“Original weight” is the original (unmodified) “tare weight” of the sedan version of the vehicle model fitted with the largest engine available for the model but without optional accessories such as air conditioning and tow bar.

No you can't, well not legally anyway :P.

I asked my local engineer about what it takes to become a signatory. The answer was something like B.ENG + qualified mechanic + time in the auto industry.

mayb i will look into getting all those qualifications.

imagine the $$ i could make from all of u guys who need your cars engineered.

Question : Should all Approvals be handed out during compliancing?? I haven't (bar caster rods) modified my 32 since it was brought into the country, but I don't know if I can be confident enough to say to a copper " all legal and engineered ".

Should I have an engineer check it over?

inasnt i was thinking the same thing as im currently doing a mech eng degree, who gives these engineers the power to issue mod permits.

We should start a company and just print off some forms similar to what other places produce with names and quailfiactions and show them to the cops. The mods were checked by a engineer and they thought they were ok, may fools some.

:bahaha:

So anybody got a copy of a eng cert they want let me borrow for research purposes only :D

46n2, believe it or not, I do believe that a turbo timer is illegal (in SA anyways) also you have braided brake lines, do they have rubber ends or all braid? Cos if its all braid, they too are illegal (need the rubber ends to pass ADR compliance testing). Lots of little things that 'may' not comply.

Bottom line is that a cop only has to think that a mod is illegal and the duty of proof of compliance with ADRs is yours ie, inspection time, but if you have certs, I really doubt they would be likely to insist on inspection as you would probably have good grounds to claim harrassment.

If it only costs a couple of hundred bucks, great, if its going to cost big dollars, that sucks.

so far I am thinking QLD is the go, little holiday up there, get the certs done and a nice cruise back. Not enough places to stop on the way to/from WA:D

Steve,

Go for a holiday, the engineers reports are good for Australia wide aren't they???

Get it done in WA/QLD and then move back to SA.  All done in a couple of weeks.

Sorry but that won't work. Certificates are only valid in the state they were issued and only for as long as the car is registered in that state.

I've just engineered my car for the third time. It was originally engineered in NSW in '94 then sold to a guy in QLD who had to re-engineer the whole thing. I then bought it a short while ago and had it engineered again just to make it current. It was interesting to go through the process and I did learn alot.

Someone in this thread said you shouldn't listen to everyones rantings and talk to your states governing body. Take that advice.

we could clean up big time, just go state to state and hand them out!!

Ok, engineering certs must not be the same as compliance certs.

compliance certs are australia wide. so is converting to lpg, and i think cab extensions (single to twin cab on 4wd's). so why not other certs.

Danny

I imaging even with an engineering certificate if a cop was in an arse of a mood he only has to suspect some thing is sus with the car and he can send it to get an inspection.

From the horses mouth... Thats their job to know whats what, not mine, If i suspect some thing is not right i'll send it for an inspection.

as joel said, it doesent matter if the cop doesent know shit, and 99% of them dont, they can make u get it checked out!

preety ***ed up world when stupid people without a clue have all the power. To become a cop u dont need to many brain cells that are active

On the other hand tho - a lack of brain cells can also result in illegal mods. I bet cops and auto engineers would have some pretty good stories about downright stupid and dangerous mods people have tried.

My theory is that if you don't put yourself in the position to be harrassed by the cops (ie dont act like a tosser on the roads and dont hang out with people acting like tossers) then your chances of being pulled over are minimal.

Also if you are civil to the cop and can demostrate that the mod is safe, legal and engineered (ie you have a copy of the certificate in the car) then you are in a lot better position to go free than someone who has a bad attitude.

I havent got to try this theory out yet tho 'cos i've never been pulled over.

    • Hang on. Let me get this straight. The desire is to have coilovers, BC in particular, to be MORE comfortable on Sydney roads than stock suspension? Well, that's obviously not right. BCs have crude damping design at the very best, and typically hard spring rates. BC stands for Billy Cart. And then, the desire is to put in some shitty old worn out stockers, to get it blue slipped and then put the BCs back in? And then.....what? Not worry about getting pulled up by the Plod? Because you seem to have raised a worry about paying for engineering (which actually does solve all your legality problems) and still getting pulled up.... but the only problem there is that if/when that happens you have to show your paperwork at the inspection station. Whereas, if you just swap in borrowed shitty old stockers to get it slipped now, and then you get defected in the future, you have to go find more shitty old stockers then too. You course of action looks like this set of options: Buy brand new stock type dampers, and springs. probably cost a bit more than $1k all up, but will last for the remaining life of the car. Put them in, pass inspection, drive on them forever more. Hell, they could even be really nice Bilsteins and Kings or other lower&stiffer springs if you wanted. Get the car engineered as is. ~$1k. Buy new Shockworks coilvers (or MCA) and also pay for engineering. You're spending a lot more here. But these will be the best things that you could drive around on.
    • Might be worthwhile hitting up Facebook's groups, I know most of them contain terrible people and scammers - however you might be able to find someone that's in Sydney with factory suspension you could purchase and/or hire. Just do not send any form of money anywhere, in person cash only.
    • Thanks @Duncan Ride height is fine. I think it's almost stock tbh. Happy to share a pic. I don't actually have a regular mechanic as haven't lived in Sydney too long. Could you or anyone recommend any shops in Sydney?
    • You just need a different blue slip shop (preferably one you regularly use as a mechanic), and make sure the coil overs are as close as possible to standard height
    • yeah the sugar refining companies were pushing for the same in Oz originally, all fuels were going to have 10% ethanol to make them "cheaper" (noting, that the loss in l/100 might be greater than the decrease in price). I guess they won that fight in Canadia
