would rear strut brace or rear sway bar be a better first mod?

i have an RS Four S which i think has slightly a larger rear sway bar than others?

If its not 24mm solid getting one will be good.

Strut braces and sway bars do entirely different things to one another.

A strut brace gives torsional rigidity to the front or rear of the car, ie., it reduces rotational flex in the body as it resists the suspension pressure. This in turn allows the suspension to work better because the shocks, springs and sway bar have a stiffer platform from which to do their work. Personally, I would certainly start with a strut brace before going to a heavier sway bar because it will allow the bar you have to work more effectively.

Fitting a heavier sway bar at the front tends to make the suspension at the back of the car lift an inside wheel and vice versa (just look at some of the 3 wheeling attitudes of touring cars in the past - Minis would cock a rear wheel like a dog peeing while Cortinas used to lift a front). Sway bars reduce body roll (how about that?) but there are practical limits to their effectiveness if they are just too stiff for the suspension setup as a whole.

Its HOLIDAY TIME!!!

Which means your all you lucky fellas with stageas its time to bring back some handling to your ride.

Ill update this tonight with all the details and send out PM's with my bank details.

Any questions ask in here and Ill get back to you as soon as I can, Please dont ask via PM's (unless its about your personal details, eg postal address) as it takes hours of waiting around to get back to you due to the Pm system.

Any questions ask away.

Greddy no longer make the strut braces, Which only leaves Cusco. If you are interested your welcome to contact me and if 5 people are keen then happy to do it.

Seems most people lost interest at some stage along the road.

I think a rear strut brace on a Stag would definitely be worthwhile and was planning on designing and fabricating one myself if yours weren't available. I'm definitely still interested (subject to the final price, of course). I can send you further contact details in a PM if you want.

Mate, I am still chasing a rear strut brace for my Series 2 RS Four S. Let me know a price etc.

My mate has a tendency to fabricate things (has a machine shop)

I'm doing some work for him and he owes me a favour

i might have to measure things up and make some drawings and work out what price he could make them for and let you all know

My mare doesn't have much on next week so we are going to see shay kind of materials are available and make something up

The mounting bracket (that goes under the strut bolts) may be a bit rustic cos he doesn't have a flow jet out cnc cutter, just manual tools. Should still come up well tho. Will post up pics when we're done and if everyone is happy with the product we'll take some deposits and make some up

We're going to make it easy to remove yet as stiff a possible

I for one will be keen to see what you can come up with and what it might cost to make. I gather the proprietary brand version (Cusco?) hasn't eventuated...

Please keep me posted, if the rear strut braces are going to be ready before the end of the year. I'll grab one once they are ready.

I am happy to test out an prototype if required :D

    • They are under bucket shims. Tomei provides a test shim kit and then any measurement of shim required.
    • I always wondered how you were supposed to buy a set of 24 buckets and somehow magically have every single one of them yield exactly the desired clearance. I would have thought you'd need to assemble a cam with either 12 "sample" or "example" buckets of known top thickness (or a single such sample/example 12 times over!!) measure clearances at every valve, and then do the usual math to work out what the actual "shimness" of each bucket needed to be, before buying the required buckets to make up he thicknesses that you didn't have on hand.
    • I now seem to be limited in power due to my rev limit/hydraulic lifters in my built RB25. I'm looking into converting over to Tomei solid lifters. Question for anyone that has done the conversion. I was always under the impression that when using the Tomei solid lifter conversion, you would also require new valves (Longer or shorter stems, I can't remember which).  I don't know where I got this idea, as so far I see no mention of this in any of the Tomei documentation. It just states I need the Tomei solid buckets, solid lifter cams and upgraded springs. As my head is already built, all I would need is another set of 1000$ Kelford cams, 500$ buckets and about 4H hours of my time installing and I'm off to the races!?!? There's no way it's that simple, I must be missing something?
