Ruzic Engineering GTR 4WD Torque Split Controller

Designed and Optimised for Circuit Racing

The Nissan Skyline GTR has the ability to proportion drive torque to the front wheels at a continuously variable rate. The on board 4WD computer determines the torque split based on sensor inputs. The maximum torque to the front wheels can be up to 50%.

The 4WD Controller has been designed to alter the lateral G Force signal read by the 4WD computer. This in turn allows the device to alter the way the torque split is applied to the front wheels. It will apply the front wheel drive earlier, or later, depending on the setup.

The device has five different ‘maps’ (each with 32 individual set points for fine tuning) that can be used to alter the front torque split. These range from a simple line, to curves that allow the car to run as factory during low G Force curves, but apply more front torque for higher G Force curves.

By using an external toggle switch it makes it possible to setup two different handling strategies and transfer between them instantly. This feature allows the driver to optimize handling for different corner types at the race track. It is possible to have one setup for high speed corners and a different setup for off camber switchbacks.

With the device connected to the lateral G, longitudinal G and 4WD percentage signals, the user can perform handling analysis and determine how each map and scale factor setting is affecting the traction circle and grip of each turn at the track.

Data logging can be performed by using a memory option. The device will log to a laptop, or external memory. The data logging can log values at rates up to 20 samples per second.

"I have had the Ruzic Engineering 4WD Controller and Thermo Controller in my car for some time now and have not been able to fault them. My GT-R is my transport to work, where it sits in the sun all day and also shows up to the occasional Track Day. The Controllers are compact and robust enough to fit anywhere you want them to in the cabin. I have one mounted above the center gauges and the other in the center console. They are easy to read at night when I’m traveling home from work at 02:00 and don't distract you from the road.

The testing that I have done has mainly been at Track Days where I started using Map 1 with a zero scale factor. My car would be extremely susceptible to over steer on most corners. Switching then to Map 3 using the toggle switch, with 80 percent scale factor, I would be able to apply acceleration earlier out of the corner and not have any problems with over steer, just a nice 4wd power slide. Glancing quickly mid corner at the torque indicator, I do remember seeing the needle moving up around the 30 to 50 position at times. The indication lines are close together if you know what I mean. Hard to pinpoint accurately the amount of torque to the front wheels. I am waiting for a Data Logger Cable to arrive to plug into my PDA, so I can log everything it is reading.

Now my car set up is not the greatest for any Track at this stage by my standards, it is good on the road, but on a track, (different kettle of fish), so to make my tail happy car very close to neutral, and giving me better control on fast and slow corners, is fantastic.

I know many hours have been spent on this project, probably nearly adding up to two years R & D trying to make a product that is user friendly, extremely accurate, sturdy yet robust with an easy to read large backlit LCD display, and dam well perfect.

This 4WD Controller is fantastic and a blessing for anyone out there that is having problems with over/ under steering on a GT-R, GTS-4 and/ or anyone who just wants to fine tune there ride for road or track."

"Some of you may have read about Paul Ruzic building and (now selling) 4WD Controllers for GTR's. I purchased a unit from Paul and was "testing" it in the car on yesterdays Time Attack day at QR. I thought I would provide some feedback for anyone pondering a purchase.

May I first start by saying that I drive my car fairly hard on track days but by no means would I consider myself a fantastic driver. In honesty, I have trouble being able to really tell the difference between various sway bar and suspension settings, tyre pressures etc. I tend to check the tyres before I go out and then drive it like I stole it. My Kahunas aren't big enough to take corner one at the speed I think it should be taken at.

The 4WD Controller allows you to store and use (through a toggle switch) 2 separate "maps". These maps are variations on the way the car normally responds to the signals coming from the G sensor. Because you have so much variation, it is somewhat overwhelming as to what maps to use.

I started with an aggressive 4WD map (map 1) and a map which is slightly more aggressive than the way the car reacts as normal (map 2). I perhaps wasn't using the toggle switch as much as I should because once I had started driving the car with the system using map 1, I got so used to it, and liked it, so much that I didn't want to play with the toggle.

The car still switched between 2 wheel and 4 wheel mode, but it switches to 4WD so early and seamlessly that you don't even feel the transfer. Corners, both low and high speed, became (for me) much more controllable. I used to come onto the straight in 3rd gear feathering the throttle to maintain boost, basically steering with the back wheels. Now you can come onto the straight in a full 4 wheel power slide and you can "feel" exactly what the car is doing. As it turned out I shaved a second off my times for the Clubman and National Circuits. Admittedly I changed back to a tyre I preferred, but I am sure I can keep the times coming down.

As an overview, so far as the controller goes - I'm wrapped. I still have a fair bit of mucking around to do to really get to know it but the level of 4WD control is awesome. Whilst I can't drift my car, I can pull off some awesome power slides at the moment. If you are looking at a 4WD Controller for your car, DEFINITELY consider the Ruzic Engineering unit. You are more than welcome to check out the quality of the unit in my car."

"Just a quick run down of my experience with the Torque Split Controller. I own a R32 GTR that is quite standard it only has an Apexi Power FC, adjustable camber and castor arms and a cat back and of course the TSC (Torque Split Controller). I took my car down to Wakefield for the Australia day track day with the auto sports guys and had a great time. I only just got my car ready for the day because i had a minor front ender in it a week before Christmas and it took a while to get all the parts sorted, but we got there even with a left hand front shock that by half day had leaked all its oil out and really had a lot of trouble keeping the wheel on the ground. The shocks and springs all look original so they have done ok being 17 years old, they will be changed very soon.

OK so to the TSC because that’s what you will be here to read about. First session out I took it easy after getting the Power FC tuned and a totally different wheel alignment done a couple of days earlier. But i found that the car really wanted to slide out of corners. The rear diff is also getting quite worn which was letting the inside rear wheel spin which really didn’t help with getting the power down. About halfway through the first session (4 to 5 laps) I didn’t like how it felt and wasn’t getting the power down all that well so i changed the TSC from standard (map 1 no gain) to map 2 and 10% gain and the difference was huge! Being able the get on the gas earlier and a lot harder it really changed to feel of the car. It felt and was a lot faster through the tighter corners where before I really had to pedal it, now I could just accelerate out of the corner. Through changing the drive to the front it held a tighter line by feeding the power to the front earlier and also helped with mid corner turn in.

I left it at this setting and thought that I needed to learn the track and get my lines a bit sorted. Later on in the day I started playing with the gain looking for the best exit out of the last corner onto the straight. I didn’t get a chance to play with the other maps but found that just on map 2 I was able to tune everything from power on under steer due to the front wheels breaking traction to nice smooth neutral over steer just by adjusting the gain. The biggest thing I found was that it made the car a lot easier to drive faster on the track. I’ll be heading to eastern creek in a couple of months with coil-overs and am really looking forward to seeing what it can do around corner 1.

This is yet another testimonial to the great gadget that is Paul’s GTR torque controller. I have had mine in my car for about 4 months, and I can honestly say that it has been the biggest handling upgrade I could have made. It is particularly useful in setting up the car for the conditions on the day, with a recent wet track day demonstrating it nicely. I was able to dial up sufficient RWD to get some oversteer into the corner, then at the apex when the g-forces really started kicking in there was enough FWD to pull the nose out of the corner and set it up nicely for the next one. Result? Controlled 4 wheel drift with the nose pointing the right way. And this was by no means working at the limit of the controller.

Its nice to be able to see the amount of drive going to the wheels in a real time digital display, as it means that you can dial the drive FW or RW to change the angle you reach at apex, and get the neatest and therefore fastest corner your car can handle.

I tend to be a minimalist in my cars interior, and although I know lots of people like to mount their controlled above the central air vents, I have mounted mine just left of the wheel on top of the digital clock. Sits there nicely, easily accessible for me and I don’t have to shift my eyes too much to see what its doing. All in all, if you haven’t already improved your GTR with one of these, you should. For what it is worth I mounted mine in the boot. Hung it off the ATTESSA computer.

Reasons being three fold:

1. It is out the way so no one sees it/fiddles with it.

2. The wires you need to splice in are all available from the ATTESSA unit itself making the installation easy.

3. No need to hack about the interior or remove the instrument panel.

    • I did end up getting it sorted, as GTSBoy said, there was a corroded connection and wire that needed to be replaced. I ended up taking out the light assembly, giving everything a good clean and re-soldered the old joints, and it came out good.

Thanks for pointing out. @soviet_merlin in the meantime, I received a reply from nengun, and i quote: "Thanks for your message and interest in Nengun. KG4900 is for the full set of floor mats, while KG4911 is only the Driver's Floor Mat. FR, RH means Front Right Hand Side. All the Full Set options are now discontinued. However, the Driver's Floor Mat options are still available according to the latest information available to us. We do not know what the differences would be, but if you only want the one mat, we can certainly see what we can find out for you". Interesting. It seems they still have some "new old stock" that Duncan mentioned 🤔. I wonder if they can provide any photos......And i also just realized that amayama have G4900 sets. I'm tempted too.

    • So this being my first contribution to the SAU forums, I'd like to present and show how I had to solve probably one of the most annoying fixes on any car I've owned: replacing a speedometer (or "speedo") sensor on my newly acquired Series 1 Stagea 260RS Autech Version. I'm simply documenting how I went about to fix this issue, and as I understand it is relatively rare to happen to this generation of cars, it is a gigantic PITA so I hope this helps serve as reference to anyone else who may encounter this issue. NOTE: Although I say this is meant for the 260RS, because the gearbox/drivetrain is shared with the R33 GTR with the 5-speed manual, the application should be exactly the same. Background So after driving my new-to-me Stagea for about 1500km, one night while driving home the speedometer and odometer suddenly stopped working. No clunking noise, no indication something was broken, the speedometer would just stop reading anything and the odometer stopped going up. This is a huge worry for me, because my car is relatively low mileage (only 45k km when purchased) so although I plan to own the car for a long time, a mismatched odometer reading would be hugely detrimental to resale should the day come to sell the car. Thankfully this only occurred a mile or two from home so it wasn't extremely significant. Also, the OCD part of me would be extremely irked if the numbers that showed on my dash doesn't match the actual ageing of the car. Diagnosing I had been in communication with the well renown GTR shop in the USA, U.P.garage up near University Point in Washington state. After some back and forth they said it could be one of two things: 1) The speedometer sensor that goes into the transfer case is broken 2) The actual cluster has a component that went kaput. They said this is common in older Nissan gauge clusters and that would indicate a rebuild is necessary. As I tried to figure out if it was problem #1, I resolved problem #2 by sending my cluster over to Relentless Motorsports in Dallas, TX, whom is local to me and does cluster and ECU rebuilds. He is a one man operation who meticulously replaces every chip, resistor, capacitor, and electronic component on the PCB's on a wide variety of classic and modern cars. His specialty is Lexus and Toyota, but he came highly recommended by Erik of U.P.garage since he does the rebuilds for them on GTR clusters.  For those that don't know, on R32 and R33 GTR gearboxes, the speedometer sensor is mounted in the transfer case and is purely an analog mini "generator" (opposite of an alternator essentially). Based on the speed the sensor spins it generates an AC sine wave voltage up to 5V, and sends that via two wires up to the cluster which then interprets it via the speedometer dial. The signal does NOT go to the ECU first, the wiring goes to the cluster first then the ECU after (or so I'm told).  Problems/Roadblocks I first removed the part from the car on the underside of the transfer case (drain your transfer case fluid/ATF first, guess who found out that the hard way?), and noted the transfer case fluid was EXTREMELY black, most likely never changed on my car. When attempting to turn the gears it felt extremely gritty, as if something was binding the shaft from rotating properly. I got absolutely no voltage reading out of the sensor no matter how fast I turned the shaft. After having to reflow the solder on my AFM sensors based on another SAU guide here, I attempted to disassemble the silicone seal on the back of the sensor to see what happened inside the sensor; turns out, it basically disintegrated itself. Wonderful. Not only had the electrical components destroyed themselves, the magnetic portion on what I thought was on the shaft also chipped and was broken. Solution So solution: find a spare part right? Wrong. Nissan has long discontinued the proper sensor part number 32702-21U19, and it is no longer obtainable either through Nissan NSA or Nissan Japan. I was SOL without proper speed or mileage readings unless I figured out a way to replace this sensor. After tons of Googling and searching on SAU, I found that there IS however a sensor that looks almost exactly like the R33/260RS one: a sensor meant for the R33/R34 GTT and GTS-T with the 5 speed manual. The part number was 25010-21U00, and the body, plug, and shaft all looked exactly the same. The gear was different at the end, but knowing the sensor's gear is held on with a circlip, I figured I could just order the part and swap the gears. Cue me ordering a new part from JustJap down in Kirrawee, NSW, then waiting almost 3 weeks for shipping and customs clearing. The part finally arrives and what did I find? The freaking shaft lengths don't match. $&%* I discussed with Erik how to proceed, and figuring that I basically destroyed the sensor trying to get the shaft out of the damaged sensor from my car. we deemed it too dangerous to try and attempt to swap shafts to the correct length. I had to find a local CNC machinist to help me cut and notch down the shaft. After tons of frantic calling on a Friday afternoon, I managed to get hold of someone and he said he'd be able to do it over half a week. I sent him photos and had him take measurements to match not only the correct length and notch fitment, but also a groove to machine out to hold the retentive circlip. And the end result? *chef's kiss* Perfect. Since I didn't have pliers with me when I picked up the items, I tested the old gear and circlip on. Perfect fit. After that it was simply swapping out the plug bracket to the new sensor, mount it on the transfer case, refill with ATF/Nissan Matic Fluid D, then test out function. Thankfully with the rebuilt cluster and the new sensor, both the speedometer and odometer and now working properly!   And there you have it. About 5-6 weeks of headaches wrapped up in a 15 minute photo essay. As I was told it is rare for sensors of this generation to die so dramatically, but you never know what could go wrong with a 25+ year old car. I HOPE that no one else has to go through this problem like I did, so with my take on a solution I hope it helps others who may encounter this issue in the future. For the TL;DR: 1) Sensor breaks. 2) Find a replacement GTT/GTS-T sensor. 3) Find a CNC machinist to have you cut it down to proper specs. 4) Reinstall then pray to the JDM gods.   Hope this guide/story helps anyone else encountering this problem!
