 5x114.3?

Slip, what about offset problems? Saliva/180sx are about +35 from memory, R31 is about +25. Do you know of anyone runing silvia/180 fitment rims on their 'line? do they sit inwards or fill out the guards properly?Would the wider rims (e.g 7/8") make up for the offset problem? I don't want to be losing track width. I want 16s for handling not looks. My current rims are 15x6" and thats not great for tyre choice, considering max width is about a 205 on those rims, and the sidewall height is annoying at a 65 profile.

use z31 turbo hubs up front and import 31 struts. then get ya rear axles redrilled to the same stud pattern and use ford rear brakes from memory thier the same offset as the 31 rears, just needa change the caliper mount.

i was gunna do this but ran outta money. :)

although when you add up all the additional costs unless you can get 18s for 200 bucks it's shitloads more expensive than just importing a set! but you get bigger brakes front and rear.

Std S13 wheels have SLIGHTLY less offset than std silo wheels. I say this because with the same set of 215/60 R15 tyres, they rubbed on the front struts when on the s13 wheels.

33 offset at the absolute minimum with 16's. Thats what I have, I want more. 38 would be better.

Slip, that would mean the S13 rims had a higher positive offset(which I was saying)- that is that the distance from the wheel centre to the hub face is closer to the front of the rim, hence they sit further inwards and rub the strut. Offset is measured from the centre line of the rim to the back of the hub face, not from the front edge of the rim to the hub face. A numerically lower offset number will sit the wheel further out, whereas a higher number will sit the rim in closer.

So you have +33 offset rims, what width? 16" ? what size tyres? What car are they off originally? how well do they fill the guards- I want to fill my wheelarches up, and get as much track width as is practical. My 15x6" rims with about a 30 offset just sit too close in at the back, like no worse than stock wheels, but yeah.

16x7 front, 16x8 rear. 33 offset. I would want them to sit at least 5mm further out, possibly 10mm (just from memory, and i would just roll the guards a bit to make em fit). They are satisfactory, but not perfect. I want 8's on the front as well, but theres not a whole lot of room in there. Can be done. Thats for later on.

205/55 R16 on the front 7"

225/50 R16 on the back 8"

Would almost got 215/225 or 215/235 as next set.

No idea what they are off.

The wheels themselves made a noticeable handling improvement. less body roll, more stable.

Cool! Yeah, Slip, if you want your wheels 10mm further out, you will need something with an offset more like +23mm as opposed to +33. lower offset means further out. Spacers would achieve what you want at the moment....but they are definitely dodgy.

I was thinking 16x7" or 16x8" wheels for my car. Everyone is obsessed with 17"/18" wheels on their R31's which is silly, they would be a step backwards. My local speedshop guy wants to sell me buddy club p1's , 16x8.5" , at $400 each though....Wheres my money tree :|

spacers are not ALL dodgy.

i have very non dodgy ones on my car, which are made by a guy who does v8 supercar wheels, and is fully engineered.

16x8 perfect i reckon. 235's or 225's all round.

I could cop 16x7, but they would have to sit out nice and wide.

Maybe if you got a good rappore with an importer you could tell them the specs you need and get them to source some 2nd handers in JP.

I have 17X7 +38 offset 4X114.3 wheels on my R30 skyline (which is same as r31 in offsets)

have no trouble, there is about 7-8mm clearance between strut and tyre at the front (205/40/17). and they actually sit in the guards a bit too much (nothing a 10mm spacer wont fix).

regarding wheel spacers, to a transport inspector they are a defect, but in an engineering point of view they are fine, i spoke with the guy that engineers major modified vehicles and he said they are fine if they are made right.

I had some laser cut to fit on one of my cars and had no trouble with them

on the topic of r31s have you considered an IRS rear end conversion?

    • Newbie here, proud owner of an Autech 260RS. I'm on the hunt for wiring diagrams specific to the 260RS, particularly S1. I've ran my eyes through R33, R34 Diagrams, there are some similarities, however continue to find incorrect wire colours and pins on connectors in the 33,34 diagrams.   I was hoping someone could point me in the right direction? I'd be happy to pay for the originals in Japanese. I can translate them, at least they would be accurate.   Any help please would be greatly appreciated, never heard an RB26DETT before let alone driven one, and I've got a spaghetti monster of goodness to sort out.   Cheers Benny  
    • Hey all  im wondering if you can help me please I have put a rb20 box in my r34 gtt as my auto packed up and a friend had a spare box I know it’s not ideal but it will get me up and running for now. we have done the conversation and everything is working great but my Speedo we got a s13 speed sensor but my Speedo reads double now and I bought a speed converter but still not having any luck.  so I thought I’ll reach out and pick your brains  any help would be appreciated please as I wanna drive my car again 
    • Drain it. I got official Matic D but you can get whatever is listed as Matic D compatible.
    • Thanks guys,  Yeah I should at least have them dynoed, at least then I know what I've got as a starting point.  The springs on these are hard as rocks. I vaguely remember Russman saying he was going to sell the shocks to me with the rocks fitted, as he was keeping the softer springs for his new setup.  I didn't click at the time but of course that was to let me know the shock/spring wouldn't be matched.  I also remember pricing up new springs around 2014-15, but, house, money etc. it never happened. So that was another reason to have them rebuilt. I have rebuilt the forks on many motorcycles so I think I could handle the seals on these easily enough, but getting the valving right would be a rabbit hole I cbf exploring.  Duncan, interesting to hear RP was tuning these back then. I might give them a call.  In the mean time I have been busy fitting sway bars. The Whiteline rear sway bar I purchased 15 years ago finally got fitted, along with the Whiteline front bar that showed up last week. Just waiting on new links for the front sway bar to finish that off.  And my spare set of advan AVS VS5's should be back from the powder coaters in a Pearl White finish sometime this week, with a set of Hankook RS4's lined up for fitting.  And then I just have all the suspension bushes to do. A comprehensive kit is on the way... Lots to do before the Ararat hill climb. Cheers guys 🍻
